Olympus OM-D E-M5, E-M1, E-M10 - Mk1, Mk2 & Mk3 Owners Thread

How exciting. I have just come back from Thruxton where I was photographing the British Superbike championship practice race. I could have made good use of a 150 - 400!
I am in all evening, call any time for a chat. Flights are straightforward but it does involve a night in a hotel at Johannesburg before the connecting flight to Kasane. There is a very reasonably priced, comfortable hotel attached to the airport so it is not any real hassle.

Amazing day out at Wild Zoological Park near Wolverhampton on Saturday and the first time I've ever tried birds in flight. Not easy.

I can highly recommend Wild if you're in the area. The largest free flying display of birds in the world apparently.

Quite happy with how they turned out as the light wasn't the greatest and I don't have exactly the world's best long zoom lens (Olympus 40-150 R)

Feel free to critiques as I'm sure I have a great deal to learn.

Some are heavy crops as well. Need a longer lens really. Certainly a faster one.

Wow great captures! That is a great little lens. So light and compact and you've shown how well it can do.

....And I'm in Wolverhampton tomorrow!! We have plans, so I suspect we won't manage a visit this time.

The Hawk Conservancy near Andover has a massive display of free flying vultures, eagles and owls. Definitely worth a visit if you can.

edit: I've just checked the website as Mr. Bebop says he wouldn't mind visiting. Making me feel gooey with everything moving on the website :ROFLMAO:

Well, that sounds like a fine opportunity to fine tune your 150-400mm technique:)

PS and post some of the results.

know there is lots of stuff on YouTube about how to get the best out of your om1 and there are a few which are geared towards the om1. Has anyone tried any of them ( eg sulasula.com, espen hellend) and would you recommend any.. I am sure I could get more out of the om1 and was wondering if any were worth the money? I do follow a couple on you tube but was wondering if there was something more focussed for the om1.
thanks

I found Matthews settings a good starting point for BIF he also does a walkthrough in his video which is linked on the first page can also recommend Mike Lane and Roger Hance on you Tube and the OM Channel

Mike Lane is a good personal experience widely experienced user.

This slightly older video re: procapture still worthy of attention.

Oh, unlike Petr Bambousek & Espen Holland, Mike is not an ambassador. Note ~ I do like and appreciate Petr & Espen but would not now necessarily pay for learning products........though still a lot to learn & re-remember

Thank you gents - I do follow Roger Hance and Mike Lane and like their pragmatic approach. I was trying to get some info on the button customisation and fast track my learning - big trip coming up and want to be prepared.
thanks again

I couldn't put Mr. Bebop through anything too torturous. I did take my 40-150 plus extenders, and the 12-40. We did have a plan and not an awful lot of time, so we stuck with a visit to Ironbridge, the Black Country Living Museum and RAF Cosford.
As yet, I've not managed to get out with the lens for a good trial. I have taken a few distant shots - it strikes me the bird is still as small in the frame - I'm just further away than I was previously

Has anyone got any experience with the OM1 shooting macro with the zuiko 60mm macro lens. I am thinking of buying both of these items?..thanks in advance

I'm very happy with the results I get from this combo, but I don't specialise in macro. One criticism is that the throw of the lens is quite great - lots of turns to focus it, but I haven't found this too much of an issue. It's so small and light, it's really easy to throw it into your pocket.

The 1:1 is not exactly intuitive, but I like it. When you select 1:1, you then have to move your camera to the correct distance to get it in focus. You then get the full 1:1 image filling your sensor. I use back button focusing, so it won't try and refocus when I hit the shutter button. If you use front button, I guess you'd need to put it into manual focus to stop the camera trying to focus when you hit the shutter button (which is I think where people come unstuck).

I have heard of focus issues from people using S-AF and single point focus on the OM1
It seems to say it has locked focus and confirms it on screen with green light/beep
When reviewed the shot is blurred, this behaviour has been repeated by more than one person and shown to be a fault.
This might be an issue using the 60mm and AF although I realise MF is more popular for macro.
Recently bought a 60mm myself and intend using it on either a Panasonic G9 or an E-M5 ii

OM/Olympus also confirmed a problem exists with this reply to some one experiencing issues

The OM-1 can specify a narrower range than the previous model with a single target, but in dark places or subjects with low contrast, the single target S-AF lacks contrast and cannot be focused.
A so-called false focus phenomenon is likely to occur, in which it is determined that the subject is out of focus, or an in-focus display is performed when it is determined that the subject is out of focus.
This is the characteristic of OM-1's S-AF.
Currently, depending on the shooting environment, I would like you to either increase the target or use C-AF.

At this time, we cannot promise how much S-AF will improve, but we will do our best to meet your expectations through updates.

When was that from, as IIRC some postings about S-AF not being quite 'right' were 'apparently' improved in the most recent firmware update.

little egret fly past today ,just a meagre 300mm f4 + 1.4tc can't keep up with you posh
Nothing wrong with the 300mm f4 Jeff I loved mine but finally got round to selling it yesterday. It just wasn't getting the use any more since I got the big white one

Perhaps they have been sorted out, I haven't got an OM1 and just remember reading about this issue.

Quick trip out to Eryri on Saturday for a meet up with a Micro 4/3s photography group on Facebook organised by David Griffiths (who also has a rather good YouTube channel).

Posted meeting time was 12:00pm just north of Porthmadog at Cwm Ystradllyn. A nice little lake with a tea hut nearby.

All told I think around 10 or 12 people met up and it was a good day.

04:15 start and got to Ogwen Falls at 07:30 and it was howling a gale and lashing it down. I wanted to do some photography on my own before the official meet time but the weather put paid to that.

I wanted to grab a shot under the road bridge on my EM1 MK2 (I'd already shot this scene on my old Sony A7R2).

The river was in spate and it was probably a little foolhardy going under the bridge but I managed it.

All in all a great day out & I got home at 21:30 after a slow pootle home.

Here are some shots from the day.

Lovely shots. I have many happy memories of doing an outward bounds course at Ogwen as a 14 year old :)
I really like how you have the walls leading us through the images.

Cheers Bebop.

I had a great day but my quads are feeling it today I can tell you.

Peat bog and 2 ft high tussocks to try to walk on isn't a good idea really.

I meant to say, I especially like the tunnel shot on Flickr.

I'm sure that workout is good for you :) ... though I ended up sitting in the bog in Ireland once, that wasn't a great experience :ROFLMAO:

As long as there was loo paper...................................

Thanks Jeff.

Yes it's typical.

The weather brightened up a bit from 11am.

I have to go back under the Ogwen Falls bridge again in better weather.

I have a shot from my old Sony A7R2 in better weather (and I was able to get to a better viewpoint too) but don't feel it's appropriate to post in a M4/3 thread.

New video John on customising the OM1 hopefully of use to you

Well I am now the owner of a 150 - 400mm lens.
It is big, shiny and very obvious.
Do any other owners use lens coats? If so what one would you recommend?
I have to admit I have never been a fan of them in the past but this is an expensive lens which would benefit from staying scratch and chip free.

Congratulations!! It’s an investment, just think of all the photos you will get inBotswana.
I got an outdoor photography gear one and I would recommend. I do not use all the bits but that’s just me. Pm me if you want to see what it looks like
ENJOY!!!!
