Nikon D800......

I've not tried it with the D800, but I tethered the D90 no problem a few times. A quick look on youtube and google and it seems Lightroom doesn't tether well with the D800, but there are some work-arounds

If you're really eager to do it.

More questions. How do I go about shooting tethered to LR4 with the D800 please.

jeff

Hi Jeff, Connect camera via supplied USB lead, Now go to Lightrooms File Menu > Tethered Capture, and choose Start Tethered Capture, this will bring up a menu where you enter very similar info as you would in the import window. One thing that's different is the Segment Photos By Shots checkbox this lets you organize your shots as you go, it's pretty easy to work out.

Click O.K and the Tethered Capture window appears, if Lightroom sees your camera then it's model name will appear on the left. If it doesn't see your camera then No Camera Detected will appear. If it sees your camera it will display Aperture, Shutter Speed & ISO. The large button to the right of the Tethered Capture window is for firing the shutter if you wish.

When shooting tethered with a D800 your images will go directly to your computers hard drive or wherever you have directed them to go. "They will not be recorded to your memory card as well". I believe some other makes of camera do record to both but not Nikons.

Hope this answers your question.

George.

Upgraded firmware, green tint gone:thumbs: Thanks for the help.

No advise to my last question? 'How do I go about shooting tethered to LR4 with the D800 please.' Any help appreciated, even links to tutorials.

Cheers

jeff

Capture One Pro 7 will do tethered on most Nikons - IQ may be a tad better than LR4.

Thanks George, sounds much simpler than described in the link posted by Keith (Cagey75), I hope your version is right. I'll give it a go.

Cheers

Hi Jeff, It should work as it's exactly the way I set up my D800 and Lightroom 4 for tethered shooting and works for me perfectly. I'd be interested to know your outcome.

George.

Right... looking at these lovely photos, I am ready to buy a D800.. where is the best place to find one?? Seems that the prices have risen lately in the UK.. any guidance is greatly appreciated..

FWIW (and I may well be too late!) mine came from an independent dealer (Devon Camera Centre) and while it may well have been a few quid more expensive than some other places, it came with some decent discount vouchers including one for a grip (which I won't use), some lenses (used the one for the 24-120 f/4 but have everything else I want!) and some other kit which made the DCC a much better deal overall. They're also my local dealer of choice and a source of much of my kit since I prefer to support local businesses when possible - use it or lose it!

I have one, it's perfectly fine. I just prefer not to use it mostly, not a big fan of grips. I got this one just to see how I'd get on after a long time without one. I used to have one for the D90, but think I used it twice. Since buying the one for the D800, I've used it twice :D

But, that's exactly why I bought the 'third party' one. They are not "Fake" as this guy keeps saying, unless they actually claim to be Nikon - they're not fake. Just cheaper alternatives.

I like using grips, I have them on both my D700's. I think I will look into the Meike, they have a growing reputation for quality. £59.51 from Amazon.

£42 on ebay Jeff, i use these guys http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Meike-Vertical-Camera-Battery-Grip-for-Nikon-D800-D800E-MB-D12-MBD12-/330923642213?pt=UK_Camera_Battery_Grips&hash=item4d0c960d65and they ship from the UK so delivery within 3-5 days

If the link dont work (forum issues) drop me a PM and ill email the link

Looks pretty much the same as mine, which is a Pixel grip. I wonder are they one in the same company under different names?

I had a set of Meike AF extension macro tubes and they were grand. Worked great. Just sold them on when I got a dedicated macro lens.

post deleted due to wrong page loading & TP being verrrrry slow.

I find TP pretty quick. You should see how slow some others are, I joined a Fuji forum last week after buying the X100s - takes about a minute at times for a post to submit, for example. Though they have updated the server today, must go see if it's any better ...

[edit] IRONY that took about 20 seconds to submit. Maybe TP are having server issues?

Pricey enough device that. I'd love to have a play with one, see how it works.

What situations are you using it for? Any downsides to it apart from the price?

Mostly landscape and long exposure but I need to have a longer play with it.
It was advertise at the wrong price in the shop and dude let me have it at that price :)

I can see this being great for the landscape photographer, at least in situations where you can set up nice and comfortably. I can imagine you'd want some kind of stand/bracket for your ipad for it though?

From what I've seen, the promo video with Jared Polin, it looked like there was a bit of a delay? So I can't see it being so hot for say, sports.

I'm back....

Love the camera....

Anybody know why my Nikkor 105mm 2.8 G ED VR will only go to f3? The top panel will show f2.8 when first switched on...but in use I can not (in any PASM setting) get an aperture lower than f3...sometimes f3.2

I never had this problem on my d300s.

I can't think what I have set on camera - or lens to cause this..

Anybody got any clues?

Cheers

What Hugh said.

It's a quirk of macro lenses that as you get closer to the subject the aperture changes. Nikons show you the effective aperture, IIRC Canons show you the intended aperture (i.e. the one you dialed in but won't get - they may have changed this). Which is why Nikon forums are full of people asking this questiona and Canon ones aren't ;)

Re D800 tethered to LR. Works beautifully. Just get a decent cable. Those are big files to chuck down a long bit of wire. I usually buy stuff like this at Lindy rather than save a quid or two on the 'bay.

Yup, all macro lenses do this when you're focusing on anything close by, within a couple of meters. focus further afield and it'll hit 2.8.

Thanks guys( all of you)! I dont use the lens that often, but as its FX I stuck it on my new 800 (natch) played around and then WTF?? Looks like I should have known this!! :bonk: Always learning eh :)

The D800 is a beast if you like to crop. There's no camera better, outside of medium format. And they're crap above ISO 400.

Anyone interested in the Sigma 35mm 1.4, good time to buy, you can now get it on amazon UK for £100 less than I paid! ... bah

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00A35X8ZG/ref=pe_186441_37313861_email_1p_0_ti

I'm sure someone will suggest other places that have it cheaper, but some people like the security of amazon, me inc.

Prices of lenses and other photo equipment seem to go up and down sometimes anyway. I've seen it with the cameras, but also with lenses. I bought the Sigma 35mm f1.4 for €768.-, an hour later it cost 758.-, a day later it cost I think €818.- if I remember correctly, and today it costs €848.-. I have no idea how this is possible. But at first I was annoyed at having paid €10.- too much, today I'm glad I bought it last week...

Is the sigma 35 f1.4 a better lens then my Nikon 50f1.4D? I know that my Nikon is razor sharp but will I notice that big a diff on the D800 with Sigma?? Apart from the 15mm?

The Sigma really is a leap forward for them, you shouldn't hesitate to buy it at that price.

By most/all reports yes. the sigma is hailed as being a ridiculously sharp lens, alot more so than most.

Ive been very tempted to sell my 24-70 and buy one, but would need to buy another wider lens also, many the 28 1.8G, But have a feeling i may miss the versatility of the zoom.

How does the 35's focus compare with the 24-70?
