FOREVER SEEKING THE NEXT WAVE by Robin Procter, on Flickr

Although there is the option under Picture Style to select Monochrome (on the OM-1 at least), there seems very little point when RAW editors offer so many monochrome presets which each have the ability to be adjusted and fine-tuned to your liking. ON1 even has old school 35mm film and paper types to choose from plus all the filters - A stinky darkroom and old film camera is no longer needed.

I always shoot in colour and occasionally create an additional monochrome version after post-processing but not all individual images suit monochrome in appearance. Occasionally they look better in monochrome (B&W) than in colour, as is the case with this example of a friend surfing.

Shot on OM-1 + 150-400mm TC PRO + Gitzo Monopod

Is anyone interested in buying the 90mm f3.5 macro 2:1 macro lens. How much do you think it will be?

I hate the b******t being pedalled with it the usual 180 mm equivalent is bad enough but saying it is 4:1 is just b******t as this is not an equivalent magnification is a fact.
Ignoring this I am aiming to buy one as long as they haven't done stupid things with it.

Is this what they are announcing on the 8th of Feb?

Looks like it might be Alf . Price will be the overiding factor though . Might even lower the used price of the 60mm as seems the norm of late

B&H have put a placeholder up for the 90mm and, assuming it's in the right place, it look like the price will be almost $1500. I won't be rushing to buy it.....
At that price it's not likely to push the price of the 60mm down.

.... So about £1,200. Personally, that's about the price I would expect it to be in view of its spec. It's likely to be a proper PRO lens. OMDS are clearly intent on producing high quality camera gear and that always comes at a price. A high quality Macro is not usually a budget lens - It isn't where the market is.

Is $1,500, or thereabouts, what is indicated/suggested by B&H?

Its name shows it's an IS Pro lens. When the list of OM/Olympus lenses on B&H is sorted by price it appears between two lenses priced at $1499 and $1399. Scroll down a bit here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/products/Mirrorless-Camera-Lenses/ci/17912/N/4196380428?sort=PRICE_HIGH_TO_LOW&filters=fct_brand_name:eek:lympus|om-system
.... Nice bit of detective work Jonathan!

If the OM Special Announcement on 8th February includes this Macro lens (very likely but not 100% certain) then by now many retailers will most likely be confidentially aware of the price level.

Some photographers here such as Alby @ajophotog are very Macro/Micro orientated but I am much more Macro/Close-up orientated and so achieving distance from my living wildlife subject is important and so the new 90mm (180mm equivalent) Macro lens is not a must-have. I get satisfactory (for me) close-up results with my 40-150mm F/2.8 PRO + MC-20 and even my 150-400mm TC PRO and especially when able to Focus Stack onboard camera.

I’m with Robin on this , macro is not on my priority list. Now a 500mm F4 pro would make me sit up

Two great shot shots Robin, but that second one is fantastic.

Yep she trips up and falls over so much now I think 'that ' conversation is coming with the vet soon
.... Extremely sad as it is, it may be kinder to her in the longer term - I am sure you already know this. Dogs are full members of your family and not merely pets.

We all trip up and fall over eventually.

.... Thank you! I don't remember if I shot it on my Gitzo monopod or not but most likely did so that 'handheld' focus stacking would stand a better chance of being successful.

Interestingly that second shot was on my 40-150mm F/2.8 PRO + MC-20 which made the aperture F/5.6 but one of the several advantages of a wider aperture lens is the fundamental fact that the lens reads the light and focusses at its widest aperture until the second you fire the shutter.

It is a special lens you know as Canon are discontinuing the 65mm M/pe so which other camera manufacturer now does a macro lens of over 1:1 magnification.

So I think it is special.

a very wader day today , , the highlight being a murmuration of curlews over 200 just descended in waves a sight to behold , managed to grab a few shots to

#3 don’t you just hate those monstrosities. I am all for renewable energy but the model is all wrong- local generation would be more efficient but outwith the power of large corporations.

I spotted a heads up on DPReview that the 300mm f4 has new v1.6 firmware of which this is said....

  • Improved sleep recovery operation.
So just FWIW until there may be some insights?

Laowa has for some time.
.... Indeed, and a very good macro lens by all accounts and evidence.

However, won't the soon to be announced OM 90mm Macro have some significant advantages which will make it more flexible? Weatherproof, Image Stabilisation and Autofocus are definite advantages, plus compatibility with onboard body Focus Stacking including when handheld.

But, what suits one photographer might not suit another best and it's Horses-for-Courses. < If I had £1 for every time I have said that, I could doubtless buy the new lens! :D

I have a Laowa 50mm f2.8 C Dreamer 2:1 macro lens and they do a variety of such lenses. I am very happy with this and chose it over the M.Zuiko 60mm and would any day of the week.

.... My macro lenses have been the Canon 100mm F/2.8L IS (faultless) and Olympus M.Zuiko 60mm and like quite a few other users I didn't get on at all with the modus operandi of the 60mm (now sold) to the extent that I considered the Laowa lenses but their limited features don't suit my subjects which are very different from yours Alf. I even bought a Metabones Adapter so I could mount the Canon lens on my M1X but unfortunately it doesn't now physically fit the OM-1 'prism' overhang.

Let's hope that the forthcoming OM M.Zuiko 90mm Macro is nothing like their 60mm! Hopefully we should know soon and in time for the season's first minibeasts to emerge.

Heading to the coast at the weekend and thinking of hiring the Panasonic 50-200mm lens to photograph seal pups.

Are wex good for this? I live in Cambridge, but can't find Cambridge as a place to collect/drop off...

.... It's very important not to disturb seal pups (or adult seals) in wild coastal regions - I can't emphasise that enough.

Consequently you need as much focal length reach and distance as possible. More than 400mm! (equivalent to your 200mm).

Where are you headed?
We usually visit the seals at Horsey in Norfolk as it's not far from home and is a lovely trip to share with visitors.
During the busiest pupping the beaches are closed. There are viewing areas on the dunes with volunteers from the marvellous https://www.friendsofhorseyseals.co.uk/
Their facebook page suggests that the majority of pups and adults have left but there will still be some to see.

During the busy December period I've mostly used the plastic fantastic Olympus 40-150mm from the dunes.
Last time I took the 75-300mm Olympus and the only disappointment was a lot of smudgy fur due to slow shutter speeds and wind.

EDIT - forgot to mention, if you were going to the Horsey seals you could stop by the WEX showroom on the Norwich ring road. It has free parking etc. and lots of temptation :D
