If they promised not to put christmas songs on in the shops until the 14th december Id accept the fireworks with glee.
Morning everyone
I think that they shouldn't be sold to the general public on safety grounds and because tbey frighten people's pets
it's a big deal for dog owners especially although our cats aren't too bothered
organised displays are fine tho
I thought that was Mark Knopfler.its in dire straights.

Yep, so about 5-10 nights out of 365. I can see the merit into banning them and the OP's point.
You know he's polish right? One of my favourite musicians...
id say more like a few weeks of the year in total.
i think the sale should be taken away from the public and only set off as part of organised displays. at least that would restrict it to a few days a year and cause less disruption and torment to peoples pets.

for once i agree with you, people setting them off up and beyond 11pm in some cases. And peoples children and people who like an early night. I work long hours and start early, and often go to bed early, its highly annoying when they are set off disturbing my sleep, and presumably others who have to go to bed early to start early.

I believe this is what they do in Australia, I don't think the public can buy them but organised displays are put on.Morning everyone

I lived in Bournemouth till I was 19 and used to love the free displays put on every Friday night off the pier over the summer (and I think Poole did displays on Thursday nights), I lived a few miles from the pier so would watch from further down the coast. So my memory of fireworks in Bournemouth was always free (although I don't recall what we did on Nov 5th).You've never been to Bournemouth have you? Free? Does not compute.
I forgot about those, yes they're free. But on the actual 5th (or thereabouts) I dont think theres anything.I lived in Bournemouth till I was 19 and used to love the free displays put on every Friday night off the pier over the summer (and I think Poole did displays on Thursday nights), I lived a few miles from the pier so would watch from further down the coast. In the past, I worked nights and it was highly disturbing when people would go about their daily business what with cars and buses, road works and helicopters. Everyone else in the world should be looking after my interests. Me! Me! Me!And peoples children and people who like an early night. On a more serious note, I've never had issues with fireworks even if they go off at 2-3 am. If they were that much of an issue, I might wear ear plugs. Kids having fireworks is more of a problem but there are larger problems with kids having access to drugs and alcohol.
I don't mind people having garden displays,
but why do they have to try an out compete the local organised one
in terms of loudness?
Its been like the battle of the Somme here
for the past two weeks,
from about 6pm - midnight!
And I guess it will be for the next two weeks too!
If it were say Nov 5th and the following week-end,
should the 5th be a week day, that's plenty surely?
What happened to penny bangers and sixpence rockets?
I looked at prices recently and it's quite staggering the
amount of money that you would need to spend
to have something "half decent"
It's not about me, me, me but more about how the impact of other peoples enjoyment can have a negative impact on other peoples (and their pets/childrens) lives. I am not saying I fully support a ban of fireworks, but can see why someone may wish it to happen. Fireworks make a lot of noise and can upset peoples sleep, pets and children.
Fireworks aren't like cars, buses and road works, but an optional activity and whilst travel and repair to our infrastructure is essential for the greater public good, I cannot say fireworks are and if they disturb a significant number of people, I can see why the OP made this thread.

I personally wouldn't mind what you are proposing as, unless you're willing to spend loads of money, the organised displays are in a league way way way above anything you'd do at home so I don't see the point.
I have mixed feelings on this as I find the ban all proponents are restricting my freedom.
Full fat cheese is allegedly bad for us - ban that? etc
My dog is not bothered by fireworks as I made apoint of walking up to a local clay shoot when she was young and we ignored the bangs.
Where I live we get fireworks all year round with the ethnic festivals and, of course, the local drug dealers letting their customers know that a delivery has arrived
I can see that but I was trying to point out the futility. Someone will always be upset/negatively affected by someone else. Put more than one human on the planet and you're gonna get arguments and differences of opinion.... the impact of other peoples enjoyment can have a negative impact on other peoples ...
Animals can't distinguish between organised displays and people setting off fireworks in their gardens.

I find dogs barking at night more distracting because it happens more times through the year. It's still not enough of a bother for me to do anything about it.
I had a neighbour with a dog that did that. I called their phone and went woof woof down the line every time it happened . Did this a few times and think they've moved the dog to a bit of the house to sleep in that makes it less audible.
Yes but organised displays are normally in park's and similar places away from houses and are normally on over one weekend so it's not such a problem anyway
2/365, you're having a Giraffe. They've been going off for at least 3 weeks already here, plus people get them to celebrate birthdays at other times in the year, then there is New Years also. I reckon we get a months worth spread over the course of a year, at least.Part of me agrees with the OP part of me thinks it's a step too far as they effect about 2/365 days of the year.

As for pets, as soon as our cat hears the fireworks, she comes flying into the room, leaps up onto the windowsill and happily sits there watching them.
