Nikon Z* mirrorless

I obviously live in the wrong place.
Owls arrive at night and hoot at me from the trees.
Buzzards go overhead and land in trees where I cannot get a clear shot.
Wrens are just too quick and flighty for me.
Nuthatches and others are gone as soon as I spot/see them
Only the robins are considerate and friendly.
I do have a soft spot for the little robins who seem to pose for the camera. I was cutting the grass at the tail end of last year and removed the grass box from the lawnmower to take to the bin and when I turned to go back towards the lawnmower, the robin was sitting on the lawnmower almost waiting for me.

There's a little wren quite often hoping around the grass here but similarly I've found it's very quick to fly away at any noise or movement. There are some sparrowhawks that visit from time to time and I can usually tell due to the sparrows all making a sort of alarm noise, even then the sparrowhawks can be hard to spot as they are so still.

I don’t recall ever reading a bad word about the z mount 70-200, but apparently there’s a new version coming anyway!

Apart from the obvious lighter and smaller aspects of this new lens, the big news has to be, at long last, a Nikon lens natively comes with an arca swiss compatible tripod foot.

Never thought that would happen!
And now perhaps the seas will part and Nikon and Sigma will settle their differences.
I'm interested in the new lens, but when the current one can be had brand new for half the price of this new one... It can't be twice as good.
The 24-70 II came down in price pretty quickly - it was even substantially discounted by Nikon not that long ago - and it will be interesting to see the pricing of this one going forward.
I can't afford to make the change from my MkI, but perhaps within the next 12 months it'll be possible.

Yes I got my NPS mail advertising it today.
Do I need a 70-200mm f2.8 in Z mount? No but with so many second hand ones coming onto the market it might cause temptation.

Had my NPS email about the Mk2 70-200 Z mount and being honest the situations I use my Mk1 for I'll wait a good while before upgrading. For motorsport and when I'm using the Mk1 lens it's always hit the target quick and I'm then tracking the subject before firing some shots off. I do use it on my Z8 exclusively though so I suppose the lighter weight and balance thing with the Mk2 could be a good thing. The Mk2 24-70 Z mount is better when I'm shooting paddock shots as it's very quick to focus and I'm very impressed over the original lens and glad I got it. The price being asked for the Mk2 70-200 is unreal considering what the Mk1 cost but I guess in a few months it'll drop quite a bit.

The 70-200mm Z Mk1 is a fantastic lens. It's going to be a great lens to pick up with the MkII release.
I don't use the 70-200mm that often, so i'll not be upgrading. It'll take a good comparison video to see if the premium for the MkII is worth it.
The Arca implementation looks overly engineered/thought through.

I got my 70-200 F2.8 last year from Panamoz with my Z8. I wont be rushing out to replace it with the new version. I will use it until it's dead. I am 43 and 6 ft 4 and weigh 100 kg...not worried about the lens weighing less, there is enough of me to lug around lol

I don’t know what to say old friend , the zee8 seems to have re-invigorated my mojo must have a few thousand shots not even looked at yet just from this week alone ,only really started using it a week ago . Got shots lined up on my desktop screen ready to post to LOL
It's easy to forget to leave go of the shutter button. I was playing with 30fps on the Z9 and forgot to switch back to 15fps for the rugby. Got home and started downloading the shots and wondered why it was taking so long. Instead of 300-350 shots I had 1265 shots. Watch that shutter finger.

I'm still using an old 70-200 f2.8 if the mk1 70-200 f2.8 Z comes down in price secondhand I might consider changing.

Focus system is the big upgrade in the new 70-200. It was a bit overdue but they finally hit the mark. Pricing is obviously a concern but nothing too different from canon

In fact i wonder if the mark 1 is not actually slower to focus than the last f mount version. This should be the fastest of the lot
You really see the speed when going between close and distant focus points often
I have an extreme lens in this regard - sigma 70mm art macro stm and it can be almost snappy working exclusively over 2-3m range, but mix in closeups and you may be having coffee breaks while it sorts itself out. I am only too happy to see through the end of stm era

Nice set

The gentle touch is all that’s required.. LOL but as an insurance I’ve got the sound generator turned on . Helps to cure silly old sod mishaps

But it's a different design - which I'm not sure I am keen on - the whole ring comes off rather than just the foot - I just got the new version of the 24-70 mainly because I prefer the internal zoom and the weight difference is very welcome - I would probably have gone for the new 70-200 were it not for the fact that I am waiting for the 400 2.8 TC to come back into stock. I couldn't justify the £3k price tag and am still really happy with my mark 1 version (apart from the weight!)

I've not given it much thought beyond the policy shift to using an Arca Swiss mounting plate.

I'm not sure I mind the whole ring coming off, if you are someone who doesn't use a tripod, it maximises the weight saving.

Not that I'm the demographic Nikon is looking at for purchasing a £3k 70-200 lens, but it looks very similar to the foot arrangement on my Olympus 40-150 F2.8 Pro, which again comes off as just one piece and has a sleeve which slides over the exposed pins when it's removed. It's never bothered me on that lens, and doubt (if I ever did own it), it would on this one.

As it's sub 1000 grams in weight with the foot off, and most of the time this would be shot handheld, I think it's actually a benefit rather than a hinderance, as it lightens the lens and makes it more compact (ideal for putting in a full backpack for instance) ?

Anyone on here got the Nikon ZR, and can give some feedback on what it's like to use. Don't know why, but the size and weight of it appeals to me as a walk about body, even though I guess it's primary purpose is to shoot in Red colour format ?

As it doesn't have a viewfinder, can anyone comment on the brightness of the gorgeous huge screen when shooting outside in the Sun ?

Screen is stunning, plenty bright enough even in sunlight.

I bought it primarily for photography due to the size, weight and ergonomics, extremely comfortable, the built in grip is just right, much better than the ZF and not as bulky as a Z6.

40mm & 28mm are a perfect fit but also balances well with the 24-120.

The red raw thing..... it's attracted a lot of video guys that actually haven't got a clue how to use it. I see it as a bonus, the most important thing for video is learning how to colour grade and edit, i'm struggling to find the time tbh.

Some images on my flickr.......

Ah well let’s go look at today’s 600+ LOL

Hello Peeps

I've been out of photography for a little while and have mainly been using my iPhone :(

So I'm thinking of getting a cheap FF camera and have noticed that the Z5 and Z6 are quite cheap now ?

I know they are getting a bit long in the tooth but I shoot in SAF 99% of the time and don't tend to take photos of things that move...

Thanks :)

What did you shoot with before and what are you looking to capture now?

If you don't have any demanding requirements then you're obviously getting great image quality from the large sensor and I wouldn't even say the Z5 or Z6 are that old either. I have a Sony RX1R mk1 which is a FF compact and a bit of a dinosaur in most ways however its image quality is still great so the camera gets some use. I also still have an old Nikon D750 I still use for flash work and again, it can still produce great images.
