Policeman Wins £430,000 Payout!

Every penny well deserved:)

Looks like the pensioner that was "attacked" got less than 1/4 of the officer who was "ridiculed".

"wins £430,000 payout because he couldn't stand daily ridicule from colleagues"

Driver won payout too, leaving taxpayer with bill above £500,000 for two minute video

Comes down to poor procedures at his Police Force, they appear to have ignored or failed to assist with his mental state and then allowed the leak of the official video from the police car.

Sounds like a "mad compo" story at first glance, but after considering all the facts actually seems justified IMO.

Aye, dafter than a brush.......

...mind you, he does make wooden reindeer now!

My sympathy is with the pensioner.

My sympathy is with the copper, I agree with Brash
The driver was stopped for driving without a seatbelt then drove off while being interviewed and the police then had to chase him
The copper had to break the car window to get the keys so the driver didn't drive off again the video didn't show him in a good light but you can't really tell the true facts from a short clip like that
As far as I can guess without knowing the facts the officer was stitched up by his superiors
Don't know why the driver got compo he was in the wrong the fact that he was a pensioner is not relevant

As I see it,
The pensioner was in the wrong for not wearing a seat belt.
The officer was heavy handed attacking the car with the truncheon.
His peers obviously thought so too, if they were taking the urine.

I wish someone would pay me 400k every time someone took the urine outta me

Look at the photo - the police could have driven around him and stopped him going anywhere. In fact look at the video ......................

The old boy was in the wrong. Pulling up behind the car is standard practice as is smashing the window to get the keys when the diver is trying to evade the police. I assume the copper got ridiculed because of the amount of time it took to smash the window (probably had security film o the inside of the glass).

Blocking a rangie in with a standard car isn't going to be a great idea - the rangie has the weight and power to just push the car out of the way - I can't see anything wrong with smashing the window to get the keys either - the driver was clearly a danger to the public and they need to make sure he doesn't flee again.

The fact that the guy is 70 has no bearing - its no more justifiable for an OAP to drive like a t*** than it is for a 18 year old.

That said the payout does seem a bit high - surely if you are going to be a cop you need to be tough enough to ignore a bit of P'staking

He's got a personalised number plate. That reason alone is justification for attacking the car with a truncheon.

EDIT: They should have put the Benny Hill music on that video.

I don't understand why you'd get anything for driving away whilst stopped and then failing to stop a second time.

But, whilst I think the police responded properly to that situation it does seem a very high payout to the officer involved

OMG! I don't care who is right or wrong.... that payout is nothign short of disgusting ..Its not like he can never work again... what loss? as soon as he is earning they should take it back...

nearly half a million pounds because he couldnt stand the banter...OP is right.. the world has gone mad :(

maybe but the OP didnt post it for a pro-police pat on the back :)

No I didn't. I think their actions were diabolical, over the top and typcal of what some of our police force seems to have become.

Let's be clear about this, it isn't the police who decided to pay him this money, it was the decision of the Employment Tribunal. The police fought the case and lost, so if the compensation award was excessive then it's down to the Employment Tribunal, not the police.

Last year, another Employment Tribunal awarded £20,000 to a female police officer who had transferred to the firearms unit. She was the first female officer to join the unit and she claimed that she was the butt of sexist jokes that offended her and made it impossible for her to continue, and she had to transfer back to her normal police job.

What was the worst thing said to her? Apparently the instructor asked her if she would like a pink gun...
Now, I know quite a few women who shoot and most of them wear pink, safety hats, boots, shooting vests etc., several have pink gun slips and one even has a pink gun:) Sexist jokes, in the very macho world of shooting, are normal and the women give as good as they get, it doesn't seem to offend any of them.

And whatever we may feel about police officers making these inflated claims, the fact of the matter is that the law allows them to do so. If anyone has lost the plot here, it's the Employment Tribunals who fail to throw their cases out.

This.

The fact the driver is a pensioner is irrelevant - he should have stopped and police had every right to do that.

The copper though should grow some balls. This country is full of people who do not take responsibilty and always seek to blame others. A bit of banter is what goes on in most jobs, and I guess in a pressured role like thsi its whats needed to ease the tension.

OAP's shouldn't have big cars like that and most of them shouldn't even be on the road. Scone hunters!!

in fact they just confirmed on radio2 the 430k was to cover lost pension.

and? sorry but its no less of a madness payout.. oh mummy the big boys are making fun of me... well heres half a million quid.. lets call it your pension for being such a brave little soldier..

I shouldn't think the copper involved gives too much of a toss what anyone thinks now.

so if you felt victimised enough to leave your job (for whatever reason), in the current climate where jobs on a similar pay scale are few and far between, would you not expect to be entitled to your pension early?

you asked a general question... this is a actual case i am replying to.. man up, get a transfer or sort it out one way or another... running off like a baby and getting half a million quid is nothing short of disgusting..

from what they were saying earlier he was actually pulled out of doing normal duties following him complaining about getting harassed by collages. sounds like the management/officers above him mis-handled the situation completely. he sued (essentially to get his pension) and won.

Glad policeman got a pay out for a miss management by the police force..but what fecks me off is that the pensioner also sued and got over 55k......just heard this on the radio

When I first read this I thought, "Oh no not another one!" - I still think he clearly wasn't cut out for the police service (you can't really be 'thin-skinned' ... "If you can't take a joke you shouldn't have joined" and all that!) but listening to his MP and Solicitor on the radio it certainly appears that the whole case has been totally mis-handled and the taxpayer is being treated as the sap yet again.

Nobody should have to deal with harassment from work colleagues, irrespective of their job. Calling it "banter" is attempting to justify something that is unacceptable in any workplace.

It is reasonable to expect a police officer to be able to deal with trouble from the public, it is not in any way reasonable to expect them to deal with it from the colleagues that they may have to rely on for support when dealing with the public.

Well I don't know what the world is coming to, if you can't have a laugh and a joke behind closed doors.

"Out there" is why the support and united front is needed and should be, in any public orientated service.

We just seem to be breeding a race of litigates (is that even a word? well it should be :D)

.

That's the most ridiculous loda pish I've heard for ages. You seriously trying to say there should be no banter in the work place and that banter is a way of attempting to justify or disguise harassment. Step into the real world ffs!!!!

theres a fine line between banter and bullying however.

Of course there is but most banter is definitely not harassment nor bullying as inferred up there^^

Only in the modern pampered, pc-correct part of the world in which we live - if a policeman who is empowered to safeguard the community cannot take being the brunt of jokes from his colleagues then he has no place in the job.
Compare this with the report of the young soldier who was raped and then allegedly faced continual aggressive verbal abuse from the Military Police, including the girlfriend of the alleged rapist and the difference should be as clear as chalk and cheese!

"Man up" and "Grow a pair"

Some of you missed your vocations in HR and public welfare!
