Sensor cleaning disaster - UPDATE

Its only a square bit of glass..surely they make them SOMEWHERE!

  its a highly complex and sophisticated filter!!:suspect: :suspect:

Sadly, I think this is another case of rip-off Canon UK. Its such a shame as they're the leading edge in R&D and IQ (sorry Darksiders, but its true) and let themselves down so badly with UK franchises that rip off their loyal customers. OK, soapbox safely stowed for the day, back to Janice.

I honestly dont know chuck - i'd be scouring the net now for independent retailers like our friends at MPB Photographics sales@mpbphotographic.co.uk to see if they could help or point in the right direction....

Did your sensor swabs arrive yet? I still think that under all that detritus any problem is minimal - I hope anyway

Just stop it!

Clean it then see if you need to fret over it!

Thanks, Dad! ;) (only joking Robert....I consider you as a very dependable person you see!) :D

I will try cleaning first...although it looks as clean and shiny as a clean shiny thing...with a couple of scratches on it visible to the naked eye.

Later.

I have always found Colchester to be more expensive than Fixation. Have you had a quote from them?

the wedding is in a castle and she wants a shot of her and the groom at the bottom of a huge staircase with all the guests up the stairs.....sounds like I could need pretty decent dof for that one!

But remember you need a decent shutter speed first and foremost. Shoot wide (17mm on a 30D), set aperture to f5.6 or even f8 and focus at around 3m-4m and everything beyond 1.6m will be sharp and in focus. You do not require very small apertures. Honest :)

Don't shoot with small apertures and slow shutter speeds as you'll end up with blur as people move. Don't let your shutter speed fall below say 1/30th. Even at that if you are shooting a group and someone moves their head you may get blur! Very small apertures are fine for landscapes but not so much for wedding photography. Wide angle lenses can be your friend.

Probably best to get it fixed or borrow another and use your own as a backup but you could still do it.

Yay! FIxation have looked it up in the Canon spares list (as their internet isnt working at the moment!) and found the low-pass-filter as one item so they say they could fit it as about £100 parts and £100 labour +VAT

making £235 (2 lots of postage to add too.) getting better
(bit different to yesterday's quote of £415 isnt it!!)

BUT of course....this is all surmising I need it repaired.

I will take that route after Robert's pads come through (good old Royal Mail!) and I clean with eclipse...then if it doesnt work I have a try with some Smear Away.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Smear Away first! If its grease you'll be in there for a month of Sundays sorting it with Eclipse.

Honestly! ;) :D

Steady boy!! I wish I could get you that excited, Jonny!! ;)

I will try both.............as Ive done lots of Eclipse already, I will try that first...cant do any harm.

been reading this with real interest and i hope it does turn out to be just really stubborn dirt. if not and a new camera is needed there are quite a few places that i am sure would be willing to do interest free credit or buy now pay later terms so don't rush into anything in a panic. just checked, warehouse express is doing both.
as i say hope it doesn't come to this but may be worth remembering.
pbh

Nice to hear there is light at the end of the tunnel for you Janice.
I wish your stuff would arrive so you can put us all out of our misery :)
Oh my glue spreaders came today, will clean later.
That gooey stuff looks good, would give that a try myself.

I am actually 100% certain they are all scratches.

I dont need to take a photo to see them...I just look at the sensor glass with my eyes, catch it in the light and there they all are.
Scratched. not smeared.

I'll give it a go tomorrow, then wait till i have £255.
I only have £80 at the mo, and none coming in....any ideas how I can make some dosh quicktime, Jonny???? :D  :naughty:

18 year old boys at the front please!! :D

Ah.... I see..... You want me to pay..... OK, as you're in distress an all ;) what do i get for a full sense r :naughty: :naughty:

i knew as soon as Id said that, Paul! :D

 :D

clever!!!

Getting all the youngsters out of the way in the first 5 minutes.

Well Im still at work waiting for the damn postman to bring me Robert's sensor swabs!

Then I will Eclipse it, Smear Away it (that arrived this morning by courier!) then eclipse again.

Then I suspect I will see very nice CLEAN scratches! :D

Well, the time has come, guys.

Sorry to say I told you so...........but...............I told you so! :|

Thanks, RObert for you sensor swabs, and spare sheets etc.
Did it 2 times with Eclipse, and 2times with smear away.

There is no dirt on it at all.........just lots of scratches..exactly as before...which can all be seen with the naked eye on looking into the chamber.

Thanks for all your help on this everyone.

I just want to add a final line....then Id like the thread locked by a mod please to save it going on and on.

DO NOT WORRY ABOUT CLEANING YOUR SENSOR. USE THE COPPERHILL METHOD, IT IS FINE.

I HAVE BEEN USING IT PERFECTLY WELL FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS WITH NO PROBLEMS.

I WILL SAY...DON'T CLEAN YOUR SENSOR WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY!

THE WHOLE THING WAS ENTIRELY MY OWN FAULT AND NOT SOMETHING THAT WILL HAPPEN TO MOST OTHERS.

Thanks again,

Janice
