Was not to buy. Was just looking at prices at Panamoz and it’s £175 more with kit lens.
 
As I've said before, I'm pretty sure Sony would have had a good idea what Nikon was doing so I'd be surprised if they haven't got a response in the pipeline.

Before the Nikon announcement I'd have said that for me Sony need a 35mm f1.8/2 but after looking at the Nikon pictures (of the camera) I think that Sony could make their cameras prettier :D

Actually, there are a couple of things I'd like on my A7 - after using face detect and being quite impressed eye detect might be nice too and it'd be lovely to be able to link spot metering to the focus point.

A question - on the later bodies I think it's possible to link spot metering to the focus point? yes? but is it also possible to have the metering linked to the focus point when using eye and face detect?

I agree, just like big firmware updates like what Fuji roll-out.
@woof woof I agree, you should buy the Sony A7 III, its a smashing camera and leaps ahead of the original Sony A7.
You've got your monies worth out of the A7, time to upgrade and experience the incredible Eye-AF. Trust me, you won't regret it.

I'm just weighing it all up. For what I take pictures of the A7 is just fine IQ wise but moving away from manual lenses for a couple of days and messing about with face detect was nice and there's the pleasure of it all too and having an A7III might be nice :D

I did have a couple of problems with face detect, on a few occasions it caught Mrs WW hair or cheek rather than her eye but that's fair enough and no one other than me will ever notice. The small number of complete focus misses is another issue but it could have caught something in the air or I could have moved the focus ring. It's something I'll look at over time.

These good modern lenses and fancy AF systems are just a different way of taking pictures for me :D
 
And a PS to my last post.

I've recently set up the two memory setting on the top dial, one for aperture priority and the other for manual both with wide area and face recognition. I normally use aperture until the light level drops taking the shutter speed with it and I then normally switch to manual and dial in appropriate aperture and shutter settings and let the ISO float. Having two setup saved allows me to change things very quickly and still be able to switch to aperture of manual when I don't want the area focusing or face recognition.

It really does make quite a change from using manual lenses with one focus point.

Reading the Nikon thread I am slightly underwhelmed but things may be different once it's all tested and understood. We'll have more excitement when Canon announce their mirrorless :D
 
Anyone on here with a RX1Rii? I’ve done a search and there’s not much around on this camera and since it shares the sensor with the A7 I thought I’d ask. I’ve currently got an RX100 mark one and a Canon 50D with a couple of lenses and am looking at something small and pocketable to replace both. I was thinking A6500 and a nice prime but then started looking at the RX1Rii and started GASsing wondering if that’s the camera I need (OK, want :o))).

I travel a lot but taking a DSLR is not feasible and somehow I always feel a bit let down with the images from the RX100 (operator error perhaps) so was looking at a RX100VA and then up came the RX1...

Don;;t want to hijack the thread but this seems the most active sony thread so thought I’d ask...

Just until someone who knows more about the RX1 answers...

Have you thought about an A7 series camera instead? The RX1 looks to be a very nice camera and it has a very nice lens but it's expensive and you can never change the lens. An A7 series is bigger and you don't get that nice 35mm f2 but could be more flexible as you could get a nice compact 35mm f2.8 or the cheaper Samyang and change the lens if you want to... Just a thought :D and hopefully someone who's had an RX1 will be along soon...

Fuji X-100F would be a left field choice, same focal length, small and much cheaper.
 
An A7 had popped into my thoughts, as had an A6500 (like the idea of IBIS) but it’s really the form I want and like my current RX100. Having tried the RX100V in Jessops I see the tech has moved on massively and I like a viewfinder too. I like the idea of full frame in that package and honestly the Leica q just leaves me “meh”. I know the Sony menus and the like so the RX1 is where my thinking (currently) lies. Tomorrow I may have another great idea...

Fuji X100f was also a consideration but I’ve heard mixed reviews (outside of the X100 thread obviously ;)) but I keep coming back to the idea of a full frame sensor and the Sony tech in that size package. However, I’m also realistic and see that it’s very expensive, even used, and an RX100VA would probably give me 90% of its performance at a quarter of the price. But, but, but when has sensibility ever been a consideration? :thinking::ROFLMAO:
 
Not to put you off too much as the Rx1 looks to be a lovely camera but another thing that turned me away from that camera and to an A7 was the thought that if I got contamination on the sensor there'd be nothing I could do about it whereas an A7 sensor is easily cleaned.

I know that an RX1 is less likely to get dust bunnies but I just have a problem shifting that thought from my mind and I do have a problem with the idea of spending a lot on a fixed lens camera, just incase it does happen.

There are some really nice blogs/reviews of this camera, I'm sure you've googled your way to some.
 
I had an RX1 for a while, they say never meet your idols and it was kinda a case of that. The RX1RII is probably my dream camera as it addresses a number of the issues I had with the first one, but I also know it'll still be a pain in the arse.

Battery life is beyond appalling and as mentioned above once you have dust on the sensor you have an (expensive) problem on your hands.

Leaf shutter aside it's hard to justify vs an a7RII and 35mm 2.8. The RX1RII is small but it's not really pocketable, so if you're going to have it in a small bag anyway an a7 body and small prime really isn't going to feel all that different.
