Nikon D5xxx Owners Thread

prob the best choice...

doubt if any more new to be found...?....
best refurbished was here at £180
"Camera World"

Just had a quick squint at the Camera World page . . . they have it wrong!! its an f3.5 to f4.5 considerably faster than f5.6 they show.

The 18-70 has a 67mm filter thread, is IMHO a super lens, punching well above its weight, at under £100 from EBy, its a bargain. It would be interesting to see a comparison review against the faster f2.8 Siggy . . .

in-depth review of the Sigma "here"

I have indeed looked at getting a 18-70mm - but there have been reports of vignetting at 18mm which put me off

review "bythom"
"on almost every performance parameter this is an excellent lens. The lone exception is vignetting. "

overall a very positive review but, landscapes being my thing, I went for the Sigma at 17mm

Yes....I read Hogans review aswell. I must say though, I use mine at 18mm most of the time and have never seen even the faintest evidence of vignetting in a years use. Can't find fault with this lens to be honest.

Heres a few taken with mine. They Baltic one is an HDr that said.

fish-eye is interesting................;)

I like the avenue of trees - did a similar one myself [yellow walk post] and got lotsa good advice about PP

am a bit concerned about the flare in Baltic......:shake:
looks as if the sun is behind the building - did you use a filter..?

you said the 18-70mm came with a Jessops filter - try taking some without the filter mounted - don't know where Jessops sources from, but it ain't no Hoya Pro..!

Hi mate, as you say the sun was a right pain that day as it was very low and killed most of the photos i took that day. It was off to the right at around 45 degrees on that photo.
The Jessops filter was on and as you say they arent Hoya but are still around £28 i believe. Its the one that came with the lens and is basically on there to protect. Ive got a few quid to spend so a hoya could be in the frame. Do you mean UV or Polariser?
I'll check out the yellow walk post.... do you have a link?
Phil:)

45degs..? well flare could be lack of lens hood..do you use one.?

lotsa discussions here about filter "probs" indicate it's better to have no filter at all and use a lens hood for protection
I'm a bit wary of that idea - the front element of my Sigma 17-70 is exposed - and so bought a Marumi DHG Protector slim-line
you dont need a UV pre se as the sensor already has a UV screen

yours is a 52mm filter so "here" - the Super DHG range is better - too expensive for me at 72mm though

I also bought a 72mm DHG PL-C polariser which is super for landscapes - very thin so doesn't vignette - have to be careful at 17mm though as it can
affect only a section of the overall sky scene

if you do go Hoya - read through Hoppy's ad-hoc testing of filters
seems the Hoya HD is the very best

This is the only lens that i dont have a hood for as thats how i bought it. I have a hood for my 55-200 and the 35mm prime which i think will fit my 18-55 kit lens but i must get one as i think youve hit the nail on the head. I think its the HB32... i'll either get an authentic one or a copy off Ebay. Thanks for the links for the filters also. I have some decisions to make now.:)
Liking the yellow walk photos! The one i posted is 1 side of a double row of trees.
MoorPath.jpg

It used to be a road in Newcastle before the central motorway was built but is now just a throughway near the town moor.

Anyhoo, ive been messing with the 35mm f1,8......

Hi Chrizzy.....

The 70-300 of choice is the Nikon 70-300VR, about £450 new or £300 used.
Sigma do two versions, the one to go for being the 'apochromatic' or 'apo' version...its around the £170 ish mark and doesnt have the optical stability system like the Nikon.
Tamron has just release a 70-300VC, the VC meaning 'vibration compensation'. I'm afraid I have no experience of this one as its so new, but the price is around the same as the NIkon.

As to the Nikon one....fantastic lens. Quick to focus and sharp at pretty much tha whole focal range. Well built and obviously has the high quality Nikon optics. Very happy with mine anyway!

@ jedipie.......I'm jealous!!!!:p

Neil

is there a place in london where i can try lots of lens?

Hi Chrizzy....

Whereabouts in London are you?
If West London, then try Chiswick Camera Centre.

Guys, ive sorted my welding glass but after doing the WB Pre set i decided to rename the file that i used to #9 WB Set. The problem is now when i put the card in the camera i cant find the file! Its defo still on the card but has moved to the beginning...... I have a Nikon D5000. I did want to save a preset or atleast rename 3 images for shade 9, 10 & 11 for future reference.
Any help would be appreciated.
Phil

on some posts I've discussed mounting a Nikon pre-Ai lens on a D5000
as a cheap way of having a quality Nikon manual lens

.......................no longer for sale

You can see this in the exif data, not sure if it's in the camera menu tbh, but never looked

Hello all :D contemplating purchasing B+W ND 10 stop filter to go with my D5000, does anyone have any experience shooting with this type filter, iam after tips please, i have read all kinds ie use with live view to compose the shot, use bulb mode etc etc the list gos on.

OK guys, its serious business time, been talking to Stuart at Digital Depot . . . I will be 'soon' morphing into a D90 or more likely a D7000. So I will be out of the D5000 club, I'll keep abreast of the goings on thought . . .

Keep you eye open on the classified thread, a D5000 with less than '600 clicks' on the clock! . . . been a bad year for picture taking . . .

Its all about retiring, get kit right whilst I have the money . . . I know, a fancy camera wont make me a better tog . . . something to aim at though, and I certainly wont be able to blame the tools:lol:

I am also in the market for a 10 stop. A few people are mentioning the Heliopan 10 stop over the B & W from what ive read on here. Theyre both the same sort of price and i was gonna go for the Lee Big Stopper but the price goes nuts when you add the kit and adapters etc. Youre talking £170 approx!

Ive had a play with welding glass which is around 12 stops and loved it. Have you considered trying that 1st? £1 for a shade 9, £4 for a step up ring, £2 for some blu tac and some sparkies ape and your laughing!
Heres a few of mine.

Perhaps a daft question but ive just been reading Ken Rockwells user guide for the D5000 and under the White Balance section he refers to accessing a fine tuning menu by clicking to the right. But I cant dseem to do this, what am I doing wrong?

"Warm/Cool (Amber/blue) and Green/Magenta bias

Once you've selected a WB setting in this menu, click right and you'll get into a colorful White Balance fine-tuning menu! Use the rear multi-controller to set any color bias you want.

The D5000 is awesome in that you can set different biases for each WB setting"

Play.com do a Hahnel remote shutter release for £15.98 with free delivery.
It hasnt got the built in timer or screen......

Don't think I've used my camera for at least a month, been too busy! :( If I get enough cash after Xmas I want a 35mm lens though, where's the best place to buy one from? I think Jessops was doing them on offer not that long ago but they've gone back up now.

Still forsale at jessops for £159, you have to do it by reserve and collect via their website though to get it at that price. I got mine from there 2 weeks ago. I think instore they're £169.

Guys ive just received my MC-36 copy remote and i have to say it looks the nuts! Ive been told its identical to the Nikon version but i only paid £19 compared to £140 for the original. I'll let you all know how it is in action.

Yesterday evening, I went out in the sodium, street lit snow to take some photos of the kids building a snowman. I went into the WB and PRE menu and clicked OK aiming it at the orange snow.

Didn't work though, photos still came out sodium coloured. Anyone know why this didn't work? Is there a limit to how far it will go off to set the WB?

Thanks
