Sarah's 52 for 2010 - Now continued in part 2

There's something very '80's Virgin Atlantic' poster about your image (don't worry I know what I mean and it's a good thing). I honestly couldn't offer any crit on it as it's way out of my abilty range. Can I just say I like it, a lot?

Great shot. I also agree with your choice, thanks for posting the others too and your reasoning behind not choosing them.

Congrats on week 1 - looking forward to future shots

There is still much to learn if we keep our eyes and minds open ;)

Nice shots Sarah :) I like the first one best, but I think a square crop might make it even better, like Graham suggested above. Looking forward to seeing your next submission!

Well done Sarah.

I was wondering about the comments on it not being level then I realised you had straightened it

Number 1 for me as well.

Looking forward to the coming weeks.

Sarah thanks for sharing that and I'm even more impressed - just goes to show what can be produced with some imagination and adaptability.

 I really must invest in some proper lighting though. It would save me no end of time.

Hey Sarah *Wave*
I'm liking the sentiment behind the 3rd shot. But yet again your shots are amazing, I love your lighting/set up and backgrounds, just fab!!

Keep it up :D

 Leanne.
Thank you for dropping in and for the lovely comments. I'll be watching your personal project with interest.

Im blown away with that entry Sarah. I love it...Strong Colours, Plenty of Curves and great composition!! Very Inspirational

Wow! Thanks Stephen.
I'm really glad that you like it and thank you so much for the kind comments.

 Don't worry I know what you mean about 80's Virgin Atlantic (showing my age now)
And please feel free to say that you like it a lot. I'm really pleased by how many comments I've received on this.

I agree with that! :D

Lovely images Sarah...

High standard to kick off with!

Thank you. I'm hoping to get something better next week, but really depends on what Simon pulls out of the bag.

Great shot. I also agree with your choice, thanks for posting the others too and your reasoning behind not choosing them.

Thank you Dade.
I'm new at this, so I've got loads to learn but you're right I don't think anyone ever really stops learning.

Nice shots Sarah :) I like the first one best, but I think a square crop might make it even better, like Graham suggested above. Looking forward to seeing your next submission!

Thank you!
If I get chance I may go back and try a different crop.

Well done Sarah.

Looking forward to the coming weeks.

Thanks Andy.
(I do aim to confuse!)

same here.. kept reading then looking back at the image thinking there must be summat up with my eyes! ;)

like the second of the glass shots, but the 1st one just edges it for me.. 3 cracking photos though!

Off to a great start there Sarah with 3 offerings. Whilst the hair and the colours are very good, and it fits the theme, I think I prefer your first offering. Lots of different curves to look at.

3 very good shots to choose from there, I think the one you have chosen is a strong image, good colour and very nice reflections.
I look forward to the next 51 shots.

Ooooh, I like those! Number 1 is my favourite though, love the wavy reflection. I really like this style of shot, but I've never been able to light it correctly, so thanks for writing a bit about that too

Of the first two I prefer number 1. My eye keeps getting drawn to the red in the bottom of the glass in 2 more than it does in 1. Love them all though.

Sarah, both your shots are superb. I think the first one just edges it but it was a difficult choice. Looks forward to the rest of your 52.

really like the shot you chose, although I'm not sure why but I like no2 a little better - I think it's because it's closer so it's more involving - if that makes sense. Like the hair too, agree with Vic who said you should try it darker with a soft spotlight. Great start anyway

Hi Sarah

Great start to your new 52 - with three shots you are spoiling us!!

I like #1 the best - although I'm not sure about the lemon. I love the reflectons though. Nice take on the theme too - not too obvious but actually there are loads of curves in there.

TBH the hair shot isn't doing much for me - it's just not grabbing my attention.

Acetate - that's a great idea ;)

I absolutely love both the wine shots Sarah - really look forward to seeing the rest of your stuff over the year.

Thank you.
I found a random roll of acetate hanging around - left over from the old overhead projector days. I knew I'd find a use for it somewhere.

Thank you. Updated the title on the irst one now to try to avoid future confusion.

Thanks John.
First one was definitely my favourite - I think you have the advantage of seeing it with a bit of a straighten and hosted away from photobucket, so you're seeing closer to what I had on my screen.

