With regards to weight that’s why I said in some situations. For example, my walkabout combo for the D750 is with the 24-120mm f4. With the A7riii I’d use the 24-70mm f4 which does make a difference. Now I know you’re not comparing apples with apples but Nikon don’t do a 24-70mm f4 for some reason. An A7riii with 24-70mm f4 would also be small enough and light enough to take on holiday so I could ditch the EM1.

With the 70-200mm I would imagine it actually feels better on the D750 and therefore I’d likely add the grip to the A7 meaning no weight saving at all. But when I’m using the 70-200mm I’m usually doing a specific event, in which case I’m ‘happy’ to have the weight.

As I said though these are just thoughts at the mo until I can get hands on and see how I feel so everything’s kinda hypothetical ;)

P.s. what’s creams?

There's one called decree absolute, prescribed by the missus if you don't get this right. Honestly, I think you're splitting hairs, but if you want a change, which seems like many people enjoy, then go for it.

A part of me feels strange to put down so much cash for a “nifty” fifty. Could get a used Canon 50/1.2 for less. Or wait for Sigma 50/1.4 which should be less, and I don’t think the Zeiss 50/1.4 is better optically for more.

And if I bring my A73 in to try it out I might get a few questions how I got it early :p

The size and IQ of the Sony makes it worth it for me. Also the autofocus performance leaves both them lenses way behind. It's mainly a lens geared towards video for me but is also great for stills

I need to find someone who do me a direct swap with my Fuji 56/1.2. LCE only offered me £400!!!

As a new lens the Fuji is listed for sale £100 more at the moment.
 
If I'm being honest the Canon 50 1.2 was one of the worst 50s I've ever used especially given the cost. It was soft as mush the one I had at 1.2 and only sharpened up about f/2.2 +

Wouldn’t get it for the sharpness, I just like really wide apertures lenses.

No good when the entire frame is totally rubbish IQ wise wide open. Three of my fellow tog friends all have the same sentiments about it ie totally unusable at 1.2
 
The last Canon wedding I shot was with the 16-35 f4 IS (amazing lens) 50 1.2 and 85 1.2 were total disasters and put the final nail in the coffin for dslr for me.

I'm willing to give up uber wide apertures in place of knowing my image is gonna be razor sharp and not worrying about focus accuracy

I'm mega anal about ensuring the lenses were tuned and done my best to make sure they were calibrated to each body as best as possible

Changing to Sony has been a breath of fresh air for me and I'll never go back (albeit expensive change hahaha)

Why total disaster? I’ve recently switched primes to new canon 85 1.4, sigma art 50 1.4 and canon 35 1.4. Getting very good results with these.

Neither of the 2 lenses were very good wide open. Hit rate was pants. Ended up having to stop them down quite abit

I agree, but crazy would have been my choice of word.

But rookies has said he’s not losing anything by Switching from Nikon to Sony, then back again including £££. So not a bad move as it just means he’s got to test the Sony out, however he should have got a A7R III if high-resolution was the aim.

Although having to borrow a lens off a mate isn’t a ideal situation it’s a cheaper option :D
He did own a Nikkor 70-200mm before though.

@ rookies what Nikon gear are you looking at?

There's a fair chance. Depends how it feels in the hand when I try it out. I've not been impressed with the ergonomics of the previous A7's, but apparently the A7Riii and A9 are slightly different.

They are better, not far off D750 weight and they seem to have got the balance of the 70-200 just right. It feels as well balanced as the 2.8e but with the zoom ring in the right place lol.

The newer bodies definitely feel better and the larger buttons and focus stick make a huge difference.

Better get the battery grip too for days when portability isn’t needed.

Surely if you are having to borrow a lens to cover what he already has there is money lost. Yeah he might not be spending more money, but also not getting the lenses! Relying on a mates lens is not ideal!

No money lost but really what is the gain of moving?

I see where he is coming from with that, I have changed systems a few times in the last year and not lost any money by it.

Its ok 1000 clicks on the D500, 350 on an A7iii, don't fancy the next camera getting past 100..........he'll soon have a glass cabinet as well :D:D:D

The problem is that too many search for the holy grail, it just doesn't exist, much better to find a camera system that you like using, and go and use it, taking pictures is what it is all about.

Now the main reason Rookies said he was going to Sony (I can’t be arsed to search for it) is for live view as he uses it a lot and it’s not good in Nikon D500. Has the 850 got new and improved live view?

I had a quick read, the first thing I found was

"Live view focus on the D850 is pretty fast. You won't be capturing any moving subjects with it of course, but for single snaps it's pretty good and faster than the D810."

I think it still using CDAF not PDAF, so probably not so good for AF-C
