The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

It's doesn't need one, it's that awesome. :D

On a serious note it's the shortest lens of the three and the hood is shorter too. But it and it's hood are wider than the other two.

Shorter by like 1mm..... It's so awesome with its softness wide open and huge amounts of CA

But you're saying e mount lenses are ugly? Are they? The GM looks the same as canikon and the Zeiss look better.

It was a joke. But i admire you jumping to your Sony’s defence so quickly.

Seriously though the zeiss lenses are actually my favourite. Have a premium feel and look to them.

;) Sure it was and I wasn't wrong. 'My Sonys' what like I own GM or Zeiss

I have the 70-200mm GM. It's pretty awesome but also huge. Let's see if Nikon can come out with something smaller and good with PF lenses.

Aaaaaaanyway… I thought I'd report back on my new toy, a 85mm f1.8...

I was surprised how crushed and mangled the outer box was, they must have run over it with a truck but the inner box was ok and looked very small and surely too small to contain an 85mm f1.8? But no, there was one inside :D

It's sharper than I thought it'd be at f1.8 and is very probably at least a match for the Sigma f1.4 I had. I tried using it with face detect and it seemed to work reasonably well although I did get a few pictures which were OOF so I'll have to see if I can work out what's going on and if it's my fault or something else.

f1.8. Dull and beginning to rain a bit.

I've had second thoughts about getting an A7III but I might change my mind again later :D

Pricey for an 85mm 1.8, but looks a nice lens, definitely one I'd be interested in if I ever went to Sony

No idea :D I had to google this one. On Amazon seems to be £160+ more than the equivalent for Nikon or Canon

It's years since I looked at the Canon and at the time it wasn't very good. Dunno if they're redone it or not but if they haven't I wouldn't be interested and it was because it was regarded as being relatively poor that I went for the Sigma f1.4.

Some of the Sony lenses do tend to be at the more expensive end against DSLR lenses judging by their spec... like this 85mm f1.8 and the 55mm f1.8 and people do tend to think that these f1.8 lenses should be cheap but I don't think you can really judge the new Sony lenses which tend to be good against the older DSLR designs which are sometimes rather weak performers. Back when I had my 5D I wouldn't have been interested in that Canon 85mm f1.8 at any price ditto their 50mm f1.8 or f1.4 :D

I can't speak for the Canon, but the Nikon 85mm 1.8G was one of my favorite lenses. It's great bang for buck, as they say.

Had them all, and taken good images with them all.

But pretty sure you also take good images on a polly pocket sparkly camera from toys r us .......

What's the aperture on that bad boy?

DO you think the Sony is worth £160+ more? I don't know a whole lot about Sony lenses but I often hear or read people say they won't switch to Sony because their lenses are too pricey

The Sony 85mm/1.8 is worth it. It's a newer better performing lens than the canon 85mm/1.8 which is rather old and hence cheaper.

But generally speaking Sony lenses are more expensive unfortunately.

If only lens prices deceased in line with their maximum aperture. The loxia 85mm would cost pennies ;)

You have to look at the age of the lenses or at least their historical price corrected for inflation.

I'm not saying that the Sony 85mm f1.8 is a bargain and the Canikon lenses may well be cheaper but I don't know how old they are. If the Canikon lenses have been out a while, maybe aren't as good and are still "only" £160 or so cheaper then the Sony IMO maybe doesn't look all that bad :D

I have old manual lenses which in their day cost in the region of £600 when adjusted for inflation and next to the likes of the Sony 55mm f1.8 or this 85mm f1.8 they just don't stand a chance IQ wise :D

PS.
For comparison as I also have MFT, the Panasonic 15mm which I think you have is in the region of £450 and their 45mm f1.2 is over £1k.

The Sony is better than both the Canon and Nikon G, less CA, sharper, faster AF and smoother OOF. At the moment it's 100 more than the Nikon but even at full price it's worth it.

And the build quality is lovely on the 85.

Last night I was feeling like my part switch to Sony was the wrong thing to do with the Z6/Z7 coming, but then looking at reports this morning, they’ve only got one card slot.

Looking at the pictures and vids I think the Nikon looks a better camera than the A7, just looking at the styling and the finish. I don't know if I'd use those two buttons near the lens mount though.

How much do the 28-70 kit lenses sell for when split from a kit?
