The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Just buy something!!! Whether it’s the Z6 Z7 A9 85mm 90mm macro... just cure that GAS

I'm waiting for my latest new toy to arrive. I've been scanning evil bay and the various used kit dealers for a while and finally just the right thing popped up so I bought it :D and for under £50 too :D A similar one went for under £20 but lovely though that one was it wasn't quite the one I wanted, so I ignored it and paid the extra for exactly the one I wanted.

For people who have had both A7iii and A7Rii, is there a real difference in terms of performance? Sensor output and IQ both seem great, but what about autofocus (fast toddler).
Used to own A7RII which I upgraded to A7RIII for the update in AF. I also have a toddler and it made a noticeable difference.
A7III is slightly better that A7RIII in both AF and IQ department because it's the latest FF sensor. But I don't think the difference is large enough to be noticeable in real life.

Just for IQ A7RII holds its own against most recent bodies even the Nikons and Panasonic FF mirrorless. It's all about the AF ;)

Pretty easy shot without af at all really, lovely animal haven't seen one in years.

Whoops, stupid phone - shot! Was wondering why it got censored :D

What sort of stuff do you shoot these days?
Cats lol! I do actually use them as subjects when trying out a lens, I take portraits of the kids too but they only get posted to fb. Everything tbh, enjoy macro the most ATM, where I'm manual focusing, but everything and anything, whatever takes my fancy. Most of what I shoot now besides birds or bugs would be still life where AF barely matters

Indeed, wasn't a serious comment ;)

But I got rather excited since it's the first time I have shot a urban fox. They are all too common in my area. I see one every other day.

Animal eyeAF would be great if it actually works for birds in flight. Somehow I don't think it'll be that advanced

Now that would be something, I can see wildlife photographers go nuts for that. But it's never even been hinted at so I'd guess it's technically very difficult to implement. The first to crack it though might well take that market.

The wildest thing I've had in the garden was a hedgehog, and I didn't even know it at the time. I was fetching something from the shed and on the way back there was something black, about the size of a small football, across from the bins. I shoved it with my foot and it kind of rolled over making a sound like a plastic bag. I just thought that's what it was, someone had wrapped something up in a bag and chucked out for me to put across to the bin. When I came back out with a light about 10 minutes later it was gone! The only thing I can think of it being was a very large hedgehog, who rolled up when I was passing, when I shoved it the sound was it's bristles. If I'd known or checked earlier in d have got some cool shots of it.

I haven't see hedgehogs in our area. We also get a green woodpecker in the garden every so often. But its easily scared, so hard to get close to it :(

When we first moved into the house and while cleaning the back garden I saw a frog
It seems I am as scared of frogs as I am of slugs and snails lol. I can deal with foxes, other mammals, birds and even snakes. But not slugs and snails :D

We get frogs. I haven't seen a hedgehog for years but recently we had a squirrel for the first time and in the past we've had a pheasant and some sort of kestrel thingy. Next door have caught foxes on their cctv but I've never seen them apart from on the industrial estate 15 minutes walk away. Walk 20 minutes in the other direction and I've seen deer on the hills.

Years ago when I was a boy me and some other kids saw a huge rodent of some sort just 10 minutes walk from where we now live. I'll never know what it was but it was massive, the size of a beaver or something like that.

Don't get woodpeckers here either :/ I'm not wary of any animals really but I see a rat and I'm gone!

"Better" bokeh
More bragging rights
Probably better sealed/built

um....

I've seen people say the bokeh isn't amazing from the 1.8, but from what I've seen it's perfectly fine, I'm not fussed about 'perfect bokeh balls' - it certainly looks to be plenty sharp enough. Weather sealing is a nice comfort, but I've shot with plastic kit lenses in downpours and they were just fine. It's the cameras that need it more, had an old D90 get wrecked after shooting in heavy showers for a few hours, but never had a lens fail because of it.

Much better bokeh, you probably meant to say.

The G.M has less C.A. by a fair bit. That was the main reason I jumped to the G.M from the f/1.8.

Better micro contrast, more character.

The 85mm f/1.8 also isn’t much good at f/1.4.

The simple truth is as always when you compare a good quality lens with an exceptional lens like the G.M’s is that if they where the same price 95% of people would buy the G.M.

The f/1.8 is lighter and has faster a.f, pretty good lens for the money.

You need to use one the bokeh from f/1.8 is pretty horrible. May not be an issue though depending on how the lens is used.

Maybe I'll own a GM one day, but at the moment the 1.8 is serving me just fine.

And it will, I am kind of sorry I let mine go tbh, would have been handy for when I didn’t want to lump around the G.M. Hard to justify having both though, especially when I have the 90mm Macro that can double up as a decent portrait lens as well.

It would have to do the job for me if I ever switched to Sony, could never justify the spends on a GM - not unless I was getting paid for my images. I kinda like quirky bokeh though, it can look a bit forced or faked when it's too perfect

I though the 90mm macro to be avoid for portraits

Why it’s very sharp and bokeh is not too bad at all.

Tbh it what I was hoping to use it for macro as
Well as portraits but pretty sure someone in here or somewhere said avoid for portraits

I read that too. But I know quite a number of people use it for portraits too. I can't see any reason why you couldn't. Seems like a great lens overall.

It will be slower to focus than an 85mm say for portraits although it's very fast for a macro lens.

Won't do a bad job though, it's an excellent lens.

You can use just about any lens for portraits, I would avoid the obvious wide angle lenses, but otherwise the only reason I can think of is that the lens is TOO sharp! This can be the case with any macro lens, they are optimized for close up sharpness. This is sometimes not very flattering for a female model for example, as it'll really bring out the pores on the skin in close up portraits.

And how does it compare? My d750 is quick, misses at times with the sigma art lenses, but usually because I am at F1.4.

I was really replying to someone about b*st*rdy snarkiness.

I've just come from a D610 - A7III focus is silent, instant and most of the time absolutely spot on at f1.4. That's a bit different to the D610 which really struggled in lower light.

Dec is a big boy, I'm sure he knew I was joking especially as I like pretty much everything he posts including that image.

What have you done now twist.

All packed for wedding in NYC !!!

There are 2 flashes and 7 lenses under that.

When you sort out your garden, do you use 5 lawnmowers?

That’s nuts!

Way too much crap to be carrying around especially just for a wedding.

This is half my usual stuff :p

And I have a plan, I don’t take it all on the move.
