Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Really like those, especially 4 and 5. How was the focus with the birds in flight?

Thanks. Focus was not good on terns and puffins, they are way too fast, I managed a few gulls, which are slower but it isn't the right gear for BIF. No. 5 was a 'lucky' shot.

How is everybody getting on with the grip, I did find the camera difficult to hold without one fitted.

I guess a follow up to your grip query, I read that the grip for the OMD is 2 part, so you can add the horizontal grip and then the vertical/battery grip separate.

How does just the first part of grip help in regards to the handling of the camera, and does anyone have a pic of their OMD with just this part attached?

I find it the perfect combo with the full grip fitted. Easier to handle, plus all the benefits of size weight over a DSLR

Just google om-d grip for loads of images

I used my OM-D's (it's nice to have 2) on another job last night - a school prom, alongside a pair of Canon 1D's. This was a full portable studio setup with Profoto lights, backgrounds etc, as well as candid stuff.

Just for fun, I used the OM-D's in the studio setup using Pocket Wizards to trigger the lights. I had an 8mm fisheye on one and the Panasonic 20mm on the other.

Whilst the results are very cool, I was disappointed with the speed of focus using the 20mm. Maybe it's a Panasonic v Olympus thing, but it was a bit sluggish, and in that scenario it's necessary to nail the focus immediately every time. However, every single shot was in focus, and they are crispy sharp too. I was going to use the Olympus 9-18 as a comparison but ran out of time, but I have another party to shoot tomorrow so will give it a go then.

Also, no adverse reaction from anyone with me using the small OM-D's whilst having a 1D slung over my shoulder. They do look nicely professional in my opinion.

Tried out the 12-50 kit lens in macro mode, quite pleased with it

Any chance of a sample photo at all, I have been taking lots of photo's in poorly or awkwardly light places, so really interested in seeing some results.

Hi all,

I am considering getting rid of my Canon kit (40D, lenses and flash) and buying a professional compact camera. This Olympus has caught my eye and I was wondering of some of the guys here who now have one could answer some questions please. Forgive me if some of these questions are a little noddy, I am new to these types of cameras.

- I like shooting motorsport - is the Olympus fast enough ?
- How would you compare the image quality to a full fat DSLR ?
- How would you compare the features/controls to a full fat DSLR ?
- Can only Olympus OM-D lenses be used ?

Thanks.

I like shooting motorsport - is the Olympus fast enough ?

I can't answer that I'm afraid although I'd be interested to know myself

- How would you compare the image quality to a full fat DSLR ?

So far looks very good, probably the best IQ of any of the M4/3 cameras so far, seems quite close to the Fuji X-Pro 1 that I've just recently had and people are raving about its IQ, I don't think you'd be disappointed

How would you compare the features/controls to a full fat DSLR ?

Control wise it seems good, again I've only just bought mine but very SLR like in setup, features and controls.

- Can only Olympus OM-D lenses be used ?

The Olympus OM-D uses the Micro Four Thirds lens mount of which there are currently a wide range of lenses by Olympus, Panasonic and Sigma. Its currently got the biggest lens lineup of any of the compact system cameras and it seems to be that theres a lens for almost anything.

See here: http://www.four-thirds.org/en/microft/lens.html for the lens line up

Thanks for the useful response.

Can other, non 4/3 lenses be used with converters eg Canon EOS ?

You can use just about anything on a M4/3 body, I use a few Canon FD lenses and Konica AR lenses.

Canon EOS lenses can be adapted as well although the important thing to note is that adapted lenses aren't autofocus.

Thanks guys. Sounds like the best route is to sell my EOS lenses and get some new ones. I don't mind losing the AF but not being able to control the aperture doesn't sound great.

Ref EOS lenses on MFT and aperture control...

I'm certain that I've seen mount adapters for Eos to MFT with aperture control on line. I've no idea how good or how expensive they are but anyone who's interested should Google them.

Thanks Alan, didn't realise they were available.7 here is one

Found a uk listing on ebay

If you buy one, please be sure to let us know how you get on with it! The adapter works the lens wide open and has blades built in to reduce the light passing through. How does that affect depth of field I wonder?

If this is not the correct one look at their range.

Fotodiox do adaptors for most lenses, I have one for Oly OM to 4/3, excellent piece of kit.

Don't be put off by the 'America' thing, service is excellent.

My apologies if this has been asked before.

I only got my Oly E-M5 yesterday and I can't find out what to do to have the display on both the EVF and the screen.:bang: Now I'm sure there must be a so-so simple way but I just can't find it.

Any help will be most gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

After trying to solve the above problem the mist suddenly cleared and I thought I bet if I click that little button on the side of the EVF I reckon the problem will be solved,

In the words of the immortal F.F. YABBA DABBA DOOOOO!!

I'm stuck again withe my E-M5 so looking for help again. :help::bang:

Quite a few of the items in the menu are greyed out so I thought that's no problem just do a reset. Then I saw that the reset was greyed out as well. I don't know what I did to cause that to happen but if anyone can help I'll me most grateful.

This is certainly one hell of a great forum.

For th second time in 24hrs. I ask a question that has puzzled me all morning and within a short time of asking I find the answer myself.

I'm beginning to think there must be some or someone who has the gift of telepathy.;):D

Maybe you could post the answer in case someone else comes across the same issue?

I've got G.A.S. :D but I think I'll hold off until September at the least to give the makes time to announce their new products but I am trying to keep up to speed so...

Has anyone noticed aperture rattling (in changing light) and if so is it an issue?

Something I have always done before switching a camera off is to turn the mode dial to Auto. When I was having the problem this morning the camera was still on Auto. As soon as I turned the dial to another setting the problem was solved.

I have also d/loaded the update and all seems to be well.

You may not believe me... but I was going to suggest that you check what mode you were in and try another... But you got there yourself :D

No reason not to believe you mate.:D

I guarantee it's something I'll never forget. :cuckoo:

Hehe, I'm the same I'm torn between picking up the 12mm or the 100-300mm.... but I also like the look of the 75mm although its very pricey and the new 12-35mm but again at £800 it seems a lot!!!
