Whew, I've finally done it! I have taken the plunge into medium format! I am now the proud and very excited owner of a Bronica SQ-A.

It only took selling several cameras, negotiating with HMRC to recover some overpaid tax, and auctioning off unused goods on eBay over the last couple of weeks to amass the money to purchase it.

The camera is in really good condition and I'm really enjoying the waist level finder. My only complaint is that the darkslide seems a bit fiddly in that it must be inserted into the slot perfectly, otherwise the shutter still fires. Unfortunately, I wasted a whole roll of film before I realised that... oh well, now I know to look out for this.

Anyway, pictures below of my new toy:

Very nice! I really like my Bronica. With the dark slide, unless you're using more than one back, maybe it would be better just to put it way somewhere safe?

Thanks. Yeah, I just threw it in my bag after my first mishap, so that I wouldn't make the same mistake again, as I only have one back. That said, I think that the significant other is purchasing me another back for my birthday, which is coming up in a few weeks...

I have had the same problem with both a Bronica ETRS and a Mamiya RB67. They will both fire the shutter if the darkslide is out about 1/4".

I now leave them at home as you can still change the film without taking the film back off of the camera.

Nice self pressie!......Hope you enjoy the results you get from it.

Agree about the ETRS darkslide only having to be about 1/4" out for the shutter to fire......will have to look at my RZ67 to see if that is similar as I can't say I've took particular notice.

As for the SQ-A, if the shutter operates like on the ETRS then looking at the camera from the front ( ie lens facing you), turning the outer ring located around the shutter button fully clockwise will render the shutter release "locked" regardless of wether the darkslide is in place or not.

Perhaps this will help those who find the darkslide probmatic.

EDIT: Yes the same applies to the RZ67 althouth it's a good bit more than 1/4" , veering more towards an inch ....either way, like the ETRS the darkslide doesn't have to be fully extracted to allow the shutter to fire.
Again the shutter release can be "locked" on the RZ in the same way as for the ETRS

Yeah, that's what I did yesterday; I just left the back on when changing the film.

I'm going to try to use the camera a number of times over the next few weeks, as I'm looking to take the Bronica on holiday with me to Krakow in early March and I don't want to be surprised by any other little quirks...

Yeah, that shutter lock became a very important feature for me once I realised how finicky the darkslide was.

Alan that is a serious series of Trip's and an EE. Just right for candid work. Also love the upgraded leathers, very individual and classy!

Of all the film cameras I have owned over the last few years, the only one I truly regretted selling was a Nikon F2 Photomic. It had a 24mm lens that was a tad too wide for my tastes, and I had no other lenses so it was difficult to photograph much with the pairing. Despite that, the camera itself was a sensation, it was solid and a superb piece of machinery.

I have replaced it with a black F2A, which works with all my AI lenses obviously. It's superb!

Excellent, F2A's are very fine instruments, we need to see pictures:)

As promised - the F2A. Ignore the slightly grubby 28mm lens please! (it's an AF, I actually prefer focusing with them).

Very nice classic Nikon and that looks a like a great example.

Jealous of East Anglia!

Thanks Baz and Adrian!

Just loaded all three with some Agfa Vista, they're gonna get a run out over the weekend hopefully!

Dont forget the pen is a 1/2 frame, so composition is different from normal.
Portrait is landscape and versi visi err vsisi vers... tother way round!

It's a beauty. Really are great bits of kit. New purchase ?

My newest toy :D

And the bits that came with it, plus another 120 back.

The three small filters are inserts for the 150mm lens that provide different degrees of soft focus for those authentic 80s 'glamour' shots. Looking forward to using them ;)

And that's it for new toys for me for a while, I really need to offload some other gear that I never use before I even consider more kit. Unless I see a 110mm f/2.8 at a silly price ... :naughty:

Here's my new camera. I'm delighted with it. :) Please forgive the modern strap - don't want to risk the leather one that came with it!

Now that looks fantastic. One of my all time lusts.

A smart idea - not worth it for the possibility of brittle leather sending your camera to the ground. Looks like a lovely clean example, look forward to seeing the shots from it!

The Rollei makes up the majority of the photography I do.

Oh that is an absolute corker, it looks almost new. You have found a great example there.

Still hunting for one myself, not rushing and waiting for the right one at the right price to appear!

My "new" 127mm f3.8 C lens for the RB67

What i would describe as mint condition, only cost me £42 posted. The DOF wide open is negligible and it renders the OOF areas beautifully.
Was a little dismayed that it doesn't close focus as much as the 50mm so i might get some tubes for that. I can focus the 50mm from about an inch in front of the front element, this one needs about a foot and a half.

Looks a nice piece of glass and an real 'steal' at £42!

It feels like its barely been used, all of the dials feel nice and solid, well damped etc, makes my 50mm feel all loose and floppy

is £150 for Nikon F5 a good price ?

Sounds good but depends on it's condition. They seem a sturdy camera but they were the Pros choice for a few years, so there will be some that have seen a lot of life.

Thanks finding it was a stroke of luck. It's lovely to use, and the pictures look very good so far.. :)

One of the reasons I was initially reluctant to get into medium format was that my Plustek scanner could only handle 35mm film and I really couldn't face the thought of purchasing another scanner in addition to shelling out the cash for MF equipment.

Well, I think I got quite lucky by managing to pick up an Epson 4490 for only £4! Granted, it's not the latest and greatest, but its price/performance ratio just can't be beaten.

At this point, any problems in the scans are most likely due to my metering with an iPhone and using slide film for the first time rather than any shortcomings of the scanner... Anyway, I'm still learning to get the most out of it, but it seems to be performing admirably with my SQ-A thus far:

Thanks, Scott. Yeah, fortunately or unfortunately, I've built up quite a bit of tolerance to these sauces, so I've been needing to buy progressively hotter sauces...

well i went and paid off the new baby today, now ive got 2 months to figure out how to get a sharp picture with it before i go to the Lake District! Never mind cheap film, where can you source cheap Brasso.

Very nice, wait until you see the negatives. Be careful with the Brasso, can do more damage than good.

Yes a very nice Wistafield...enjoy!

Agree with Ed about brasso ......I use equivalent on my LF gear but to be fair the brass has been neglected for donkeys years ( we're talking late 19th early 20th century kit) and the lacquer finish to the brass is no longer there.

Maybe there are some other "less abrasive" types of brass cleaner ....last thing you want to do is ruin your new toy by keeping it polished up.

toothpaste is good if you have a lot of time to spare and don't mind your kit smelling of mint :bonk:

I've just bought myself one of these: Montanus Delmonta :) £17.00 inc delivery :) I plan to put a roll through it, would like to see the outcome, it'll make a good ornament if it doesn't work, has anybody got one? will post a photo when it arrives.
