The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

You need to use one the bokeh from f/1.8 is pretty horrible. May not be an issue though depending on how the lens is used.

Bokeh is subject and background dependant and IMO even when the swirly cats eye effect is at its worst it can sometimes work to make a picture more appealing, to some.

I must admit that when I first got the f1.8 I kept thinking how much nicer the bokeh was from the Sigma f1.4 I had which was a much more neutral lens but the Sony f1.8 has slowly grown on me and at least no one can say it's a sterile characterless lens, it has that going for it :D In some respects it's more like the film era 85's I have.

You need double all that ... for a wedding?

It’s hard to explain...in short I don’t have, or didn’t have enough flashes for Sony.

So for the last few weddings I literally shoot all Sony for the day and then switched to Canon for the evening. So yes, double that.

I plan to switch over properly but can’t until I get a couple more flashes and a Sony macro.

Fair enough, I would have thought simpler is best when you have a long day to cart stuff about though

Nope, they said it would be April.

No big difference anyway not like the A9 update it’s just the updated eye a.f.
Just thinking.... Wasn't there talk about an intervalometer being included in the A73 update as well?

Couple from my walk around Ullswater lake, long walk but some stunning views and the weather was amazing. Still shows that the A7R is a stunning landscape camera, perfect for subjects that don't move.

The case is for transport, on the day I don’t carry that. There are a few photos in mind at the hotel which I will use some of the gear like the 20mm for the wide room shot and the macro for the ring but once that’s done, it’s staying behind. I’m staying at the same hotel as the B&G so I can literally cart the case to the room for the morning, move it back to my room and take what I need in my bag and go.

Always best to be safe than sorry when doing paid jobs [emoji1303]

I wouldn’t travel in anything else on a flight than a pelican either...these things are sooooo solid.

Although security literally emptied it and swap everything and I had to repack it again.

Seems to depend on what a-hole security you get at the time, last time I flew with a camera bag containing 3 lenses, body flash and whatever extras, they didn't even open it. Went through the scanner - they could clearly see what the contents were, and handed right back to me pretty much.

She was nice tbh, just took a while as she took out every item.

So I've switched gradually from Canon to Sony, and haven't been entirely wowed so far (probably because I'm a bit spoilt - coming from a 7d2, 5d3 and 1ds3).
Currently have the A7iii and 16-35 / 70-200 / 100 / now the Batis 85mm. Likely going for the Tamron 28-75 as the Sony 24-70G is a bit heavy! Switching from Canon to make my kit a bit more travel-friendly, took the 7d2 / 6d / 150-600 / 70-200L IS mk2 / 24-70L mk2 on safari and trekking and that was a bit much...

The AF will take some getting used to, it's quick and tracks around but definitely not in the same way as the Canon. That, and coming from an A7ii I've only just figured out how to do eye AF and this is after an evening of taking photos being frustrated that eye AF isn't working! Most likely teething issues.

How are you doing eye af.

I found it best having c-af on keep hold of centre wheel button while taking images.

This will improve in next update

That's how I've just set it up, I thought the greyed out area in the menus was me doing something daft, and it turns out that was correct!

So it will work better now for you

The rumor site reports that the fe native Voigtlander 50mm f1.2 will start shipping soon...

https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/voi...unt-lens-will-start-shipping-out-on-april-19/

After a quick Google I couldn't see any reviews but no doubt they'll start trickling through soon enough and if this lens is as good or better than the IMO excellent 40mm f1.2 it'll be a very nice lens :D

I have the 35mm f1.4 and 40mm f1.2 and they're different lenses. I'd expect this 50mm to be more like the 40mm and not "classic" like the 35mm. I doubt I'll get the 50mm... but if it's as nice as I expect it to be it'll be a tempting lens :D

PS.
The price of film era 50mm f1.2's seems to have risen since I got my Minolta Rokkor, the Nikon ai-s is available new for under £400 which is tempting but it'll need an adapter and there's no exif or auto magnification like you get with the fe mount Voigtlanders. Any of these lenses should last decades :D

50 f1.8 FE now £145 on Amazon spring sale.

Never used a 50mm as bad in my life. Including old ass nikkors etc

If you'd said "it's not sharp until f8 and bokeh looks busier than paddington station" then I might have understood a bit better.

its sharpest nifty fifty of the lot but it does cost more than others too.
The AF on the other hand is questionable. The initial reviews were rather negative about the AF which apparently got better with the fw update for the lens.
Yet this lens can keep up and shoot at 20fps while the better focussing lenses such as FE55 can only shoot at 15fps.

I don't really know what the deal with this lens is (its kinda confusing), some people who use seem to like it. Since amazon has a brilliant return policy I suggest trying it out for yourself and decide whether you like it.

It's a quarter the price of the Zeiss 55 so you'd expect it not to be as good. I did a quick comparison of them in my local John Lewis a few days ago and they weren't that far apart - certainly not enough to warrant spending the extra on the 55 (in my humble opinion).

I got the 55mm f1.8 as the 50mm wasn't out at the time.

I haven't tried the 50mm but I'd definitely buy from somewhere that accepts returns without fuss due to worries about the focusing. I bought a 50mm f2.8 macro some time ago and there were comments about hunting and slow focus in some reviews but on my original A7 it was so inconsistent and hit and miss it was next to useless. I don't know if later A7x's are better with these cheaper Sony lenses but I'm nervous of buying them now because of the way that macro performed.

Other than the focusing. That 55mm is IMO a very good lens and seems to get consistently good reviews but in all honesty other than at the very widest apertures and when pixel peeping who's going to be able to consistently tell shots taken with it or the cheapo 50mm apart?

Well, I'll let you know as I just pulled the trigger on that Amazon deal :) Sure, I'd prefer the 55 but happy to take a chance on the cheapie 50.

45 TSE for the canon cap and 50 zeiss for the Nikon. I just lost the Sony cap and have a Nikon cap spare.

a 20mm/1.4 and 100 macro hidden from view.

Hi Raymond, out of curiosity what sort of pics are you using the TS-E for?
