Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

OMG the big white has been put by for me. Do I do it??!! Excited but frightened by the prospect of owning such an expensive lens.

It will mean saying goodbye to my Canon long lenses which will at least offset the cost to some extent, and it will be nice to pare down some gear.

Has anyone taken the plunge and regretted it?

I was expecting this dilemma to come in many months time.
Go for it! I was phoning around some shops a week ago asking to be put on waiting lists as I did not think that anyone had any stock but Campkins Cameras said that they had received one that day and was available, decision time! - just played with it in the garden so far but am impressed - my concern about buying without picking one up was the weight, but no issues so far.
Sod the hedge and fence, go for it and enjoy!

Wow that’s quick! I’ve only been on the waiting list about 3 weeks I think - which is why I’m so surprised. I had planned on hiring one.

It’s 30g heavier than my Canon set up (if I exclude the Canon extender) so weight wise I think I can handle it. I’ve shot football matches hand held with the Canon… although not recently…. but I’ve been doing a lot of swimming :ROFLMAO: It’s more the balance of the weight I’m concerned about. Are you on an OM1 with no battery grip?

Yes, I have an om1 and no battery grip. Seems balanced to me. I switched from canon to Olympus due to weight issues and missing shots. It’s rejuvenated my interest!

That’s good to know, thank you. I spent some time in a fox hide recently with my Canon (mainly because I needed the zoom) and I was disappointed. I got some good shots, but I think the OM1 focuses better. I think it’s a yes from me…. :$

Bebop I have used the OM1 and the 150-400 with the grip but now actually prefer it without the grip I also found adding the grip below as it cradles in the hand perfectly details of the supplier is in the comments section

One other purchase was a decent 95mm filter (filters often divide opinion) I baulked at the near £300 for the OMDS so bought this one and have been pleased with it

Thanks. I'll have a watch and I have been looking at filters. Normally I don't think I will use one, but I do like to have one on when I'm at the beach shooting kitesurfers as there can be a lot of sand and foam flying about then.

Annoyingly I was recently sent an OM survey which would have given me a 10% off voucher on the filter... the survey has closed now. Silly me.

edit: Wow that filter is a lot cheaper. It says UV which is odd as I thought digital cameras didn't need UV filters.

No, they don't but the manufacturers insist on still making them instead of pure protectors. Perhaps they think they're easier to sell as they 'do' something?

Agree whilst not required on mirrorless cameras I bought the UV filter to protect the front element I bought the Urth one from Amazon took some test shots with and without the filter couldn't see any discernable difference kept the filter on the front since then

Really couldn't justify £259 for the OMDS version but wanted to add a layer of protection. I think losing the lens hood is a more scary prospect than breaking UV filter £519 for a replacement

Digital cameras don't need them, and B&W, Hoya, Nikon and Zeiss all make clear protection filters. There may be more, but these are the ones I know about..

Bebop. Don't keep us in suspense. Did you decide to get the lens?
Ha ha! I've only just sat down. Needless to say the hedge and fence will have to wait and I am now in possession of the big white :D :D :D :D

We drove up to Park Cameras - which includes a ferry ride for us, and I was able to handle it. I sold two Canon lenses and extenders, so now only have shorter lenses for my Canon - it could herald a new era and the demise of Canon for me, but we will see.

After much angst yesterday and talking it through (poor old Mr. Bebop - but what a star!), I felt completely happy with my decision on the way home.

Thank you all for helping me spend my our money.

As soon as I got home, I had a quick bite to eat and went looking for owls. I expect I'll never see another one again :ROFLMAO: First impressions are wonderful, but the sun was setting and not many birds about. :D

For anyone else interested, it appears that they are clearing the backlog of orders and seem to have caught up. They had 15 lenses in this week and have been told they will get more next week.

Re the filter discussion, there seem to be some positive reviews of the Urth filter, even if it is labelled as UV. In fact fStoppers seem to favour it over the Hoya one.

I've had a lot of Hoya Pro and Hoya HD protective filters over the years and been reasonably happy with them. I only use them now in hostile environments such as the beach. These Urth ones are quite a bit cheaper than the B&W protective ones. Can there be any harm in having a UV filter rather than a protective one.

Last week I was out with my friend and she had a bramble go into her lens hood and mark her front element of her 40-150 lens. It has made me more wary when just walking with my camera.

