Nikon D750 & D780

Yesterday, I got a chance to test the AF in challenging conditions at a friends's place. One of his fuse blew and we had candles for fun till it was fixed. I saw that as an opportunity.
Conclusion : The D750 did very well. Out of 30-50 shots only in 3-4 occasions, I found the AF locking somewhere else but some of it can be attributed to movement and not using the right AF mode or technique. I am certain my old D610 wouldn't have achieved such a success rate. And once again the performance in tungsten light is way better than D600/610.

I also played with my friends D300s and one thing I immediately noticed is even though it is an old body, the ergonomics are great and fells great in hand. The thing I found better with the D300s is the position of the AF-On button. It is more ergonomic than D750 as with with the D750 you'd have to stretch a bit. I have no idea why Nikon didn't redesign the AF-On to be more close to the thumb rest as it would have been a more natural fit. They got rid of one button and how stupid it is not to place it where the thumb could be positioned with more comfort. is is one thing I wish the D750 had.

Yep, the lack on AF-ON/position of the AEL isn't great and the reason I don't use BBF. I think they're afraid to make the perfect camera for fear of the loss of future sales ;)

That's to make you buy the D810. ;)
I know, living with the some guilt (could have stretched another £500 :D) , but I am happy overall and still think D750 is more than good enough for my needs.

There 's a nice review of D810/D750 and DF high ISO review on web and every time I across that article I see how well the D810 downsampled images stand up against both D750 and DF, but with the added advantage of retaining tremendous detail. I tend to crop images and this is where the D810 would have been great. But, this is a D750 thread so, let's get on witth it. I am happy...:p

See the 2nd sentence of my post above ;) :p

Agree with you, but sometimes I think do they really think like that? placement of a button to differentiate? Canon is better in this respect.

But you never know. Most Nikon Togs say that they did the unthinkable making the D700 the best camera of its time that costed them loss of revenue on D3.

They could could have done 2 versions of D810 one with 24 mpx and charged a bit more than D750...Noooooo why I am still taking about D810

Lol.

I don't know their reasons tbh, I'm sure a lot of it (such as only 1/4000 shutter) is cost cutting/keeping the costs down. AEL button placement on the D750 though? Not sure on this one.

Nikon has a clear range at different price points, if you want the d810 options, get the D810, if you want the D750 options get a D750 etc etc. its called choice, not lets bundle a camera together and only offer 1 at a (very) high price that we think will satisfy everyone.

Well I'd settle for one that just bundles the features I want :p

I don't get this either and asked the same question. Some people are just secretive and just say "what does it matter, it's all about the tog not the camera etc etc", some people do it to remove location for whatever reason, and some do it by accident ;)
Ive always strip the EXIF out of my pics, it stems from shooting pitchside and wiring to papers who need a small file size so i always shot Jpeg and used "save for web" which gave me the best control over file size to get it to 500kb

Are these Samyang lens M focus only?

Yes! Had to put my lens on and set lens to f22 on aperture ring for the camera to register the lens! Can change aperture in camera now though somehow!!!! Not quite sure what's going on but trying to find more out about it

Completely normal, nikons older lenses are like that.

What's the going rate in the UK for an excellent condition D750, boxed with warranty etc?

One has just sold in the classifieds for £915.

Champion. So the second body I pick up tomorrow at £860 looks a good deal! ;)

I've got to drive to Dubai to pick it up but I could do with a look out..

Staying Nikon! Thought for a moment you going back to full Fuji

Fuji was an enjoyable experiment but for work I really do feel like DSLRs suit me better. It's like part of me and I can shoot without thinking whereas the XT1 I was constantly fiddling about..

That said, I've still got the X100T and a couple very good lenses waiting to see what happens with the XPro2.

I know where you are coming from. I am so used to the D800 and now the D750 it just feels solid for work where I'm not fussed about the size of the kit and being hidden. Get in, shoot and get the results :)

The XPro2 early next year sounds good but I have decided not to invest in another system and stick to anything with a fixed lens setup to avoid the Nikon gathering dust when not shooting.

I've got stuff that I don't use but that's because I listened to other people and bought gear that suited them.

I'm really hoping to get into family portraits, engagements and weddings and stick with a very simple two prime lens combo. If that works out I'll sack off the events/conference stuff I've been shooting and move on the 24-70/70-200 2.8 combo.

My photography seems to take a real knock when I'm fretting over gear.. "should I take this, no that, no everything... just in case" :(

Which 2 primes will you go for Adam?

I've already got the siggy 35mm 1.4 and nikon 85mm 1.8G which are both great lenses.

Sometimes I do feel a bit cramped and see myself heading a bit wider with a 24 or 28 and the 58mm 1.4 which is amazing IMO.

I'll stick with 35/85 for now though and see how the business goes.

I'm very tempted with a prime setup too but the 24-70 is just such a good lens it would be hard to let it go. :/

I think it depends what and how you prefer to shoot. For me, whilst the 24-70 is versatile it gives me more to think about that I could do without.

The more is use the prime combo the more I "see" that way. Even though I've got to move my legs I seem to work much quicker with primes too.

My ultimate set up would be a couple of D750s and 24 1.4 / 58 1.4 combo.
