Sensor cleaning disaster - UPDATE

s***ake mushrooms thats rather bad. I'd get it cleaned and if there are still marks throw a paddy in the store.
 
When you say your going to replace sensor glass? Are you taking about the filter infront of the sensor (IR abosrbtion filter)

If you have damaged that or your sensor (unlikely) then it will not pass for repair. It will be a replacement I think.
 
Janice - sorry to hear this. I papped my package last week when i got grease on my sensor so kinda know how you feel. I'd go for the clean first.... Canon themselves will do this for £50 and are likely to have the best resources for knowing whether a clean or repair is your answer.

If you need cheering up, just pop over in said low cut dress and I'll find something to make you laugh :naughty: ;) :lol: (at)

Ive logged on a few times throughout today (in between slopping a paintbrush around) and Ive winced every time Ive looked in on this thread, Janice.
I soo hope you get something sorted.
I have a couple of cracking pieces of crud on my sensor... been there since the day I got the cam and after reading this and knowing my luck... theyre staying there.

OMG that looks bad, I don't want to try cleaning my sensor at all. Just hope you get a good outcome Janice. Too scared to clean my 5D sensor after reading someone 'buggered' it with eclispe :(

I used eclipse on mine as i was desperate - no problems to report (didn't use much tho) - I will be investing in their 5d and 400d alternative for long term use tho!!
 
It wasnt eclipse that buggered it.......thats just the fluid,,, it was me rubbing too hard (no comments please! :D :lol: :naughty: )

Not the tools but the workman!! :D
 
I never seemed to get my sensor clean, I was being VERY soft with the pressure. Now after reading your thread I'm thinking it may be worth £50 once a year to get Canon to do it.

I hope it's not too expensive to get it sorted, I'd tell the store your problem and ask for some sort of deal. £50 for a clean and if that don't work say £25 off a new sensor glass

The marks look more like scratches after your second attempt :(

If you re-used a pec pad, theres a good chance that the pad became further ingressed with grit/dirt. Always one wipe per side of pad, then in the bin.

Dang, just saw you have a 30D. I was going to suggest buying another body (if you had a 300/350/400D) and flogging the damaged one (indeed if it is damaged, it might still be ok) on eBay for a cut price to recoup some funds.

I work in optical engineering and assembly myself, and I have access to all the cleaning stuff I could ever need. I've only ever huffed dirt off a sensor once, using filtered breathing air. Damn internets gone and made me all paranoid about using a wiping technique :( My 20D is looking pretty dirty now too :(

just read this whole post with interest and hope you get it sorted.

Regards the wedding, your images should still look fine. As you note your scratch (if it is that) won't show up at large apertures, You'll probably not require an aperture smaller than around f8 for a wide angle group shot and I'd advise having 2 cameras for the wedding anyway (what if yours actually broke down during the day - this really can happen)!

If you don't have the glass filter fixed, put a long lens on yours and keep the aperture larger than f5.6. With the other camera, use that one for wider shots and at the required time for group shots with smaller apertures.

I've been pretty rough at times with the pec pads and cleaning fluid too but rarely see much on my images (unless I really stop down smaller than f11).

Sometimes I get a faint view of my spots but these are usually pretty easily cleaned up in PS.

Take some portraits at various apertures and focal lengths to see what you can/cannot get away with.

Or as I guess you may do,...... get it sorted beforehand.
 
Janice, when is the wedding? I may be able to loan you my D60 for the week if im in town next time you come over to Sheffield, battery grip etc.

I feel I need to bite the bullet... get it repaired as soon as possible.

It's still in warranty...I bought it from Diego Garcia (Pete) and the bill says bought on 6/5/06....less than a year ago.

however, I dont think warranty covers me scratching the sensor!!

Also the bill is in his name...not mine. :shrug:

ive also read that the glass cant be replaced and the whole sensor has to be done. :(
 
Even after all you've done I'm still not convinced you have scratched it. That last picture the existing mark has got longer. Not possible unless there was still something abrasive sitting in that place.

I have spare glue spreaders and pec pads I can send you if you want to clean it properly - cost you nothing ;)

What Im thinking is that if it is a bit of grease or something thats not usually there.... then will eclipse alone get it off.....cos if it didnt first and just smeared it about...will it if I use more of it.

