Sensor cleaning disaster - UPDATE

Because it was an accident Janice and some policies have accidental damage cover. It's why people have accidents where they drop their tv/pc/laptop/1DsMk2 down the stairs after accidentaly tripping on something. Not that I suggest you chuck your camera down the stairs but if you have accidental damage cover, you've had an accident and it might cover the repairs to your camera.

Would the canon centre you mentioned inspect the sensor befor cleaning or repairing?

Al

thats what Im wondering. i guess if they clean then find it needs replacing I will have to pay for both. :(

i think it might be best to just go for the repair.

THE REAL ICING ON THE CAKE IS THIS.....I cleaned it this morning because I had planned to go to a "do" on the village greeen this afternoon, with birds of prey etc.

Just went over and its on May Day!
So didnt need to clean it in the first place. :( :'(

A place near me does sensor cleaning for £50..... very expensive if I then have to get it replaced, which I have just found out will cost about £300. :(

Gutted! At least you can still go in May and get some cracking shots. It's worth asking them to look first, giving you a free estimate for example.

Hope you manage toi get it sorted soon, because I love seeing your shots on here, there fantastic, nigh on perfect.

Al

i have found that the canon repair centre is a few doors away from a firm I deliver to most weeks.

I dont know whether to take it and get the sensor cleaned professionally first,.......... then have to get the glass replaced when they cant remove the scratches, or..

just get it replaced straight off....(saving the cleaning cost).

maybe you could shift the blame to a heavy handed technician, stand in front of him with a low cut top on so he is not paying full attention to the job in hand :)

I am still waiting for my glue spreaders to arrive, will be very carefull now.

Like I said, I don't see why you would need to tell the insurance company about your camera. Surely you didn't tell them a list of everything else you owned like the TV and the PC.

true...i have to be careful though if I ring up to ask.........then suddenly there is something wrong with my camera!! :D

Hells bells Janice!
I hope it comes good one way or another!
If its insured, I guess you could always say that you dropped it changing lenses, dirt got in the open front and thats how it got damaged?
I doubt that they would have a camera specialist on hand to check?
Or get a quote / inspection, if you have to pay, I am sure a decent camera shop would tell you
whether it wanted cleaning or a new sensor?
BTW the low cut dress is also a good standby ;)

Hmmm all that thru insurance means I will have to tell my husband that Ive made a ***-up AGAIN....so Id rather not do that.

Anyway the insurance company are supposed to be paying us for a new carpet where the dog ran past the iron and caught the cord and brought it down in the middle of the lounge carpet and melted it!

They havent sent anyone round.........neither have we heard a word for about 6 weeks about it.

not a good time to be claiming again I dont think. :(

Looks like it is the low cut top/dress option then. I'll come up and do that for you if you like, I'm sure the sight of me in a low cut top/dress would scare the **** outta the camera guy. They'd do it for nowt then

so it would me in one!! :D

He'd throw me a new camera and say..... get outta here...I cant take any more!! :D

Actually....seeing as there is nothing else but to replace the glass, like Robert said, I might as well see what else I can do.

Is there anything that could be on there that Eclipse wouldnt be removing?

ie grease etc. is there anything else I could do it with, a couple of drops of parafin on a pecpad or something?

Oi! Janice watch that Shorn.... Just seen his image of Monkeh on the Unofficial Monkeh thread. That is so cruel Shorn  :nono: poor Janice needs our sympathy at a time like this.

That is a mighty spotty looking sensor there. :gag: It's still possible that what you can see are in fact fine hairs.

But what I'm interested in is this. Janice you said you used PecPads. Now I know some people say they use PecPads when the mean Sensor swabs. Did you mean you used those clean room 'swabs on a stick' things and not those packs that are marked as PecPads?

Ah ok...i used the ones which are already made up. and Eclipse fluid.

I use high grade microfibre cloths and what is essentially pure alcohol to clean the sensor cover on m leaf back.

A little while ago I had something stuck on there that I couldn't shift. I was pretty sure that it was going back to Israel for a new glass but when I spoke to Calumets leaf people, they said just give it a really good scrub with a dry cloth and then a wipe with the fluid.

Since then I've been quite brutal with the canon at times too and I'd stil be really really surprised if you've caused actual damage.

I've heard so many people convinced that they've destroyed a sensor but I've yet to actually see it.

I REALLY hope this isn't the first. I agree with those that have said you don't have alot to loose now by getting drastic with it and trying to improve it.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I'm soooooo glad I didn't get on to the net this morning, otherwise i'd have not bothered fiddling with my 20

With the thought that it cannot get worse, I have finally used a sigma microfibre cloth and eclipse in the end...just on those 3 scratches and rubbed them.... but those 3 "scratches" in the centre stay put.

Cant see how they could possibly stay there after that if they were hairs.

Completely buggered it up now anyway....trying to get those 3 off............so it's sell up the 4 week-old Sigma 10-20 and battery grip, and off to Canon repair centre.

I'd also be surprised if its a scratch, and not just some really stubborn marks.
I did alot of reading on sensor cleaning when I bought my pecapds and eclipse last year, and I don't remember coming across anyone saying they ended up scratching their sensor (or the glass that covers it).

Look at this then:

and then tell me that I havent scratched the glass now!! :D

 if you need or want to borrow my 10d for the upcoming wedding you are more than welcome janice .. hope you get it sorted..

Thank you Dave...you're very kind. I think I will just have to bite the bullet and get it sorted as soon as I can.

I can sell a few bits and get it repaired and have a good camera, and that's the bit to have working right.

Do any of you think I should still go for the £50 sensor clean first though?

Or not waste the money?

If you are heading down the M11 anytime I'll have a go at cleaning it for you. Don't think I could make it any worse now!

Doubt that they will do that....I bet they will do whatever will bring them most money........ie, try the clean then say, oh it didnt work we'd better replace it.

I'd go for the clean I think. I'd rather risk paying 50 too much than 300 too much. if that makes sense.

Thank you Robert, hope you have enough sandpaper to wrap round your glue spreader! :D

Janice,

hope it works out and it's only a smear on the glass. I haven't been brave enough to clean my sensor yet, so was searching and found www.ajpurdy.co.uk in Harlow, Essex doing a 'clean' for half price at £25 if you join their imaging club for free.
As they are looking to increase their customer base and are potentially experienced sensor cleaners (one presumes), they might be able to give you an independent prognosis!
Jas

they are near me yes....i looked at their site earlier and saw that! thanks!

I've not used them for sensor cleaning, but have bought a lot of my kit from ajpurdy. On that front, they've been excellent, and always very helpful over the phone.

Mark

Yes...think I might try them...they are literally 12 miles from home and about 5 from work, and I think theyd actually tell me if they thought it was buggered before extracting £25 or £50 from me like Canon might.

Just checked the monkey thread

(sorry)

Just PM me if you want me to decorate it some more

thank you robert. I suppose the ideal order of things would be you, purdy, canon.

Could you do some scratches in the shape of stars do you think??? :D

Just to show how my wedding shots will look in August if I dont get it sorted!!!! No levels at all on either shot. The thin white bit is a cobweb!
