Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

Well I was awake very early this morning so i thought I would pop over to my daughters garden to test the new lens out as it is much more wildlife friendly than mine. I think the squirrels were more pleased to see me than she was!! This was wide open at ISO 8000.

Wow fantastic shot.
Thanks for sharing.

Superb Gordon ..and all because of a gimbal which is now probably redundant LOL

Strangely enough I used that gimbal for this shot. I set it up on a tripod, pre focused and sat indoors with a remote waiting for the squirrels to leap. But you are correct the gimbal is all but redundant now.

Just a quick question re SD cards.
I do not do any video. What speed card do I need to keep up with downloading the buffer when shooting high frame rates. I believe the buffer has a limit of 99 frames.

FWIW in my OM1 I only use 300Mb/s UHS II and to date I have never filled the buffer to the point at which it slows down. Compared to slower UHS I cards.

....I have used UHS1 cards and not found them to be a problem, agree that they are slower but even when I have used procapture I have not filled teh buffer and it has cleared in about 10 seconds.
Cheapskate John

Finally gave in and went to the end of my road to watch the Manx Grand prix. I know nout about bike racing so just put the OM1 on motorosport subject detection pointed it at the road and pressed the shutter. Considering the bikes were going past at 150ish mph i was amazed the OM1 detection picked them up so well.

Was out for a walk today and saw a heron, which then attempted to get a fish - it got away.

I had decided to travel light, so only had the plastic fantastic 75-300 with me. OM-1, not enough time to set bird detection focussing. It is about 1/4 frame.

Well I am now the owner of a 150 - 400mm lens.
It is big, shiny and very obvious.
Do any other owners use lens coats? If so what one would you recommend?
I have to admit I have never been a fan of them in the past but this is an expensive lens which would benefit from staying scratch and chip free.
Hi. When trading a lens in using my hard case - which had another lens covered with a lens coat - the staff there suggested I remove it as the lens coat would retain moisture; they had seen lenses with no scuffs but damaged internally by mould. This was not a random exchange; I have been dealing with this branch and the very sound people there for at least 10 years. Now when I go out with that lens, I put on the piece that I know will be at greatest risk of nicks etc and remove it when. I get home. A pain butt better that than have an expensive doorstop.

Interesting insight, thanks.

For sure an interesting insight.

IIRC Petr Bambousek uses "skins" I cannot recall the full name of the product but it is literally a film covering and he regularly frequents rain forest environments.

None too sure how protective but would at least reduce scuffs & scratches but doubtful for bump protection???

A friend of mine uses camo tape.

For my Canon lens I’ve been using a modified camo neck warmer :ROFLMAO: Just to hide the white-ness. I fixed elastic at each end and sliced it underneath - one end is open and it’s cut most of the way along. I can access all the buttons and it hides my hand which is a bonus. It doesn’t provide any bump protection though. I am thinking of getting a neoprene one for the big white, although my neck warmer does fit. It is light in weight, airy and cost me about £2.

Further to the lens coat discussion. I came across this today - an old thread which I hope I'm allowed to post here @Cobra ?
- link removed - however it related to problems with moisture in places like Costa Rica after rainfall.

Here is my home made solution - only works using the camera in landscape mode and was really just my cheap way of making it less white and not adding weight. It is a tad short I think on this lens, and I had to cut the camera end elastic as it is bigger than the Canon which I had tailored it to, so it is currently attached with a cord and clip. The camera end is only attached at the top of the lens and it is cut most of the way underneath.

Having read the above thread, I'm now thinking maybe of doing a second tailored version for this lens - easier as the barrel doesn't move, which it did on the Canon. Could even add some padding around the hood?
Yes I know it looks a bit naff  ... maybe stop anyone wanting to steal it?:ROFLMAO:

The tape does sound and look good. I'd hate to get sticky residue on my lens though.

Link removed - I realise it's not good to send people away from here, however I thought it was pertinent to the discussion, and it didn't look like the sort of place we'd like to visit more than once :ROFLMAO:

We don't normally approve of people links to other photography forums.

If anyone is waiting in a queue for the 150-400 and has itchy fingers currently in stock at LCE I was in the Taunton store this morning browsing the second hand stock guy asked me if I was interested in buying the 150-400mm to which I said I already had one!

I got an email from LCE today that mentioned it was in stock... and OM tell me it's now being offered with a 5 year warranty!! I just missed out :(

Amazing!

How did you manage to focus, was it bird detect, pre-focus or just spot?
Thanks. I have af on c-af (not tracking) . Af limit on 0-6m and then i pre focused at the distance it was patrolling at so when it came into that area the af was able to grab it.
I sometimes use bird detect but didnt on that occasion.
