Nice shot of a nice car. (y)

Thank you! :) The picture was taken at a car meeting, and at car meetings one needs luck. - Where cars park, how much room there is, who walks into the picture,
and there are the nose-scanners ...

For events like this, I take 35mm lenses. When I can control the picture taking more, I prefer 50mm.

(My 2,5/35 Summarit is a good, compact lens. Used prices on ebay have doubled since I bought it used years ago.)

Today the weather was pleasant so I went out for a very long walk with the M10R.

Erm there's a lot of pictures!!

Now it's been nearly a month with the 10R I feel I understand it better... I've done a little profiling for the colours, but that's a work in progress (I suspect I'll end up toning it down!!)

My computer struggles a little with the files... it takes ages to delete them from the SD card...

One of the 10R reviews described the R as "the spiritual successor to the M9" well I can certainly confirm that 10R files on a 2021 Macbook Pro very much remind of uncompressed M9 DNGs on a 2010 era windows laptop :D

The R has re-piqued my interest in BW photography (not that I'm that into it) and I'm pleased with the colour depth.

In a nutshell I'd describe the 10R as 'hyper-real' this works far better for some shots than others, and I'm finding that I need to turn down the sharpening or use a negative clarity value sometimes.

Anyway... 6 hours on my feet... probably walked 10m/16km... explored back alleys and side streets, came home with 340+ images, so here's a somewhat indulgent (in quantity) selection!!

BW First!

M10R1658.LR.jpg

I'm really liking the 10R for BW conversion... both the acutance and the slightly noisy appearance of the sensor output IMHO work nicely with no colour

Sorry about the cat!! I stopped to stroke her and she started following me around and wouldn't go away, so I though sod it and made a snap (no that doesn't really justify including it here!)

In colour I find the sensor great for fine detail, it really brings it too life... I'm a little less convinced with big blocks of anything that's all one colour and quite featureless, where it becomes so hyper-real that it kinda looks computer generated (which technically it is of course!!)

I don't think this is a deal breaker, just something to get used to working with. Overall the files are nicer to edit than the M10 ones with more exposure latitude and it's lovely finally having a true base ISO100 camera, perhaps just a slight shame that it comes with the burden of 40mpx and all that entails RE processing requirements - both the files themselves and the computer on which they reside. (plus most of my work ends up at 2048 long edge on the web!!)

Overall not unhappy though (but there's never a free lunch)!

I tend to favour a 28 for cars, 35 for bikes. (y)

That is a great car shot Immo

Thank you for your friendly appreciation of my efforts, Adam.:)

But it was a somewhat lucky shot ... ---

This is more typical of car meetings: Car, driver, organizer and a visitor in the frame ... (M9 - Summarit 2,5/35 f 2,8) :

So, the car "cropped free", with IQ consequences ... :

I am pondering a Leica as two friends are big fans. Please tell me what you used before [if not your first] and why you switched. Thanks.

My pleasure @justpix

Yes, the world is a busy and cluttered place for pictures (I guess less so for landscapers..!)

I had Fuji right before. I got the M9 as I really liked the look of the pictures from that sensor and ran it in conjunction with my Fujis (which were more modern and had more features and better ISO)

After a while I realised that I hardly ever used the fujis preferring instead the challenges of the Leica (less driver aids = harder to drive = more rewarding when it all goes right)

Since then I’ve supplemented the M9 with increasingly more modern Leica Ms for the times that I do actually need a modern camera.

Contrary to fanboi rhetoric.. digital Leicas deprecate quite heavily. Buy mint used non-latest model examples from stores with warranty and the system isn’t really any more expensive to buy into than the top models from the regular brands (yes, new v used a bit of an awkward comparison… but equally one is either happy to spend some 4 figure sum on a camera or one isn’t. The choice of camera is immaterial to ones bank balance.)

Hi, I bought my first Leica, an M6 in 1988.

My analogue phase:

ad1) I used a Practica CX6, a Minolta XD7, ROLLEI 35s, and MF ROLLEI 2,8 GX, FUJI GS645.

ad2) I did not switch, but bought the M6 because I always wanted to have a Leica M, liked its handling, the feeling of quality, the compactness.

