Sarah's 52 for 2010 - Now continued in part 2

Stop beating yourself up Sarah, you have nothing to worry about... :)

Cemetries are in a strange way interesting places to photograph.
Sorry you couldn't get the shot you wanted but it still works for me, if just a tad dark.

The lemons is clever idea, like this one lots. (food for thought) an alternative, the lemon on the white BG, invert the lemon only. Does that make sense.

looking forward to you week 4

I think the location you've picked for week 3 is perfect. I can see what you were doing with the shot, I do like it, but perhaps it's a little too close a crop, for me anyway.

Recognising and admitting where you believe you've gone wrong is absolutely the best thing to do, we can only learn from our mistakes, so the more we make, the more we learn :D:D that's my theory anyway! Good luck with week 4, looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)

I like the lemon shots - both are appealing!

I've got to ask been a noob ( and it may be some thing I'd have a go at too ) how did you do the jigsaw ? Just very clever to me....

Terran

I like to think I'm not a noob (but sometimes I'm not so sure :cuckoo:) I'd like to know about the jigsaw too.

I think all that's needed to be said about this week has been said. I'm looking forward to week 4 sarah.

The jigsaw pic is a winner.

I think most of what needs to said has been by others but seeing as I'm here (;) ) I struggled to see what was going on in your submission, perhaps a wider crop? Then again, me being me the fact I struggled kept me engaged in the picture for a few minutes once I'd cottoned on, so YAY you, you held my attention :D

I prefer the first alternative shot. Sorry :(
The first one is too dark, if you maybe lightened the B+W or something it'd be better, for me, but it's hard to see much in the pic, esp detail. Sorry. Maybe also a wider crop.

The jigsaw effect is realy clever

I apologise in advance if I don't get to your thread every week, it's SO hard finding it amongst all the other 52s and 365s. I've even lost mine

Hi Sarah - Well I think you've got loads out of this week (even if it's not what you planned!)

You will never run out of battery again - and at least it's somewhere you can revisit. My flat-on-face (and battery!) moment happened when I couldn't go back and reshoot! :bonk:

You have probably found a theme/topic for your Personal Project.

You've learned how to use the jigsaw thingy (it looks fun!) :)

You'll almost certainly develop the black/white lemons idea at some point - I think it's the sort of shot which could go a long way.

Now - Street - that should be fun.  :)

Jean

Hi Sarah or should I just call you the "Comment Monster"? :)

Shame about the battery on the cemetary shot. I think your self crit is spot on, and would have liked to have seen more of the subject. Graveyards are a favourite haunt of mine with a camera. "Life chopped short" is a very well thought out idea.

Having said that, the yin/yang lemons are excellent. Powerful imagery simplistically laid out with good lighting. Great stuff - and I don't see any PS issues at all.

The jigsaw is not really my cup of tea, but it's a nice idea.

On to week 4!

Ian.

Well Sarah, they say we learn something every day, yours was a camera(digital) is useless without power:D As regards the lemons I think they're ace.....Mick

I agree with Jean that you've not had the best week but you've learnt a lot, even if it wasn't exactly what you intended ;)

I had a few themes last year where I didn't get what I wanted for various reasons (it was often because of one of Jean's learning points; leaving it until the last minute :() so don't let it get you down

Woah someones famous. To many posts to read so im sorry if its all been said above.

Week 3- We all have off days/weeks and you have to accept that, and go out the next week and try twice as hard :D

The image for week 3 is a bit dull for me tbh as i expected something a bit more striking from you, Still you managed to get an acceptable image in on time so thats the main thing :P

I think your ideas for the theme were brilliant, just a shame you couldnt capture them the way you wanted to.

Looking forward to seeing what you have for 'STREET'

Good luck

 Done it again and lost my own thread in amongst all of these, so thank you to everyone who replied and sorry for being so slow in thanking you.

I like the lemon shot Sarah. Very sharp and the black and white backgrounds are a great contrast against the yellow.

I struggled to workout the focus point of your shot from the cemetry whilst appreciating what you were trying to do. The theme has been so difficult, been really interesting to see what ideas people have in trying to stay clear of the chopping board... I partially failed!!

Like the image you have shown from your previous cemetry visit. The PP is really cool (what are the yellow lights in the sky?).

Roll on week 4, unless its grunge we'll all be relieved

Well done,

Dan

Awww thanks Dan. It looks like it was a tough week for most of us.
And I'm just relieved that it wasn't grunge for next week.
The image was for the film titles theme for POTY. I chose "Anges & Demons" and just drew in those yellow fireball thingies.

SarahLee just stumbled across your week2 shot, its awesome Lovely original and some very clever processing.

Thank you.

I like the lemon shot's especially the jigsaw one (I'll have to find a jigsaw "frame" for Photoshop to have a mess with at some point).