3 very good shots to choose from there, I think the one you have chosen is a strong image, good colour and very nice reflections.
I look forward to the next 51 shots.

Thanks

Liking shot 1 - its the black, red and yellow contrasting that does it for me.

Terran

Thank you

My favorite is no1 looking forward too seeing more over the next 51 weeks

Thank you.
As I said to John, in coming along a bit later I've straightened it now and hosted it away from Photobucket - so I think that helps.

Ooooh, I like those! Number 1 is my favourite though, love the wavy reflection. I really like this style of shot, but I've never been able to light it correctly, so thanks for writing a bit about that too

Thank you Chris. Be interesting to see your take on something similar later in the 52.

Of the first two I prefer number 1. My eye keeps getting drawn to the red in the bottom of the glass in 2 more than it does in 1. Love them all though.

Thanks.
That red reflection in the bottom of the glass was a bit annoying. Should probably have cloned it out . . . but oh well

Sarah, both your shots are superb. I think the first one just edges it but it was a difficult choice. Looks forward to the rest of your 52.

Thank you. Very kind of you to say so.

Thanks. If we get another suitable theme I might try something else similar to the hair, taking that advice on board.

Hi Fi.
Thanks for dropping in. Have you started your personal project yet? I've been looking out for it, but with so many threads in here now

I agree with you on the hair. That was the reason I turned it down for this week's final shot.

Not started yet - have been a bit scuppered by the snow and havn't managed to get out and about with the camera. Absolutely knackered from walking to work and back again as welland havn't got much energy for anything else!! Must get started though - will set some things up indoors if I can get some inspiration going. I have a feeling it is going to be more difficult to keep going with a project that doesn't have set deadlines like the 52.

The intention is there but the sofa and box of maltesers is much more enticing right now!

You've got your work cut out commenting on all these 52 threads this year - thats a pretty mammouth task in itself

Somehow just managed to stumble into your thread now Sarah, after you giving me such good feedback.

I agree with your choice to go with the first image. I think it is a really strong image, could really see it being used as a stock image.
I really like the lighting,I feel number 2 is a bit bright (well its not to bright) - Think what im trying to say is I like that number one is perhaps a touch on the dark side, as it creates a real mood about the shot.

The reds work really well against the black backdrop, and again I think this is enhanched by the glass not being to dominant.

You have set it out really well and I love the rippled reflection on the black beneath. Im guessing this was PP? Or am I wrong and it was on a reflective surface?

All in all, great first entry, and I will look forward to returning for week 2 :D

I'm still thinking about a personal project too, but thinking's all I'm doing right now. I'm with you on the sofa and maltesers I'm afraid!

The early theme this week (and not going into work because of snow today) has been nice. Lots of time to browse through the 52s and comment on most of them.
From week 2 though, I think it's going to be an impossible task to comment on all (or even the majority) of them
I can't believe how many people have joined this year!

Don't worry about not commenting sooner - or even not commenting at all in future weeks. With the number of 52s this year nobody's going to be able to get around all of them every week.

The reflection was actually a sheet of acetate placed over the fabric in the foreground - so no PP at all ;)

Yeh there is a fair volume of them! I cant comment for last year as iv only been here 3 weeks. However, you may find numbers will drop a few weeks in. Hope not though!

Ahhh.... thats awesome! Really nice piece of photography there. I would of put money on that being shopped! Will have to try that out for myself at some point, really nice result you get from it!

I look forward to seeing your efforts in the coming weeks

As I've only just posted my own submission I'm only now getting round to viewing these (seems everyone else has beaten me to it).

Just have to say it's a beautiful, clean shot. Those reflections are amazing and I look forward to following you through the year

Excellent Sarah! I love the reflections you've captured. Already looking forward to your next shot

Having just started my own 52, I'm now looking at all the others before week 2 starts to come out the bag in the threads.

This is the kind of shot I'd love to try and having read how simple your set-up was, I'm now tempted to go shopping (OH will probably have a moan at me though as he's having to be chauffeur until my knee is fixed).

Having missed the slightly skewed version, I have to say the only thing I dislike about your shot is the blob under the right hand cherry as it looks like it is stuck on, whereas the left hand one has the reflection just right.

It's a fantastic start to your project and long may it continue!

