Ray's 52/2011 - Week 11 - "Knowledge" added

Well done on catching up!, Like those 2 a lot. Lighting is great on week 4, and week 5 is brilliant.
Hiya Ray,
Well done for getting up to date with the weeks.
What a co-incidence that week 4 and 5 both have to do with water :D
Thanks! At least I see I'm not the only one doing the catchup game this week - I think there's about 4 of us.
Hadn't realised they were both water themed, a bit obvious to miss that though!
Week 4: Like this one, especially the way the light seems to mimic the shape of the bottle. A nice sharp image and good control of lighting. Especially like the way the shadow at the bottom forms a V. Lovely DOF too. What did you use as the base? it looks very interesting texture.
That was the plan to get a halo-type effect around the bottle with the light. Took a while, tweaking the position and setup of bottle, light, and camera, but I'm happy with the result.
The bottle's actually sitting on nothing more than your bog standard fake-wood effect office desk. The low lighting angle just highlighted the fake wood grain effect!

Week 5: Wow, I love this one. It was one of the ideas I had, but also couldn't find a tap with hard water. Well done on the find, even though like you say was hard to find, and well done for being brave enough to take a camera with you into a public loo (or at least I think that is where you were). My only crit would be the harsh light on the tile in the background, otherwise I think it is a fab image.
Thanks, I'm surprised at how well it came out, I thought I'd be re-shooting a different subject. That said, the reflection hadn't bothered me until now - thanks for that.

Open: I love this lighting so much that I want to have a go at something like this myself now. Do you just fire a flash at the table behind the bottle? Fantastic shot that wouldn't be out of place as an advert in a magazine!

Hard: great take on the theme. I totally did not think of that! The colours have come out great on the tap - crop seems a bit tight on the top of the tap.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

Yup the flash was just off the top of the shot, sat directly on the desk aiming straight forward. Can't remember what zoom setting I ended up on though - but half the fun is in the experimentation. Would be good to see what you end up with on a similar setup.

The tap was tricky to frame (a lot of "ewww I don't want THAT in there"). you may be right, maybe double the tap-to-top distance, but not more than that.

Hi Ray,

Love the lighting on the water bottle, super shot.

Tap - When did you go into my bathroom  - I like the composition of this one, you have captured it well.

Simon.

I really like your 'open' shot, really looks refreshing and crisp, and the b&W works really well.

'Hard' now that's my kind of tap, it has real character!

Some water coming out would really add the finishing touch and, a minor point, but I like to see the shadow to the right of the tap removed.

Cheers.

So I find myself two weeks behind again! :'(
I had a few hours free last Sunday and got some pretty decent shots for week 6 and 7, but can't find the flippin' SD card :bonk: ... so went out tonight to start over, AND add week 8 to the list. Disaster. Well, I certainly found a disaster and lucked into a something for week 8. With my week 6 photo recreated, that just leaves me with week 7 to catch up on, hopefully in the next few days.... go me!

Anyway, less chat more snaps.

Week 6 - Clutter

After 3 weeks inside, I figured it was time to brave the British weather once again. No other comments on this picture other than that it is a comment on the "cluttered" state of our roadsides - no technical challenges as previous weeks, just focus on the subject matter.

Week 7 - Delicate

Being a bit cheeky here and using my joker to let me catch up... this is a cose up of a dandilion from last year.

Naughty me, and back to fresh pictures from now on...

Week 8 - Chaos

As someone far smarmier than me once said, "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." Carry your camera with you at all times - you never know when a good photo opportunity will come up - such as on your daily commute.

Anyway, this is a taste of the road chaos caused by traffic accidents - especially those of HGVs.

Fear not, nobody was injured. At least not today - it's a general accident hotspot.

Hi Ray

great idea for Clutter but makes my blood boil that people just dump stuff:bang: Like the angle & the neatness of the field to the left ,great shot

Nice idea for Chaos (I'm still thinking bout what I'm gonna do !) & works perfectly for the theme . Right place , right time & having your camera to hand

Go prepared and you might find your own chaos!

Hiya Ray,

You have done a good job with your catchup, now I have to catchup on your pics :D

Week 6: It just p's me off to see how people dispose of their rubbish like that :bat: to those who have jumped their rubbish to clutter up our countryside/roadsides. Anyhooo, sorry about the rant, and back to your photo .... I think you have got a great shot there to document the evidence. Perhaps send that into a local paper, I'm sure they would have a story for it.

Week 7: When I first saw the photo before reading your storyboard for it, I was thinking where the hell do you live that you already have dandilion clocks  A subject that I did a mini project on last year, so I always love looking at these very delicate plants. This is a lovely close up with nice DOF and fine detail.

Week 8: Talk about being in the right place at the wrong time (I hope nobody was injured). Did you jump out of the car to take this shot? as it looks like you are in the ditch. A great shot!

Good set and I look forward to your future weeks.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Since both comments so far have shown anger at the photo, I guess it has done its intended job. Sadly all too much of it around. I do like the little irony of the labelling of the container in the bottom left, though.

Please tell me then that I'm not the only one to find it an incredibly tough shot to get - or maybe I just shouldn't even try on windy days! :D

Nobody injured thankfully. I parked a bit up the road and went back.

Thanks. Overall not half as happy as I was with the previous few weeks. I think I just have a hard time with the messy overgrown and half-dead grass - it's not something I have fun trying to look decent.

Looks like a good piece of parking by the lorry!

You are correct though, the number of times I've been in the car and wished I had my camera with me...

Indeed, job well done. I zoomed into the label on the container you mentioned as I hadn't noticed it  GREEN, my foot!

