Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

I am interested in how good the M5 is at shooting video.

Would owners say it is as good as a camcorder ?

Was out down Regents street this afternoon picking something up from the Apple store and I saw some guy was taking some picture of the outside with a EM5. Must have thought I was a nutter looking at the camera as I walked passed him.

When I get some more fund I'll have to start looking at for a telephono zoom.

Managed to get down to Edinburgh Airport this evening to try out my EM5 with the Panasonic 100-300 lens.

Was fine although struggling with the lens, it seems to frequently completely refuse to focus on the EM5, noticed my 25mm do this as well, interestingly none of my Olympus lenses do, I hope its not a hint of an ongoing incompatibility :(

Have you updated the firmware to 1.2?

Yes, It was a piece-of-cake.

Follow the instructions to the letter and have patience and more patience when the dots start going around.

Go and do something else untill that big OK appears.

Interesting they are touch screen compatible. I think I will invest in these too. Thanks for the tip

I have just had a look for firmware version 1.2 and it appears to have been removed from the Olympus web site.

I read a comment elsewhere that Olympus had told people not to update to 1.2 but I couldn't find anywhere that Oly has officially said this, hope theres not a problem with it as I've already updated.

I think for some reason it's missing from the mac download area. If you use the camera updater programme that came with the disk it will determine if you need to update. Remember to remove the lens though as otherwise it doesn't recognise the camera.

Chris. I had updated to 1.2 and have seen a bit of an improvement on C-AF.

Thanks Richard, its not really the AF performance as such, when it works it seems good, even C-AF which I've heard many people say is terrible.

Its the fact that occasionally the lens will just refuse to focus at all, it almost as if its not getting the instruction from the shutter button to do anything.

Have you switched the shutter release in anyway from the main button? I know with certain slrs you can configure that it will not release without the AFL button being pressed first. Does the shutter release work by touching the screen button?

If it were me I would do a full reset and see if it clears.

Sorry cant think of anything else.

I have an odd question I took 100 shots last night in RAW and JPEG mode but before I did I configured the F2 button to be a 2x magnifier. I thought this would just affect the viewfinder but I have imported both the RAW and JPEG both are the same resolution but the JPEG is a 2x magnified image without loosing any resolution. Have I missed something or is this a really interesting feature.

Be keen to hear anyone else's views?

Not stealing ChrisM's thunder, we've been PM-ing on photography at Edinburgh Airport. Here are some from recent weeks:

Anybody else got 3rd party batteries? First time I put one of the 3rd party batteries I got from Amazon today and I had to use a nail file to get it out. Seems like its a fraction bigger than the standard Olympus battery.

Yes Julian, they seem to fit into the body ok but the grip is a bit tight with mine. I stick a piece of cotton in so I can pull them out again in the grip. That method works fine for me and the battery life is no different then the originals I am finding.

I don't usually bother with screen protectors but I have ordered a couple of these, it's the anti-reflective bit that appeals.

Dave I got these yesterday and put one on (the camera not me) Maybe it was down to me not putting in on right but 24hrs later they're where bubbles on it than when I installed it.

Also when looking at photos in playback they looked very dark. I have since taken the protector of the screen and photoessays look OK again.

Full set added here: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=422850

But heres a few of my favourites with the 100-300mm lens, went back to Edinburgh Airport this evening.

Still having some issues with the lens refusing to autofocus at times though, which is very frustrating.

Thanks Del, I managed to cancel the order.

Well thats my Micro 4/3 setup settled for now,
Olympus EM5, 9-18mm, 14mm, 25mm, 45mm and another 100-300mm which I picked up tonight.

Happy with the all round lineup although I would maybe like a 20mm if they sort out some of the issues that it seems to be causing, duplication with the 25mm perhaps but very handy for when I just want a small high quality package of EM5 and pancake lens!

I'm going to reserve judgement on my wide angle until I've used the 9-18mm a little more, very tempted by the 7-14mm and also the 12mm but I really would need to have one of the 3 and while I will leave the 9-18mm up for sale I will use it to see what I think.

Overally very happy now with my lineup, sold the GF2 as I just wasn't going to use it as the EM5 is small itself, might add a cheap 12-50 kit lens if it comes up for the Weather Sealing but apart from that I'm hoping for drier weather so I can get out and shoot!!!!

I am thinking of listing my 12-50 kit lens if you are interested?

Warranty clarification required, I have seen several OMD's second hand for sale but concerned about the warranty.
I have read on this forum that the warranty is transferable, but if the receipt is in another persons name how can this work?
I did check on the Olympus web site but I could find no mention of transferred warranty entitlement.

Regards

I received a 3rd party battery in addition to the normal one with my 2nd hand OMD, it seems to fit in the camera fine but is a bit tight in the grip, I might just bite the bullet and buy another Olympus one

Thanks chaps, I was thinking of a thin piece of material around the 3rd party battery too, so I can pull it.

My 3rd party battery seems to have loosened off a bit not sure why to be honest but a better fit now. Need to order some more at the rate it uses them!

The case arrived, I was really surprised it's a quality piece of kit, leather and boxed.

Not a lot of use to me though.
