The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Back when I was into sports cars sometimes I'd think "Oh no, what have I done..." but I knew I had to stick with it and give it time. I knew people who claimed to be able to get into a car and immediately get the best out of it, others claimed they could get there in a few hours or maybe days but I always called that BS. I used to give myself 6 months before I'd know the car and its limits and be able to claim to get the best out of it. Even when changing tyres I'd give myself a little time beyond the initial bedding in period when new tyres are sh!t before deciding if I'd done the right thing.

I know it takes all sorts but I do think that some chop and change a little too quickly.

Just sayin.

:D

Performance v overall system cost.
True, but if starting from scratch and buying comparable latest lenses then there's not a lot in it in the lenses we've been discussing (70-200mm f2.8, 80/100-400mm). 3 months ago I'd have taken someones hand off to have the D850.

Knowing if you like something and getting the best out of it are two different things though (y)

But you're not, you're losing, to buy more expensive, with possible compromise. I'm not trying to be a hypocrite... I use like 1 lens so my chop and change is simple. Sorry I added more to that post.

Why would I want a D850?! You were not shocked I didn’t want one before so why the sudden change of opinion?!

Because he needs to justify it to himself now that he’s changed his mind! Lol
2 days ago Sony was the right camera for him, holds a D850 for a day and he’s back thinking about Nikon lol, have those lovely Sony advantages suddenly vanished? ;)

Well it a upgrade not a downgrade from a Sony A7r11 to a fuji lol

you were saying you wanted faster AF and better MP the A7riii is certainly not a faster AF the D850 would of been

Two very different systems though, you won’t have the mirrorless advantages on the D850.

Like I said to you earlier, some things just gel.... immediately. It doesn't take 4 weeks of polishing and cupboard testing.

Yep, not easy when you're heavily invested. It would probably work out the same cost to me whichever way I went though tbh as I'd hang onto my Olly gear if I went the Nikon route. If I went the Sony route I'd sell the Olly gear which would make up most of the difference between swapping to Sony and swapping to the D850. I can't help but be impressed with that Sony 70-200mm f2.8 though. I thought my VRII was sharp but that Sony looks in a different league.

Slightly off on a tangent, it's a shame DXO haven't scored the Nikon lenses with the D850 yet to see what that combo does (or doesn't do) for my current lenses.

I agree with the 70-200 Lens. Even from what I have seen the 70-200 F4 is even sharper than the 2.8 nikon I had.. But there different things to factor thou not just the lens it can be the Mirrorless advantage too??

Luckily I am not heavily invested. I have only ever really had a max of 3 lenses at once. I have been running Nikon FX for some time now. Ever since the D600 came about so this is not quick change for me, but I’m looking forward to it!

I see your predicament, thing Is, from what I've seen, the 70200 gm isn't as good as the is2 which is worse than the FL which is supposedly the best 70200 on the market..... so there's a spanner.

My point is a valid one like previously.
Should have tested other Nikon bodies first before moving to Sony and now thinking it was a mistake.
Will be interesting to see which way this goes.... :)

I’ll ignore the polishing and cupboard testing comment for now!

Not sure what the mirrorless advantage is? My 70-200mm is tack sharp the vast majority of the time so it's nothing to do with front/back focus (y)

I've not seen any scores or sample images from the Nikon tbh, just a shame they messed with the damn focus/zoom ring.

Wouldn't matter I was going to sell the lot anyway to move to a D850 if I was as the Sigma wouldn't work right. and was going sell the 70-200 to fund other lens since I can borrow one when needed so I not lost anything really

Seriously though, if you can switch to 1 system from 2 at the same cost and performance it's worth it... even at a little more dosh.

Ha ha well I reckon Toby is in 2 minds.. I honestly think if the D850 had 2 SD slots he going that route and I wouldn't blame him.. My mate just got it and WOW didn't realise what a camera it was
Wait till you see what the a7r3 does.

Haven't read through all of this so are you switching? What's the pro's if it's not the FPS and AF?
Pros of what, switching to the Sony? None particularly, it would just give me a one camera setup rather than the Nikon and Olympus. AF and FPS are important, just not for most of my Wildlife pics. For sports it’s most definitely important, but then there’s nothing wrong with my D750.

So why think about changing? An itch as much as anything, had the D750 since release and fancy a change. Also I’ve fancied a high res camera for a while as I do crop a lot, and I’ve been wanting a wider AF spread as I do find that I’m often limited by the D750’s and have to compose differently to what I’d ideally like.

I do like the advantage of mirrorless being able to swap between VF and Liveview without loss of performance, but ergonomically the Sonys aren’t the best. I’m not making a rush decision and will be trying the Sony out at some point (tried the D850 last year), but whilst I’m waiting it’ll allow me to time to try and raise funds from somewhere. I could end up doing neither if I can’t raise the funds ;)

So after having issues with the last Samyang 35 1.4 I had I looked at all the alternatives and came to the conclusion it was either buy the Zeiss 1.4 / 2.8 or another Samyang. Couldn't deal with the 2.8 so opted for another Samyang. This one seems to be worlds better than the one I had previously.

Really missed not having the 35 1.4 at the last wedding I shot though was very happy how the images came out.
What was the issues

So the only reason you want to go morrorless is because of the live view performance?

...... buy a 5d iv and some of canons glass. You'll save money.

Lol of course not. You’ve read my other gazillion posts so know my reasons (y)

And you wouldn't consider the 850 because of the QXD cards long-term future? Its that genuinely an issue, let's be honest, the couple you'll buy at the start will last you the 5 years max you'll keep it.

One thing to keep in mind is the end product. Do you want a print and if so how big or do you want to fill a screen?

I find 16mp MFT and 24mm A7 files good enough to crop to 100% and sometimes even a little more if all I want is to fill my computer screen. I don't know how big a print a 100% crop will make but certainly good enough for me to fill an A4.

What do you want, prints or screen viewing and how big and what have you found cropped pictures to be like?

It’s not an absolute deal breaker no, especially since I’ve done some reading on it this afternoon.

The reason I started to look at Sony was downsizing (for certain things) and the one camera fits all solution.

I’ll have a better idea whether the Sony is the right move when I’ve managed to get hands on with the camera and the 70-200mm f2.8 and the 100-400mm attached.

TBH I just wish you could get a FF EM1, I really enjoy using that ;)

I’m a bit of a stickler for IQ and whilst I have cropped the odd image from my D750 to 1:1 the IQ isn’t as good as I’d like just viewing on a screen let alone printing to A3 for example.

But as I’ve mentioned before having 18 or 20mp in DX mode would allow me to use a 80/100-400mm lens rather than my current 150-600mm and save weight.

Each to your own, it's your money and all that. But, is there really much weight difference between the 750/70-200 and the Sony combo. I still don't get this weight argument, it's negligible with pro lenses still, especially lumps like the two you mention. 850 to quash that itch, or there's creams readily available for a snip of an XQD card.

The D750 with 70-200 2.8e is 30g difference lol weight not really an argument there at all!
