You need to use one the bokeh from f/1.8 is pretty horrible. May not be an issue though depending on how the lens is used.
Bokeh is subject and background dependant and IMO even when the swirly cats eye effect is at its worst it can sometimes work to make a picture more appealing, to some.
I must admit that when I first got the f1.8 I kept thinking how much nicer the bokeh was from the Sigma f1.4 I had which was a much more neutral lens but the Sony f1.8 has slowly grown on me and at least no one can say it's a sterile characterless lens, it has that going for it
