Nikon D5xxx Owners Thread

You set the pre to the colour of the snow (orange) you need to set it to white. Or you could use the built in white balance options for shooting under sodium lights ;)

Snow was white last time I checked? Sorry, but I don't understand what you mean. If everything is lit orange, where do I find anything white?

My D5000 doesn't have a preset for sodium. I tried tungsten but it didn't help.

Thanks

Afternoon all,

I can now say i am a member of the D5000 club after being bought body only at christmas after months of having to borrow my work one for personal use. Having used the D5000 at work i am fairly ok with most of the functions. I am now trying to work out what lens to get as an all rounder while i start learning the more creative side of photography.

I am currently borrowing the 18-70mm lens from my work camera and have been temped to go with the same however i have also found lots of interesting reviews about the D90 kit lens (18-105mm) which apart from the plastic mount concerning me slightly appears to be a good all rounder.
I have also now found reviews and recomendations for the 16-85mm as a good all rounder (although more expensive) and i am not sure which way to go... save up more and get the 16-85, the cheaper plastic option of the 18-105, or stay with my first plan and find a 18-70???

Being new to all this i am not sure what type of photography I will do more of hence the all rounder. I have so far enjoyed some landscape, close up and dabbled at portrait (not very good any any yet though)

Very confused so a bit of advice would of great help

Hello Nikki,

All three are great lenses to start off with.
The 18-105 will take great pics but the only downside is the plastickiness of it. The weak point on a lens is where it attaches to the camera....and as you correctly say it has a plastic lens mount.
The 16-85 is a wonderful lens but rather pricy at the moment because its not supplied as part of a kit. Second-hand ones are few and far between amd they tend to hold their price well.
The 18-70 was the kit lens with the D70 (IIRC). I'm slightly biased here as its the one I have for my D5000. Its a little faster than the 18-105, having a max aperture of f/3.5 (like the 16-85). Its very well made, having the metal mount and the body construction seems to be way better than the 18-105 too. Nice and sharp across all the way through the focal length. Its also an absolute bargain to get a used one (not sure they are made any more)....currently good boxed ones go for around £75 on ebay. It also makes a very nice pairing with the 70-300VR when you are in the market for a longer zoom.
Hope that helps a little,

Neil

I have had none of the Nikon lenses you note but reading here this past year or so .....

the 18-70 gets orgasmic comments from it's users
however , due to this.?, the eBay price has risen above Neils £75 - unless you're lucky
the 18-105 has had some 'soft' comments
the 16-85 is far too expensive

the sleeper.?....a Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 DC Macro HSM [ie auto-focus]
i got mine from Derek here £160 IIRC [ he soon replaced it.. with another]

I am well impressed....

ps
seem to recall a similar question, and Graham [Flash in the Pan] recommended a Tamron

a 17-50mm i think

here's a comparison..."link"

Crikey! Just had a quick look at eBay.....and yes they have shot up in price. There is one there for 99 buy it now which Is pretty good.........

Thanks for the help John and Neil.
Have just been browsing ebay and the 18-70 is probably going to be the one. The 16-85 will be out of my price range for a long while and the plastic mount of the 18-105 worrys me too much. Besides if the 18-70 is getting orgasmic comments as John says then it makes sense to go with the good reviews as well.

Thanks again,

Off to spend my christmas money now...

I lost count the amount of auctions i watched where my highest bid of £90 got sailed past and the 18-70s kept going for £130! I held tight and got one for £77 in the end with a Jessops UV Filter and its sound. It has everything with it bar the hood. I cant comment on the others as i havnt tried them but from what ive heard its between the 18-70 and the 16-85. Jessops were responsible for the price crash i think as they were doing the 18-70 for half price at £150. It isnt even on their site now. Why is the 16-85 so much more?
Phil

have you considered the 'basic' 18-55mm AF-S IIs VR....£120 NEW at Parks

new = warranty and no 'dodgy' eBay sharks

Ken Rockwell "review"

reportedly a cracking budget lens..............

hey guys, i've been really getting to know my d5000 for the past month or two. In fact, i've been reading / learning a lot more than shooting, which may not be the best method but i can't seem to help myself at the moment! New years resolution #1 is to shoot more!

