Decided that I needed a project to force me to both get out shooting more, and get a wider variety of subjects, so seeing the new 52 starting, figured I'd join in.

I intend to make the link to the weekly topic both tenuous and humourous, if possible and appropriate, and give a little back story behind each photo. So let's get started.

Week 1 - Accommodation

Wanting to avoid all forms of human habitat, I was out and about looking for animals in their homes. I got a few good shots of this rather smug and self-satisfied sheep and realised what he was trying to tell me with his cocky walk...

"Accommodation? I don't need no stinking accommodation - I'm a sheep!"

That is brilliant Ray, and made me chuckle

Indeed the sheep does look rather smug, especially considering that it looks like the other sheep in the background looks like it is bowing down to him :D

A very sharp image, well done.

I look forward to seeing the rest of your 52 this year.

Good luck

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks. Hopefully I have the stamina for the other 51. :)

And I think you're right - all the other sheep know their place when the boss is around!

Week 2 - New

Well I'm currently without camera and can't put this off any longer, so let's see what we can make happen with my phone. Hopefully the link to the theme is reasonably obvious...!

Hi Ray, a good start to the year so far. Your link to this weeks theme is far more direct than mine!

It's good to see you dusted before shooting. There's a little bit of light creeping in on the right, but other than that it's a good shot.

That sheep is a great shot especially with the smug look and necklace (ID tag)!

Thanks. Terrible one this week, but being away from home and my camera, it was either this or nothing, and I'm not going to go skipping on the 52 on the 2nd week in. :)

I'm amazed you noticed that I dusted the phone though...

Love the sheep shot - she certainly looks like she thinks she's superior

Also like your original take on the 'new' theme. Hope you wont be without your camera for too long.

Hiya Ray,

I like your idea and photo for the "New" theme :D That phone looks just like the one on my desk at work, but I would have never thought of the idea you came up with so well done.

Well done too for not using an excuse of no camera as a cop-out

Hope you are not too long without your camera and look forward to seeing what idea you come up with for the next theme.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks guys. The smug sheep seems quite popular!

Don't worry about the camera - it's on loan to a friend for a few more days, but in return she has "volunteered" to be my test model for starting off in the world of studio portraits... so in a few weeks I should be popping up in that part of the forum!

Camera returned just in time for Week3 - Style. Being male this immediately filled me with a sense of dread and fear inspiration, and I already have an idea in mind. Going to try and get something done tomorrow!

Cool! I hope it doesn't have anything to do with Sheila

Sorry, I couldn't resist that one :p

Cheers

Bad news! It turns out that sheep don't co-operate when you try to get them in high heels and shave them to look like a poodle...

Good thing I have a viable plan B!

Good Luck mate... im struggling with style too... have a few ideas but would need a studio I dont have... and some experiance in using one which I dont have either... so need to get my thinking cap on...

Good start with your first two!

Indeed, especially if you pick the wrong one and land up with Shaun the sheep (pardon the pun) instead of Sheila

Glad to hear you have a contingency plan, look forward to seeing your pic.

Cheers

OK, part of my secret plan for the 52 is to hit at least one of three targets each week from:
1 - think outside the box - not to focus on the quality of the shot or the processing, but to force myself into a different way of thinking
2 - improve the technical quality of my photography
3 - try out a new technique, or style of photography

The previous two weeks have both been a 1, this time I've tried for a 3, looking for a "product photography" style of shot, something that I've never tried before. Anyway, onto the photo...

Week 3 - Style

style [stahyl]
–noun
another word for stylus

Discarded PDA technology from the previous decade done in a product shot style, as if from a brochure, showing off their antiquated use of the stylus to use the screen - it's all fingers and thumbs nowadays!

For a first try at this kind of photography, I've got to say that I'm very pleased with the result, but contructive criticism is very welcome.

Ray, for such a quick upload i like your speed of thought, sticking with the theme yet a slant on it like this..is good. i guess the geek in me focused too much on the PDAs than you actual photography..shame on me..but balanced lighting and composition make a pleasant product shot.

wow that was quick!
Really like it. What have you laid the PDAs on?
Thanks.
They were laid on a mirror to get the reflections I wanted. the background was then added in in PP.

The idea came to mind pretty quickly last night, and I guess the implementation must have come to me in my sleep. ;)
Thanks for the comments!

Hiya Ray,

Great take on the theme, and a fab photo too.

Cheers

Wow that was quick, im just about to upload week 2! lol..... Really nice images...

Why im here, how do you change your thread name to week 1, then 2, then 3 etc, im lost?:suspect:

I used to have one of them iPaq's...
I really liked it!
still, it did nothing my desire doesn't do now...
Aye, it was great for its time and I only stopped using it a year or so ago - it was a great TV/sky remote!

Thanks for the great comments everyone, it's good to know that the effort I put into it paid off.

This is the great thing about the 52 for me - trying things that I wouldn't have otherwise tried.

Week 2 - New

Nice take on the subject. Only one missed call, you can't be very popular..:exit:

Hi Ray,

I love the way you thought outside of the box on the Accommodation theme! Very nice :). Is that a Cisco IP phone I see in New? :). I think it is awesome that you submitted a photo. Far better to do that with a camera phone than to skip a week. I really like Style. You were really quick off the mark with that one :). I have no clue how one does product photography but your shot looks extremely professional to me. I love the reflections. By the way I own several of those devices myself lol.

Better something than nothing as they say. It's the general idea that I would have went with anyway, just implemented far poorer way. I'm not going to cheat and re-shoot, but if it's ever applicable to another theme, I might well retry it.

I don't really have much of a clue either, it being my first attempt, but it went far better than I expected! (And glad to hear you have good taste in PDA/phones )

Week 4 - Open

Oh man a bit late here... isn't life hectic at times! Catching up, though.

Anyway, was playing around with lighting for this week. Rear lit with a single flash with the on-camera flash putting out just enough to fill in front details.
Processing was just the b&w conversion, tweaked levels, and cleared up some dust.

Good lessons and practice in off-camera flash.

Week 5 - Hard (Water)

I had the idea, but it was surprisingly "hard" to find a suitable tap that had been affected by hard water (likescale deposits aka calcium carbonate).

As a side note, it's hard to not feel suspicious when taking photos in a toilet other than your own...

Already got something in mind for week 6 - and this one will be on time. :)

Hiya Ray,

Well done for getting up to date with the weeks.

What a co-incidence that week 4 and 5 both have to do with water :D

Week 4: Like this one, especially the way the light seems to mimic the shape of the bottle. A nice sharp image and good control of lighting. Especially like the way the shadow at the bottom forms a V. Lovely DOF too. What did you use as the base? it looks very interesting texture.

Week 5: Wow, I love this one. It was one of the ideas I had, but also couldn't find a tap with hard water. Well done on the find, even though like you say was hard to find, and well done for being brave enough to take a camera with you into a public loo (or at least I think that is where you were). My only crit would be the harsh light on the tile in the background, otherwise I think it is a fab image.

Looking forward to seeing your week 6 photo.

Cheers

Dawn :)
