Maybe, but I'm sure Nikon would like a lot of DX upgraders, and a lot of them, maybe in the short term, maybe not, may be using DX lenses. I think this is where Nikon have a little bit of advantage over Canon users, in that they have enabled their crop sensor camera users to be able to continue to use their DX lenses on their FX cameras, though with obvious limitations.I think that majority of people who will get the D850 will already be D810 /D750 users.
Whilst with Pro's it is a good idea to have a backup, amateurs may have to sell to fund something new, and may want one camera to do everything they want. If they have a D6/7/8** and a DX camera, maybe even a D500, then you may have to sell to get the D850, and it is good that it could cover most of what whatever two cameras you may already have in one package.
And maybe like I said before, pre-order may not be a guarantee that you will get the camera in the first batch.