Any way, i've been having some issues with back button focusing, and i was wondering if anyone would mind taking the time to glance at this thread:

(particularly post #21) thanks.

hey guys, i've been really getting to know my d5000 for the past month or two. I.

Just a quick hello to the D5000 club!! :)

just a note...................

the Nikon manual with the D5000 is bewildering to say the least

have a look at getting the D5000 Guide by David Busch from Amazon
lotsa reading but very explanatory

Can't remember if I posted in this thread...but hello anyway ... I have a D70 and a D5000. I still use the D70 a lot, but I have to say I prefer the D5000 for its sheer comfortableness (is that a word?) The D5000 also made me use manual focus for the first time as 2 of my lens wont AF on the D5000 body (didnt realise this till after I'd bought it) Got to say it opened up a whole new and enjoyable experience for me and rekindled my interest in photography.

Ken Rokwells review of the 18-105 here:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18-105mm.htm#perf

Its an OK lens, he seems to think . . . ?

18-55 and 50mm here:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/10-best.htm

I use the 18-70, I sold a whole load of lenses earlier this year the 18-70 I kept! Great lens IMHO. Rockwell seems to think the 18-55 might have the edge . . . and with a plastic mount???? Its very light if that is an issue . . . but does not quite have the FL or that bit extra aperture speed. The 18-70, tougher built mount, a tad faster glass with IQ to boot . . . but no VR, cant have everything

Personal point, the 18-55 is horrible to manual focus, focus ring is a nasty thin edge on the end of the lens . . . just IMHO.

Hello D5000 owners club!

I have been thinking of buying a D5000 sometime in the future, as my first DSLR for my sports photos, would this be a good camera for my first DSLR?

It looks to get some fantastic reviews.

I think it's a great first DSLR (it's my first!).

But I would suggest going to a shop and handling it and others in your price range. For example; I found the Sony's too small for my hands, and the Nikon was slightly heavier than the Canon (although this didn't sway me in the end).

You may also want to consider a 2nd hand D90 instead - the D90 has a bigger viewfinder and higher-res screen, plus an in-body lens motor and a 'top-plate' LCD. The D5000 has the same sensor and AF system as the D90, and better video capability.

wow didnt know there was a d5000 owner thread, well hello from me :) im sure ill be visiting this thread often!

I got a D5000 on Saturday after having a D3000 for a year. I really like it, but need to get used to having live view again. is there a separate focusing mode for live view or not?

Hi,

Thanks, I hadn't realised some of the menus had sub-menus :)

I'm still confused why setting it manually didn't work though. Any ideas?

not sure tbh, although i think snow, in the dark and under flourecent lamps, might not betrue white

You might need to wait a while before checking it out again

This is a great thread. Im a newbie on these boards but plan on becoming more active.

I upgraded from a D40 to a D5000, looking to move the D40 and my 55-200mm and get a 18-200mm for convenience. Ive had the D5000 for about a moth now but not been able to shoot too much. First impressions are fantastic though, its a huge step-up from the D40 in every aspect. I wanted to stretch for the D90 but did not have the funds at the time.

1... me too

2.. have another look at your idea of a 200mm....I got one here and to be honest it has not been used EVER...:shake:

anything out at 200mm is so much better at 300mm IMHO

My logic behind it was after a month shooting around Italy, I got mega peeved at having to change the lens every 5/10 minutes for a wide/zoom shot. I know I'll compromise a bit on IQ, but it is to be expected with such a range. The alternative is to pick up a x-70mm lens and accompany it with Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED.

I can pick up a Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-S DX reasonably cheap, <£100 used, but the lack of VR is a slight concern as I primarily shoot freehand. I do have a decent tripod but it only goes out for specific shots.