Typical of the quality I've come to expect from you, Sarah - well done!:clap:

I like the first one best, though would prefer just a bit more light on it as in no.2. The third one is a very close contender, too. And thanks for sharing the set-up.

I love the photo, looks like something you might see in a magazine for an advertising shot. What magazine and what it would be advertising I don't know but yeah. I think the one you chose is my favourite, really has something.

The only thing I probably would have changed was to change the slice of lime for a slice of lemon. Just think yellow would be a more striking colour against the red. Do love the thinness of it though, showing the veins and mini-segments. I probably would have made it thick to show the colour but think your way is better.

Shame you didn't have access to glass or crystal instead of plastic, but still.

Big thumbs up!

I like 1 & 2 a lot. Considering you've been using a DSLR for only 4 months you've done very good job. Not much I would change, for me the first one just needs a tiny bit more impact somehow, the second one delivers this but I prefer the composition in the first. Both are great though.

Hi Sarah,
all of them are nice shots but number #1 works better for me, would have been nice to see the same shot with little bit more light.
Looking forward to see your work through the year.

Hi Sarah and Happy New Year to you

#1 is the shot for me. Definitely should be a stock photo :clap:

And I love your Heath Robinson approach to lighting

That's something we've got in common

Great start, and I'm doing my usual posting on a Sunday :D

Now where's yours? have I missed it (quite possible with the number on here) ?

Hope your knees better soon and I hope you do try something like this - I'd like to see it.
That one reflection does look a bit odd doesn't it? The acetate that I used was from a roll so it wasn't totally flat when I opened it out. It worked to give a nice curvey reflection but I think that's also the reason for that one blobby looking cherry

I think you're the first on to notice that it's a lime not a lemon - I was hoping I'd got away with it because there were no lemons in the house.
I was quite pleasantly surprised how well the veins came out actually, and I really wish that I'd used that as the point of focus to get it a bit sharper rather than the glass.

Off to a start that I'm reasonably happy with, let's see where it goes from here.

Hi Sarah,
all of them are nice shots but number #1 works better for me, would have been nice to see the same shot with little bit more light.
Looking forward to see your work through the year.

Thanks Rosario.
I did try a bit of brightening, but it took some of the impact away from the black background. Something to bear in mind next time I di a shot like this.

Great start, and I'm doing my usual posting on a Sunday :D

Thanks Jill. I'll probably be back to my Sunday posts from next week. It was nice to have a bit of a head start with the first one though.

Ah nice 3 shots Sarah...hard to chose a winner for me but after several peers I reckon my fave is the 2nd shot - it tells the same 'story' as the first but just fills the frame that much better for my tastes :) And you retain the delicious curves of the glasses in it!

All 3 are good but that one edges it for me - a great start :)and I hope no drink was wasted :)

Hi Sarah. I hope you don't think I'm ignoring you. Like you, I don't look at others' threads until I've done my own and somehow in the avalanche of new 52ers this year I 'mislaid' you. What a fantastic respons you've had though - and I still haven't managed to read all through your thread.

So I'm probably treading a well-worn path by saying how much I love your Curved. I definitely think you've chosen the best shot - for the reasons you've given, but #2 does run it a very close second.

I love the slightly understated lighting - and applaud your contribution to the School of Everyday Props. :D

You've set a cracking standard for the year, and I'm so looking forward to your Week 2 shot.

Any progress on the personal project yet? With the great experience of Week 1 behind me - it's both a freedom and a bind not having a given theme. I've decided what to do for my personal Week 2, but not how to compose, stage or light it yet.

Thanks John - and of course no drink was wasted. Well not alcohol anyway. It was just cranberry juice in those glasses, I can think of better uses for alcohol than spilling it!

Sorry i am abit late in reply to your week one's. I think #1 of the 3 for me, Great compostion of the glasses makes this one stand out more than the others, but all 3 good photos.

Well done looking forward to your week 2 image

Thanks Jack.
And please don't worry about being late. There are far too many 52s on here to keep up with them all.

Hi Jean
And thanks!

Of course I don't think you're ignoring me.
I've just come on to update week 2 and I struggled to find my own thread in amongst all of these!!!

I'm still struggling for inspiration on the personal project. Been a bust couple of weeks and I think I need somebody to give me a good kick to get me going on it
