The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I will. Are you thinking of getting a D5? Have you ever owned a pro body like dx before?

Nope, I dont like cameras that size, Ive owned a 1dsii and handled a D3s, I really dont get on with the size or weight, especially as I dont shoot sport and the DXxx/5dx offer pretty much the same for far less cost and bulk. For me to buy one of these would be like owning a Humvee in London.

if your not making money from sport etc I cant see why you would want to buy it and what it does better than your 5d3 but hey if you have the budget and want it mate go for it ;-)

Yea why not lol. Na I am considering. I most likely won't buy one.

Hope the 5dx is just a 1dx2 without the bulk

I think youre crazy, fair enough if you were getting paid or your main style was sport but tbh your 5d3 will cope with what you want quite easily. Seems like youre throwing money away especially if you start adding longer lenses.

It has better dynamic range apparently hehe.

But yes your right. 5dx should have Dr that matches a Sony sensor. If not I won't even bother with that either

True. Well said

I know I've said it before but is your current kit not delivering results for you Jonney or do you just want some new boxes? Looking at your shots on Flickr I can't see why a 5D3/A7 combo can't deliver the studio/street style images you upload?

Your right. my combo does the job no doubt about that

Don't let me influence you buying new toys mate but I would try not to get hung up on one camera DR being worse than another. In the real world, and certainly in a controlled studio, it really doesn't matter for 99% of your shots.

Id say in the real world it does matter, in controlled environment much less. Looking at Jonneys images though it doesnt really look like he takes advantage of it so for him it probs wont matter.

I've never shot with the highest-end kit but people still pay me to shoot their weddings/portraits/events which, as a paid photographer, I see as the priority. None of my clients have ever asked to see their prints at 200% on screen before approval nor have they ever come back and said that they'd love the results if only there was another stop of DR ;0). I've also had magazines happy to print double-page gallery images that I shot on a 400D with kit lens so sometimes it's not about having the 'best' kit on paper but actually getting the results.

I realise that there are extreme situations where more DR and better high ISO are your only options but I'd say they're less common on the whole.

Its only when i travel that i take advantage of ISO and DR. thats where the a7r2 fits in.

Although questions need to me asked on how rugged it is for certain climate conditions.

Clearly you dont need the DR either, only people who push their files enough do, I know you kind of make do with what you have (not that its a bad thing!!). Once youve seen the recovery ability of something like a D750/800 you start using it to your advantage. I do a fair amount in post and having those 2 stops make a huge difference in achieving my end result. To me DR is as important as good ISO performance. You can achieve more with one exposure if you have more DR.

I agree that it's something that's nice to have. I shot with a D750 for the first time the other week and the files are very nice but my point for Jonney was that the kit he has is more than capable of delivering great results so maybe he shouldn't be so quick to buy the next toy under the idea that it will somehow offer him a leap over what he's already got.

I probably should add that if I had bottomless pockets like Jonney seems to have then maybe I'd be keen to buy the next toy more often but my kit needs to bring in its outlay in return for income hence sticking with it while it delivers the results my clients want.

Yeah, theres not much in Jonneys flickr that indicates to me he really needs an extra stop or two of DR tbh. His current gear doesnt appear to be holding him back.
