Natural, of the two I prefer the first... more interest going on, although I have to say, the clean and well defined flame points in the second are good
Age, Both are good, but I think I prefer the first... it has a better representation, to me, of the intended Ice Age, the letters appear to be more afloat in the ice.
Spread, both fulfil the theme well... I'm torn like you I think.. the gritty nature of the mono really does a nice job on the floor, but I think some of the "spread" gets a little lost with the reduced separation. So, for the theme, gonna have to go with the colour.

) The shadows in the color one just let it down it slightly . Great mono conversion , really brings out the texture in the wooden floor...how many people stopped & asked what you were up to ? Just have this image of you hanging over a balcony