Is there any other liquid that might remove more stubborn stuff like grease or sticky stuff....parafin? petrol?,,, any ideas..then use Eclipse afterwards?

Visible dust 'Smear Away'. Does exactly what it says and works a treat :thumbs:
 
I'd play safe and try say 10 times with eclipse and see if it is fading or staying the same. If it is fading then just keep going.

Just to be contrary, I'd advocate trying once with smear away before any more eclipse goes in there. It will shift grease and oil with one application and you will then see rapidly if it's greasy or scratched. always a firm believer that x1 is 'safer' than x10 if grit is involved!!

Ive just had a quote from a Canon repair centre .... it has to be done in a clean room.... cant replace the glass as its all one piece........ £415 !

I paid Pete £600 for it, including the battery grip.



thats the end of me then. I dont think all my lenses add up to that even if I sell them. £500 i was going to get for the wedding, that will pay for that then.

Less distress Damsel - your f/4.5 shot is fine and most of the crap on your sensor will come off. Spend a couple of £ at WE for the smear away and you have a camera you can use at the wedding (even if it's not 100% unscratched). you may have to do a pit of PS after but nothing new there.

If the worst comes to the worst, repair after the wedding.

Trust me, I'm not a Doctor :)

I'll manage. ill just get everyone at the wedding to stand in a straight line and not in 2 rows and use F2.8 !!!:D :lol:
 
Well I didn't mean 10 times without looking :)

Janice, worst case is selling it on ebay with an honest description and someone will buy it gambling they can clean it 'properly' and get a bargain. Then you will see where you are for buying a new camera.

Just clean it yourself with the right stuff then decide if you really need to do something more drastic.

Borrow Ian's 600mm - you can have them as deep as you want (but you'll have to stand in the next county) ;) :lol: :D

bloody hell, Id be scared to do that.....if they then find its scratched and they have paid a couple of hundred quid for it...they will come round and kill me!! :D :lol:

Good advice Janice. Just shop out any marks you get, you're more than capable of doing that .Just don't get rid of your gear in a panic. ;)

Oi oi! (you know I am!!)

i cant clone out acrss the bride's face in about 200 photos can I.

that would take me weeks and weeks to do it perfectlyl! LOL

if im going to get it done...then i will get it done before the wedding I think.... because the scratches are still going to be there for my own shots and i cant live with it like it.....but £415!!! :eek:

He assured me that the sensor and glass is one piece......yet ive heard people talk about the senor and glass as being different things.

CT.... selling my gear will be my last resort. I already sold mostlly everything to get together enough for buying the 30d from Pete.
I sold my 350d, my Benbo tripod, my Sekonic light meter, lots of other bits etc. and have slowly bought their replacements.

I dont want to have to do it all again...................but needs must if thats the only way I can do it.

Better to have a camera and a nifty fifty... than a Sima 10-20, a Tamron 28-75 and no camera! :D
 
Hire one for the day for the wedding, use yours as the back up,
I wouldn't want to clone out that many marks, save you a lot of time as well.

I would use some smear Away, its amazing stuff. and a hell of a lot cheaper, got to be worth a go.
 
You're flapping again, though i appreciate this is just at reading the words touch and up.

You know where the 'scratches' are so keep them off the brides face - step back and crop. Honestly, it will be fine (although i do know what you mean about being irritated by things not being perfect)

There is a low pass filter in front of the sensor but i have no idea whether or not their physically one unit, sorry.

If the worst comes to the absolute worst, I have a 5d you can borrow, but please dont try to clean it ;)

There's no way you're going to use f19 at the wedding Janice. The 4.5 shot is fine. If you get any marks you really can't or don't want to deal with I'll sort 'em for you. :thumbs: You're worrying me a bit. -think it through before you start chucking the baby out with the bath water, :D
 
Janice you need to get the camera out and take some shots that would be similar to your wedding shots, and see if you can see any scratches. If using autolevels brings them out then dont use autolevels!
 
I dont consider that the F4.5 shot of the pink flowers on the previous page has enough dof for a wedding shot of guests do you?

Half the guests would be blurry..perhaps I will get them all p***ed and they wont notice! ;)
 
Right...................watch this space then........and when I get hold of Robert's bits tomorrow ( :eek: :naughty: :D ) I will post a new pic of the sensor.
 
Sent 1st class so expect them next week.