I like the cemetary shot but it doesn't really say chopped to me probably because you ran out of battery, it looks like an interesting cemetary though the statues remind me of a scene in Interview With A Vampire :) it's also very Buffy-ish!

Yep. It's a fantastic place to go and shoot.
They've actually used it for a few Doctor Who episodes. . . very atmmospheric.

I liked the lemon shots - it works and sometimes thats enough.

Dont beat yourself up, your shots are great - personally I thought CHOPPED was easier topic than POETRY, but as I have yet to complete mine, the less said the better ;)

Fruit and Veg were an obvious choice sure, but its what you do with them - one user here (sorry I forget which) chopped a cauliflower in half and used a red dye, it looked amazing like a lobotomy photo, its not the subject but how you use and interpret it.

Its good I am getting to understand you a little more, not only from the shots you take but effort you make, keep up the great work ;)

 It's just one of those things . . . there will always be some poor weeks in the 52. I'm just annoyed that this week it was self inflicted!

arrgh.. know how you felt about the battery.. I went to the cliffs of moher late summer, the sky was brooding perfection, lighting spot on.. 3 shots, battery died! :(

I'd like to see more of the cemetary if you do a reshoot.. the one for POTY is great!, something about cemetaries appeals to me..

like lemon with black background and the jigsaw effect.. will have to try that out sometime!

Thank Mich. Glad I'm not the only one who's done the battery thing
I bet it's th kind of mistake that you only make once though.

Stop beating yourself up Sarah, you have nothing to worry about... :)

Thanks Graham. That's very kind of you.

Thank you Louise.
And that is definitely one mistake that I won't make again!

I like the lemon shots - both are appealing!

Thanks !

I've got to ask been a noob ( and it may be some thing I'd have a go at too ) how did you do the jigsaw ? Just very clever to me....

Terran

Hi Terran,
the jigsaw is a standard texture that comes with Photoshop.
If you Google "Jigsaw texture effect Photoshop", there are loads of online tutorials that show you how to use it - and far better than I could explain too.

I like to think I'm not a noob (but sometimes I'm not so sure ) I'd like to know about the jigsaw too.

I think all that's needed to be said about this week has been said. I'm looking forward to week 4 sarah.

Thanks Neil.
And see my reply to Terran above re: the jigsaw effect.

Thanks Rob.
And very kind of you on the first shot. You're absolutely right that the crop is way too tight - but that's the beauty of hindsight . . . and of having some more bettery life in the camera

I prefer the first alternative shot. Sorry
The first one is too dark, if you maybe lightened the B+W or something it'd be better, for me, but it's hard to see much in the pic, esp detail. Sorry. Maybe also a wider crop.

 Don't worry. I've lost track of my OWN thread this week too. How sad is that?
And yeah. The first one really isn't great, but I just didn't want to do the obvious. But if it's one thing I learnt from last year's 52 is that some week's will be better than others!

Hi Sarah - Well I think you've got loads out of this week (even if it's not what you planned!)

Wow Jean! You certainly know how to put a positive slant on things and your lessons learnt are better than mine!
I guess the week wasn't a total write off, but still frustrating when you don't get what you want.

Hi Sarah or should I just call you the "Comment Monster"? :)

Hi Ian.
No not "Comment Monster", either plain "gobby" or "addicted" will do ;)
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I knew the jigsaw would be a bit marmite, so no worries there.
There are a few things from this week that I do want to develop further though - the yin/yang piece being one of them.!

Hi Sarah i lilke the naritive of the cemetery, quite poignant. Hazaa! a jigsaw filter i will have to seek that out.

Thanks Martin.

Well Sarah, they say we learn something every day, yours was a camera(digital) is useless without power:D As regards the lemons I think they're ace.....Mick

Thank you Mick.
And I definitely did learn that lesson this week.

I had a few of these weeks last year. The reason that this one is so frustrating though is that it was self inflicted.

Thank you Stephen and thank you for the kind comments.
I guess it was just one of those weeks.
Let's hope that "Street" is better!

Bad luck on the cemetery visit but at least you can go back to it, and you'll never go out with a dud battery again!

I like both the lemon shots, though - the jigsaw one is a lot of fun.

Love the Lemons Sarah, shame about the cemetry, I'm afraid that shot doesn't really say chopped. Although it looks like the second one you posted, there's a lot of oppo there.

It's a shame about your flat battery probs cos I reckon you would have produced something good, as usual.

I'm not too keen on the cemetary shot - Despite the block having detail on it, it fills too much of the image for my liking.

The lemons, despite being the obvious fall back to food that you were trying to avoid, look good. I get that you wanted to show the black and the white backgrounds together as 'chopped' pictures, but I think the black background side would look stunning on its own.

As for the jigsaw - hmmm, makes me see how much I have to learn.

