The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I've been tempted by the samyang 35 1.4 but quite happy with the 2.8 actually. Especially for day time shooting. The 1.4 will be handy for low light and separation.

Just seen a bit more info from Sigma on their new E Mount lenses

https://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/index.php?route=information/news&news_id=306

They specifically compare to MC-11 adapted lenses

...the new Sony E-mount models will feature a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed.
In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Sony’s Continuous AF (AF-C) and high-speed autofocus, which are not addressed by SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11.

So they are not simply a built in MC-11, but have a revised set of electronics which has been set up to provide a greater degree of compatibility. :)

@jonneymendoza @addicknchips

How is the focussing speed of canon 85mm/1.2 on Sony with metabones? I heard it's actually faster/better than it is on a canon.
I have only ever tried it on a canon body and it was rather bad...

Or if I want decent AF should I just look for the 85mm GM?

(Use case is mainly portraits and family shots)

They GM isn't fast either.

On A7rii I found it as fast or faster than on the 6d.
Works very well outside.

But I’ve had reliability issues with 4 adapters.

Now the question is how does one shoot portraits without eye-AF :D
Focus and recompose is so last decade :D

Also does focus and recompose even work accurately @f/1.2

You move your AF point over the eye. Focus and recompose doesn't really work with fast lenses.

Can’t do that if they moving. My idea is daughter doesn’t keep still so the eye keep tracking then ta da press button

Ah... sadness :(
It's quicker to MF than move focus point on A7RII. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a joystick or touchscreen :p

at 1.2 you're keeper rate won't be overly high.
re mf when the metabones gave up in low light i switched to focus peaking. thought i was nailing every shot as had the "terminator" eyes. turns out focus peaking isn't that great at 1.2 either.

Or you could move the AF point/camera to frame and use CAF. Not difficult. Focus recompose is pretty useless for moving stuff ime.

That why I though use auto eye so when u am
Following it the eye is in focus all the time

How about the samyang 35 f1.4?

Need to look at it closer, did consider it before but wasn’t available.

Now I am wondering...
samyang 35/1.4 vs. sigma ART 35/1.4 in FE vs. sigma art 35/1.4 with mc-11/metabones...

Well if one can afford that then I don't think they'd really consider the above as options... :p

The Sony Zeiss 35 f1.4 is great, but and its a big but, you may need to try several to get a good one, it has well known sample variation.
I’d bet the native Sigma 35 will perform better than an adapted Canon mount but that’s already very good with the MC-11.

the samyang doesn't have the build quality of the zeiss - but seems on par in most other departments. at less than half the price its not to be sniffed at.

Eye AF just makes it easier to achieve the same result.

Since most of my shooting has shifted from not shooting any people to pretty much only shooting people portraits, eye AF has suddenly started making a lot of difference.

The FE85mm/1.8 is quite good at that, it's snappy and fast to focus. I am wondering if I should just keep it for that.

Go bhphoto and put in an order for something that costs the same as A7III (since you can't order it yet). I picked Sony A7S and here's how much they'll charge:

Subtotal: $1,998.00
Shipping starting from$32.66
Duties & Taxes $432.13

You Pay: $2,462.79

Since you pay duties up front you pay nothing when you recieve the pack.

That converts to £1,773.13 (using xe.com), and on a good day you could probably get it cheaper.

So yeah UK pricing is a rip-off

So crazy...

I would've thought nearer the 1.5k mark when it settles... pondering... will need to see decent reviews... GAS is building.

i think its a pretty safe bet. I'm just wondering if i should get an x-h1 instead..

I expect Panamoz to charge around £1400-1500 since we are not paying any taxes or duties.

What is experience of people with gray imports in terms of warranty claims. Are they good at after sales support? Who are the best gray importer with good after sales support?

I have never gray imported myself....

won't be £600 cheaper right off the bat.
Panamoz are the best I've dealt with. excellent customer service. there are a million threads about the various options on this forum. just be prepared for some to label you a criminal and a fraudster though.