My digital phase :

ad1) I used a 5MP MINOLTA, OLYMPUS 5050, NIKON D200, OLYMPUS Pen EP-1, SONYs (NEX, A7, A7R2), NIKON D800 ...

ad2) I did not switch. I bought my M9 in 2010 (another one two years ago used) as a complementary camera. I still use other cameras:
OLYMPUS Pen-1 and NEX-7 for dog walks, SONY A7R2 for travel when I need IS and high ISO, NIKON D500 and D850 when I need AF performance.

I am happy with my Leica M9s. But this is due to the fact that I use them for what they can do well.

My advice : Borrow or rent one, try it exhaustively for your subjects, and make up your mind then.

I'm like Adam @Adam Bonn I had Fuji X-Pro1s before moving to Leica M9s but unlike Adam I haven't got into more modern Leicas (apart from the little D-Lux Typ109) I love my M9s. I still have Fuji Cameras X-T2s and GFX 50Ss for my landscape stuff but for my general, travel stuff I still prefer my M9s.

Ah thanks - so they are one amongst others. Interesting. I wonder if there are solo users on here who would chip in.

Hi, this depends on what you want to use your Leica M for, and which M you are interested in.

It is the same with cars. - A PORSCHE 911 is a very good car. If it meets all your driving requirements, you will be happy.

If not, you should buy another car, or an additional one ... ---

I was using a nikon d300 before (as it was semi pro and had more options at the time I bought it - probably 15 years ago now).
Saw toby's (think it was) shots with the leica m9 plus leica glass... nice.
Always wanted one, but price was ahem a bit big.
Then chance came for a used one at a vaguely affordable range. Chip in my camera and some of the lenses, one m240 plus 28mm voigtlander and an adaptor for the remaining nikon lenses later... hooked. Definitely liked the range finder (reminded me of an older nikon camera with my dad) view finder.
Invested in the electronic viewfinder to assist in getting at least some shots with the focus in the right place.
then another chance to upgrade came along (I went in to get a bag, swapped for a used m10). Worked out as the m10 had better iso and felt right.
Havent tried the m10r or m11 yet. Lotto still hasn't arrived :) nor the latest s / q (both of which also look quite nice). I think I prefer the m though

I don’t think I would want a manual focus Leica. Would buy used if I decided to add one.

I also have an LX100 (which is kinda a Leica..) but I never use it, like the battery's probably leaked and destroyed it by now and I just haven't noticed

The very occasional phone shot aside... I haven't taken a picture with a camera that's not a manual focus M since May 2019.

There's certain things that I just wouldn't attempt with it, but it's quite liberating to be restricted!

I see in a later post that you want one with AF. I've no experience there... heard good things about the Q range but I've never had one

(The 18mm Distagon is a good lens, I think (on the M9, with manually selected profile #11134). It has been discontinued.

But every now and then there are reasonable offers on ebay around € 700.)

Which version of the 18mm Distagon?
I have a C/Y 18mm which I used on the Contax system years ago and have recently got a C/Y to M mount adapter but have not yet used, probably because I don't really like using the M240 in live view. Must give it a go sometime soon.

(Not a strict comparison, no ceteris paribus (distance, aperture) ... The bokeh balls of the Sonnar look smoother, those of the Apo a little grainy.

But no onion rings, which my Nokton 1,2/35 v1 shows.)

I really like that one Adam, particularly how the paddle boarder is so well defined standing out against the fluidity of the sea, distant haze and clouds. I hope it is warmer where you are, it is still rather chilly in London.

Thank you very much Keith. I masked off the sky and added some dehaze/texture, but the sea/paddle boarder are as seen, oh and it's a hell of crop - but the M10R is good at that

It's been quite warm here (15, 16, 17 during the day 7, 8, 9 at night) - but bar about 7 days in the past 28, its chucked it down with torrential rain all day every day. Not near me, but some areas down south have had flooding (cars floating away, people drowning type flooding...)

There's a few things I miss from the UK (fish and chips, salt and vinegar crisps, Guinness) but the winter certainly isn't one of them!

It was sunny yesterday and today so I made sure I got out with the camera both days... yesterday's pics where more pleasing to me though... today I was just p**sing about finding colourful things!!!!

M10R2220.LR.jpg

(after all the rain I've never seen so many full washing lines as I did today)

(If I'd waited long enough this could have been a street photo... imagine there's a woman with a green jumper on one of the chairs for the text book colour theory pop and contrast !!!!!!!)