I think it's time to draw a line under week 3 though, and move onto week 4. I'll definitely be happy to forget about chopped.

 I'm really not keen on "street photography" . . . it's not about not wanting to talk to people, in fact I usually get loads of people talking to me anyway when I'm out with the camera . . . or not with the camera for that matter  I guess I have one of those approachable faces.

Nope, as a concept, taking shots of strangers just doesn't appeal to me very much.

Having said that I really wanted to get outside and do something this weekend after my failed attempt last Saturday. I also wanted a play with the IR filter that I got for Christmas.

So here you have it. One of my first ever attempt at IR photography . . . it may not be perfect but I like it because it is my first attempt. Lesson learnt - it's very hard to compose a shot with the IR filter on - basically it's point and hope for the best because you can't see anything

As much as I liked the tree-lined street, it was a little bit dull as a photo in its own right. Just couldn't resist adding a ghostly figure to it . . . scanned from an old wedding photo.

Week 4 - Street

Ach I give up!
Brilliant work there.
I have never tried IR but I really do like that.
The ghostie sets it off nicely too.

I'm not so keen on this week's entry - sorry
It's beautifully done, and the ghost does make the picture
I'm just not sure I'm getting Street when I look at it
but everyone has a different take on the theme

Beautiful and creepy Sarah, but I love it

My what a learning curve you are on, mastering so many different techniques in such a short space of time. I'm in awe :notworthy:

Sarah,

Good to see you trying something different with the Infra Red.

I do think that the original pic would have been quite interesting without the figure as the lighting looks 'weird' because of the IR.

Personally I'm not at all sure about the addition of the ghost. While it adds a focal point to the shot it has a slightly stuck on look with the lighting being so different from the IR effect on the rest of the shot.

For me it takes away a bit from the strangeness of the IR lighting/mood as you end up looking at the ghost rather than the trees/lighting.

Thank you!

That's just beautiful.

Nuff said.

Rob

Awww thanks Rob.

Thank you Charlie.
I think I'm hooked on this IR photography . . . really want to try it out on some other stuff now.

 There's a street in it isn't there?
No problem Mike . . . and thanks for the honesty.
Glad that you like it as a shot even if it's not quite "street" enough for you.

That's by far your best picture yet. As mentioned above I'm not sure it's screaming 'street' to me, but as a work of art it really ticks my boxes

 Thanks Nick.
I really wasn't too sure about it myself, but I'm doing this to learn and I'd prefer to post an "OK" shot that taught me something new than a "brilliant" shot from within my comfort zone.
I'm so pleased that you really like it.

Beautiful and creepy Sarah, but I love it

My what a learning curve you are on, mastering so many different techniques in such a short space of time. I'm in awe :notworthy:

Thank you Jill . . . that really means a lot to me.
This is all about learning, so I'm glad that I'm on the right track.

Sarah,

Good to see you trying something different with the Infra Red.

That's a fair point Ian - I'll post up the original for you to have a look at (minus ghostie)
I did like the feel of the original and it did say "street" more than the edited one . . . I just felt like it needed some sort of focal point.
Let me know what you think.

Just for you Ian ;)

Actually I would be interested in opinions on this. I didn't think that this had a strong enough focal point, which is why I added the ghost . . . but I'd like to know what everyone else thinks.

or maybe with the ghost smaller and less prominent ?
I think that this is actually the version that I like best

I really like the tree lined road street and think it would have stood up on its own as an image. The ghostly bride is an interesting addition and I actually quite like it. The IR makes it all rather otherworldly and very different.

It certainly does work without the ghost, but I think now I've seen it I prefer her in it :)

Very surreal. The ghost really makes the shot, looks a bit bland without. Just love the ideas you keep coming up with.

I like the idea of the ghost for a focal point but would like to see it smaller/futher away, about half way down your street:D avenue ;)(a straight road with a line of trees or large shrubs running along each side)

Hmm....I think I might have been wrong about that. They are 2 very different pictures with and without the ghost.

The ghost covers up the white post on the original which is a bit distracting and provides a focal point in a negative way on the original.

My vote goes to #1 Sarah, I think the image has enough about it without the ghost. I like the way the street draws ones eye into the image with its vanishing/infinity point. Iain

I really like it both with and without the ghost! I've got an IR filter, stuff I've learnt from it - compose & focus the shot before putting the filter on, then switch to manual focus and pop the filter on. That sorts out the focus & composition in one hit & then you should only have to worrk about the exposure & white balance.
White balance is easy, put the filter on and take a long exposure of a patch of grass which, obviously would be white in any IR photos. Then set that image as a custom white balance.

Sorry if you already knew that lot, but I thought I'd mention it anyway as I wish someone had mentioned it to me when I first got my IR filter :P

another superb image there sarah not wanting to sound thick or ought but what is does ir stand for