No, don't worry you are not the only one to find these shots tough, especially when having to contend with the wind. Fortunately, last year I had quite a cultivation of them in my garden (much to my neighbours horror), and at times had to pick a few to get shots of them indoors out of the wind. I may have a few of them growing on the carpet later this year, especially where the seeds became embedded in the carpet  FYI, if you are interested, here is a link to the mini project I did last year http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=230249

Thank goodness nobody was injured in the accident, my heart always sinks when I see such carnage on the roads.

Personally I think you have done well to get these 3 posted and have enjoyed keeping up with the progress of your project.

Keep up the good work.

Hi, Ray, 3 nice one there:

#1, great lead in and nice composition - I agree, if caught they should be forced to clear a mile of the stuff up...
#2, :nono:, cheeky, indeed. Nevertheless, few things are as delicate looking as one of these. Nice composition, I was tempted to say a closer crop would be good, but your take works.
#3, again, I like your composition and I like your processing, nice catch. Small branch/bush lower left is a bit distracting, but with the Police car there, tugging it out may not have been a good idea.

Cheers.

At least he stayed the right way up! :)

Interesting series of photos there, and some fun facts, good work. I wont comment on the thread itself, not being a fan of thread necromancy. :)

1 - if only! Unfortunately the reality is that if caught they're told "get caught 5 more times and we'll have to give you a mild warning "....
2 by closer crop do you mean on the centre of the dandilion? Hadn't considered that. Hm.
3 - the idea was to get a view "through " the path of destruction. Didn't work entirely as intended though.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hi ray.

Loved your Chaos shot... and delecate too. Something really here and now about your chaos shot... it feels alive and there is a feeling of trauma! I think its the lights on the road that do that.

I'd have maybe moved forward in front of the out of focus bush...

Great work

Mark

Thanks.

Getting the right position and angle was tricky. As you say the lights were important for the "chaos" aspect of it, but getting a good angle that got in all the parts of the scene was not easy. I'm just glad that squashed cone was there to at least give me a focal point to work with.

That sodding bush is annoying me more now. OK, so as well as always having the camera in the car, I now need to travel with a hedgetrimmer too.

Ray, I've not come across your 52 yet.

You have some lovely images. The sheep is just gorgeous and your style (product shot) is just first class. All your shots are beautifully exposed and I look forward to seeing more of your 52 in the coming weeks

3 great photos there! Your chaos photo is full of atmosphere, the lights certainly make it.
 Thanks guys. I'm putting a lot of effort into improving my skills through this project, and I'm glad you seem to think it's paying off.

Well worth doing.

Top idea for chaos and nice timing on your part :). Great use of differential focus too. I love the way that the lorry is just sitting in that field. It is so out of place that to me the chaos is more about the strangely out of place lorry which just seems to be driving through the field than the queue of traffic.

Hi Ray,

Really like your photos for Open, Hard and Delicate!

For open, I love the lighting, and DoF on the floor and how the lid is resting perfectly.

For hard, I like how it's such a different take on the theme from others I've seen (not to say others aren't good at all), but I love how it shows proof of hard water.

The detail in your delicate photo is incredible, perfect in all ways IMO.

Chaos, again, a brilliant photo. This was an idea I thought of earlier in the week when thinking about chaos, but knew I would never have the opportunity to photograph it in less than a week! The most chaos I think people get is from the roads!

Will keep an eye on this 52, I've enjoyed looking at your photos.

Will.

Very kind comments there, thanks. There are far better photographers taking part, but with enough practice by week 52 I plan to be a fair bit closer!

I went to take some photos today and what should turn up but my missing week 6 and 7 photos? :bonk:

I figured I might as well post them anyway.

Week 6a - Clutter

Week6 I actually prefer my reshoot. It's the same basic theme, just a different cluttered different roadside. I don't think it hits the theme quite as well, though.

5481774632_892ee9f256_b.jpg

Week 7a - Delicate

I see others also went the snowdropo route, and it's clear why. This time of year you just can't get away from them. :D Deliberately went for a darker image here to hopefully get across their location in the woodland in the darkness of tree cover.
Focus was a bit of a problem, and shooting so low ot the ground on a rainy day the choice was between risking dodgy focus or laying down and turning into a mud monster. If I was to redo it, I'd take something to lay on, and perhaps go for a bigger DOF.
Anyway, at least it's not a cheat recycled photo!

5481774730_d0f437ac91_b.jpg

Seen a few indexes (indices?) about and figured it would be a useful addition to my first post and help me keep track of things. 5 bonus points to whoever did it first!

Fantastic DOF. For some reason my lens doesn't give me much (Nikon D5000 kit lens), so this is something I can only dream of. Well done.

Pick yourself up a 50mm prime, they're great for small dof, and dirt cheap too!

Hi Ray , apologies for not popping in sooner

Beautiful snow drop capture ,caught the dew/rain drops really well , spot on with the whiteness & the dark background, top shot

Thanks! Despite the problems I had taking it, I think it's one of my favorite photos.

Hiya Ray

Well done on finding your week 6 and 7 photos.

6a: Indeed a clutter photo ...... but I still prefer your reshoot pic.

7a: Wow this is beautiful, love everything about it from the composition, colours, DOF, focus and the water drops.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Yup good thing I had to reshoot the clutter pic. Not entirely in love with the new one either, but it's way better.

Thanks for the compliments on the snowdrops. I wasn't happy with it at first due to slightly off focus, but shrinking and sharpening seem to have pretty much covered that up, and as a whole I'm happier with it now.

Week 9 - Finish

So after realising that no dishwasher means no finish dishwasher tablets, I realised that I had to look elsewhere for ideas. Having no ideas, I set my mind free searching for inspiration. Upon realising that I had no inspiration either, I gave up and checked a thesaurus, put one of the words into my satnav, and clicked "go to desination". Finally, like the road, my quest was at an end.