I primarily shoot architecture shots but I do like to shoot anything that takes my fancy. Truth of the matter is I won't be shooting loads until May-ish due too time constraints but plan on going pretty nuts after that. It's massively addictive.

I have the 18-200, and although it's obviously not as sharp as a 300 prime, it's definitely worth the convenience when travelling as far as I'm concerned. As you say, don't want to be changing every few minutes, so unless you can afford 2 bodies, I think it's a worthwhile lens to own.

Don't worry about the lack of VR on the 18-70......its really not necessary at those focal lengths. For the D5000 this and the 70-300 VR are the perfect two lenses.....not stupidly expensive and far better than average IQ. I got rid of a Tamron 18-270 to get my two lenses. Not too much wrong with IQ but it was so so slow to focus.....it made shooting in anything but bright daylight nigh on impossible. I'm sure the Nikon will be better, but still not as good as the two shorter range rooms.

Neil

Not tried the Nikkor 55-300mm but recently picked up the Tamron 70-300mm.

Took this last night, hand held. I think it's pretty good for hand held and my first ever moon shot.

f.5.6
1/500sec
Iso 200
300mm
Spot metered

Not bad. I left my camera at work last night and was so annoyed with myself. The moon was so clear and big, would have been perfect!

Hello, can anone help?
I have just received a replacement D5000 body for one which didnt like cold weather! (Appeared to take pictures but recorded nothing, and also had a black screen in live view mode when faulty).
I have recorded some video on the new one and can see an obvious rolling effect from the bottom of the picture to the top. It looks like a strange lighting effect but not sure if its a common fault or another dodgey body from Jessops.
Any comments appreciated.
Ken

I have had the rolling image problem, it mainly happens when indoors using artifical lighting. I think it's just the way it's designed.

Thanks for that, I feel slighty better that its not my new body.
Great pic of the moon by the way, just been watching it rise on my way home from Peterborough. Now I get home and its clouded over, Typical!

i know you all dont often look in the Film sections...but should anyone fancy a 30 year old Nippon Kogaku 50mm f2 lens [works in manual mode on the D5000] ..have a look at the Film Classifieds

''hope this is allowed..:rules:....john

hi folks joined a couple of weeks ago and just realised not even posted on my own camera's list.
had my D5000 for nearly a year now. its a great camera with the capability to do everything i want and ask plus more.
i got it with kit lens and a tamron 70-300 but since have added a nikor 18-105vr this is the lens i use the most. bag wise i got myself a lowepro slingshot 100 fots all 3 lenses and camera plus room for spare battery and charger along a few extra bits.
over xmas i got a blackrapid r4 sling strap and boy is it a big improvement over the neck strap. no more neck ache after a day out. camera hangs by your side ready for use.
looking at getting a flash gun(have been looking at the nikon sb700)and also looking towards a 35mm afs lens too or a macro lens. will look at putting pics up. in the meantime here is my flckr pagehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/wildhouse/
regards martin

thanks. it was taken at our local duck feeding spot.ogden water park in halifax.
was walking back to car with grandson when i noticed the mist between the tree's luckily i had camera with me. i had been trying out new black rapid strap i got for xmas :)

Ive recently tried to use this function on my D5000 to take some star trail shots but for some reason the camera is only taking 3 shots rather than the amount ive entered. I have used my remote to take 120 30 second exposures stright after so its not a card issue. Ive repeated this process in the house just minutes ago and its still doing the same. Ive tried setting the file to JPEG rather than the initial RAW setting to no avail. I know i can put the camera in burst mode and lock my remote shutter and just time one hour for example but i still would like to know why its not working. Also is it possible to lock the shutter release in camera? I cant see any such setting. I have been using my MC-36 copy remote but if i set 1 second intervals the camera hasnt recovered quick enough and misses every other shot so i had to put 2 second intervals.
ANy ideas?? Its nothing to do with Bracketing settings btw as theyre defo set to off.
Thanks in advance, Phil
