Today the weather was pleasant so I went out for a very long walk with the M10R.
Erm there's a lot of pictures!!
Now it's been nearly a month with the 10R I feel I understand it better... I've done a little profiling for the colours, but that's a work in progress (I suspect I'll end up toning it down!!)
My computer struggles a little with the files... it takes ages to delete them from the SD card...
One of the 10R reviews described the R as "
the spiritual successor to the M9" well I can certainly confirm that 10R files on a 2021 Macbook Pro very much remind of uncompressed M9 DNGs on a 2010 era windows laptop
The R has re-piqued my interest in BW photography (not that I'm that into it) and I'm pleased with the colour depth.
In a nutshell I'd describe the 10R as 'hyper-real' this works far better for some shots than others, and I'm finding that I need to turn down the sharpening or use a negative clarity value sometimes.
Anyway... 6 hours on my feet... probably walked 10m/16km... explored back alleys and side streets, came home with 340+ images, so here's a somewhat indulgent (in quantity) selection!!
BW First!
I'm really liking the 10R for BW conversion... both the acutance and the slightly noisy appearance of the sensor output IMHO work nicely with no colour
Sorry about the cat!! I stopped to stroke her and she started following me around and wouldn't go away, so I though sod it and made a snap (no that doesn't really justify including it here!)
In colour I find the sensor great for fine detail, it really brings it too life... I'm a little less convinced with big blocks of anything that's all one colour and quite featureless, where it becomes so
hyper-real that it kinda looks computer generated (which technically it is of course!!)
I don't think this is a deal breaker, just something to get used to working with. Overall the files are nicer to edit than the M10 ones with more exposure latitude and it's lovely finally having a true base ISO100 camera, perhaps just a slight shame that it comes with the burden of 40mpx and all that entails RE processing requirements - both the files themselves and the computer on which they reside. (plus most of my work ends up at 2048 long edge on the web!!)
Overall not unhappy though (but there's never a free lunch)!