(see in bold) I don't think so, the UV part is cutting out wavelengths the sensor isn't actually seeing. At least that is my assumption without actually checking the specs.

Bebop
Congratulations on your decision but I wish you hadn't said that Park Cameras are getting more in. I live in Gosport so they are not too far. They are one of the few still advertising the lens at the lower (can't believe I said that)! Price.
I have a safari to Botswana booked next month, needless to say I have ordered one. Now all I have to do is sell a kidney or ebay a grandchild!!

Think of it as trying to boost the economy! You will NEED it for Botswana! Look forward to seeing the pictures! Whereabouts are you going?

I'm going to the Chobe River on a Pangolin safari. I went last year with Toon Safari (Ann & Steve Toon) and enjoyed it. The prices this year were out of my comfort zone particularly as Pangolin wanted $2000 single supplement. I object to paying that amount of money NOT to sleep with someone!!! ( can I say that these days). Then last month I had an email from Pangolin saying that they had a couple of spaces due to cancellation and had removed the single supplement and cut the price substantially. Happy days! Add to that the dates coincided with Virgin Airlines reward seats and it was a no brainer. Now I am going to wipe out all that saving with a new lens! To be honest I will be lucky if it is available before then. If it isn't I do have other Oly lenses.

We went with pangolin in2019, staying on the boat. It was superb. Have a great time! Look forward to seeing your photos!

PS may be worth your time calling round dome camera shops for the lens, that’s how I got mine !!

I think you could br correct about calling shops as some people will back out of the purchase.

Oh how wonderful. I think you might need someone to help carry your (not too heavy please) bag??? I've never done a safari, so I'm very envious. Sadly Mr. Bebop is not keen, though I'm sure he'd love it if he tried it.

I had noticed the price difference too and confess it did sway me even more. I hope you get it in time! I agree it might be worth putting yourself down on a few lists as I'm sure that's what others do. I didn't, as I wasn't certain whether I wanted could justify it.

Just do the safari before you get to old bebop , unfortunately age and health won’t let me so fulfill your dreams while you can

Bebop. I can recommend both Zimanga in South Africa and pangolin safari in Botswana. I am sure others can recommend great trips. The fence can wait, enjoy your lens!! ( I'm good at spending other people's money - but to be honest you started it)!!!

Thanks Jeff, I know you’re right. Mr.Bebop is supportive of me going alone, but it seems such an indulgence and the choice is bewildering. A good friend has been diagnosed with cancer and it’s a stark reminder that we have to grasp life while we can.

:ROFLMAO: I’ve had a look at the Pangolin site this evening. What have you started? :ROFLMAO: As i mentioned above, I don’t really have a clue where to start looking, but you’ve given me a pointer, thank you.

If you want any info on Pangolin pm me. My wife and I went with them and would recommend them - they do various options which are ‘different’

Yet heart failure taught me that lesson .if I want something now I get it if humanly and financially possible .. no pockets in a shroud

Bebop.
Take a look at toon safari they go to Zimanga and have limited single places with no supplement. The bad news is I've got that place for next year! You can book Pangolin safaris direct but be aware all seasons are not equal! If you sign up to their newsletter you will get a heads up for special deals or cancellations which is what i have got next month.
I'm sorry but once the idea is in your head it doesn't go away ( a bit like the lens).
If you can do it you will love it.

Thank you both so much. I did drop Pangolin a line last night and will schedule a call with them. I'm hurriedly trying to know a bit more about it before I speak to them - such as the seasons. Perhaps the rainy summer is better for photography?

Mr. Bebop has said he definitely doesn't want to go. I have some friends who might be interested, but perhaps I do need to go alone.

I am out at the moment but will be in shortly. Definitely do some homework before speaking to pangolin. The person that calls you is from the sales team in Cape Town. They are lovely and will bend over backwards to accommodate you - but it is their job to sell you a trip. The peak season is priced much higher but that's because there is more animal action although I believe the winter is excellent for birds. Just bear in mind that the animals don't have a calendar so the weeks at either end of high season should still be good and much cheaper.
There are lots of reviews on the Web but feel free to call me if you think a quick chat would help

Gordon thanks so much. Yes they have been in touch and they have offered a date and it looks great, but I am hurriedly trying to research and not make an error in haste. I've no idea if flights are difficult to get. I have just screen shot your mobile number if you want to edit your post and remove it - for online safety :) Off to do more homework now and may ring you later, but just decline if it's not a convenient time and I won't be offended.
