Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Anyone else using pny uhs II cards in the om1?
I've had my second one brick now.
I've noticed the pattern though. Shooting stills works perfect but then I shoot video and the camera locks up (turn off and battery out to sort) but then card error and that's it.
I'm going to email olympus about it but I'm wondering what makes of uhs II cards other people are using that haven't got this issue.
.... What is "pny"?

In the OM-1 you need to be using SDHC UHS-II 299 MB/s Write spec cards to avoid buffering and other problems. I can shoot one continuous burst C-AF + Subject Detection etc of as many as 67 frames without even a hiccup and have done this regularly although my usual is a burst of 3-9 frames depending on the subject. I use the Sony TOUGH 64GB but they're not cheap.

OM workspace, which I only use for culling, tells you the number of frames in each burst.

PNY is AFAIK a secondary 'brand' line of memory cards.

Took this yesterday on a local dog-walk. Surprisingly, it made Explore on Flickr. E-M5iii, Panasonic 12-60 f3.5-5.6 lens.

.... That's very nice! And good that it's not spoilt by graffiti painted on their flanks or giant ear tags!

Congrats on Explore! [I can't find applause emojis to post here!]

The sheeps round here don’t go in much for jewellery, but they do like a bit of make-up on their bums!

I once saw a sheep with "Darren was here" written on its side and an arrow pointing to it's ...... erm.....bottom......

I’ve never had an issue with cards locking up.

I once had an issue with a Lexar card - the write protect thing kept sliding across, rendering it unusable. They replaced the card for me. I was impressed with their customer service as I’d had it a while.

^ ^ ^ Shot on the big white 150-400mm zoom. One of my young surfer-girl friends has nicknamed me "BigZoom" or "BigZ" and the name is spreading - I'm happy with that. Stay cool!

I have had this lens nearly 3 years now and shoot with it more than any other lens - It is an absolute joy to use. My 40-150mm F/2.8 PRO is second and 12-40mm F/2.8 PRO is an occasional third.

Excellent shot.
Can I ask your opinion on the 12-40 pro? I’m considering it for my em5 mk3 for the train photography.
This is usually at the station etc rather than out in the field so I’m thinking 40mm should be sufficient. I currently use the Panasonic 14-140mm which is great but I’m interested in trying the Olympus pro lenses.
Many thanks.

.... Hi James, if you scroll down my album on Flickr you'll find quite a few shot on the OM 12-40mm F/2.8 PRO - I publish my camera data :

A zoom is invaluable and the weatherproof advantage is very helpful even on station platforms as some of my wet shots at St Pancras London show. It is also a very compact lens (I come from large D-SLR Canon L gear!) and I often have it in my pocket (or lightweight backpack) while shooting on my 40-150mm F/2.8 PRO which is the other lens I use for railways. I keep wanting to try my big white 150-400mm on railways but it needs particular locations which have distance - I have 2 spots planned on the mainline.

As with any wide-angle lens you have to be very aware of any distortion in the perspective and tilt according to what you want.

Having F/2.8 is often valuable - Particularly if you shoot a lot in British winters! This shot is F/2.8 but has great DoF being a wide-angle lens :

A JAVELIN DEPARTS IN THE RAIN by Robin Procter, on Flickr

Sometimes I wish it was 12-60mm so I wouldn't have to swop to my 40-150mm. Unfortunately the MC-14 and MC-20 cannot be mounted on the 12-40mm. But there is no such thing as the perfect camera or lens [except the big white 150-400mm!].

I hope this helps but do ask me anything else which comes to mind.

EDIT :
I just noticed you use a em5 which I think is smaller than my OM-1. So you may feel the 12-40mm F/2.8 PRO is big but I would be very surprised if you thought it was too big or heavy unless sprinting up mountain sides. The lens is solidly built like all the PRO lenses tend to be. I always have an OM Battery Grip on my OM-1 and personally prefer a bit of weight to hold steady. I have never seen or handled the 12-40mm F/4 alternative so can't comment meaningfully on that lens.

That’s great, thank you very much for the in depth info.
Would you opt for the 12-40 over the 12-45? I thinking yes for the f2.8 vs f4.

I own the 12-40 Pro and it's a terrific lens. Solid and compact and fast focusing. I considered the 12-45 but decided there were no gains other than it being a bit lighter/smaller if I recall.

I wonder if you might consider the 12-100 F/4? Slower of course but if you haven't found the F/3.5-5.6 to be too slow on your Panny lens then you get Pro glass with great IS as well on the Oly. I haven't shot with it but it does get glowing reviews from initial release and long term use.

It might feel a bit heavy on the Em5 MkIII mind you.

If I might butt in - I have changed from the 12-45 f4 to the 12-40 f2.8 on my E-M5 (and E-M1) not because of any real-world difference in quality but rather for the extra f stop. Yes, the 12-45 is lighter, but the 12-40 still balances perfectly - and I'm one who dislikes heavy lenses. The only other lens to consider is the Panasonic Leica 12-60 f2.8/f4, but it quickly drops to f4 at about 14mm. And it's heavier.

Thank you. Yep I think I’m going to go for the 12-40.

.... That is especially nice! Personally I much prefer it to most of your other many Stonechat shots.

So, you are shooting on a M1X now. You like it?

love it robin and thanks to the OM1 the prices have dropped to silly levels to even with warranty added .

I have the original 12-40 f/2.8 Pro. Here is a jpeg SOOC - just downsized for here, taken on my Pen F - smaller than an EM5. (On the PenF, I enjoy using the in camera B&W jpeg and shoot raw at the same time.).

I'd have thought the extra stop would be handy if you are willing to carry the weight.

One thing I love about this lens is that the close focusing distance is around 20cm and it does focus stacking too.

This was at f/2.8 1/100s ISO 80 at 12mm, just so you can see the field of view.
Settings could have been better but I was with my family and they weren't stopping to wait for me :ROFLMAO:

The field of view looks excellent. Thank you for the example.

So thinking about getting a 2nd hand E-M1 mk3.
Would you go for mint one with 4000 shutter count and a 1 year warranty
Or
An Olympus refurbished one, with a few small marks, 300 shutter count and Olympus warranty. £50 cheaper than the 1st one
Just pulled the trigger on a 2000 shutter count mk3 from WEX. Should be here tomorrow

as I said earlier shutter count doesn't mean a thing with these , as a lot of peeps use electronic shutter ,overall condition is the criteria to watch for . thankfully WEX offer a cast iron warranty so well done ,you will love it

Yes. I am actually not even sure what the count is on the mk2 I bought from them in the Autumn. But condition description from them was spot on before and for another lens I bought later. So hoping this will be the same.
The big question is, do I sell the mk2 and get an e-m5 as a throw in the bag walk about or keep it

If my Sony gear sells I'd be interested in the MK2 Richard.

This male Bullfinch would not co-operate to give me a clear shot - this was the best I could do.
It's good to be back in the Olympus fold, and the OM1 seems to be really good (so far!).

Do you really need two E-M1s? Get the E-M5 as a second camera - you’ll be delighted with it.
