Nikon D5xxx Owners Thread

Hey guys certified newbie here, my first post.

I got my D5000 2 months ago and I'm loving it.
I'm a graphic designer and recently got into photography to expand my skills.

This camera is great. I got a really good deal on it on ebay, it came with a telephoto lens too.

I hope I can learn a lot of techniques from you guys here.

Thanks and have a great day!

Hi Kabizm, i have the ML-L3 (albeit a copy) but its excellent and only £3.70! I paid £3 but its went up a tad in price.
Heres the link to the one i have.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Remote-Contro...eNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ht_2109wt_1139
Now as we speak im doing a little test for you...... the shutter can be triggered from behind but only from approx 45 degrees. It works from right behind upto 3 metres away at which point i ran out of living room. Ive took about 30 shots so it wasnt a fluke.
Hope this helps, Phil

Cheers Phil. I think i might buy both, get the cheap ML-l2 copy and get MC-DC2 so that i've got the flexibility of both!

Sounds like a plan but im afraid i havnt tried the MC-DC2. Thing is it aint cheap. Maybe buy the ML-L3 copy and then decide on that as i think you'll find you wont need both.

Well, I've just splashed out on a grip from ukpartsdeal (as recommended by Bigvin), which does make a huge difference to the way the camera feels to hold. I was also very naughty and bought a 70-300mm lens, which is quite an impressive piece of kit.

Sadly the weather has been a bit too dull over the last couple of days, so I've not had too much opportunity to really test the lens, but I did manage a few shots on Wednesday after work. The results from which can be found towards the end of this folder: http://stevek47.smugmug.com/Landscapes/Various-Views-of-London/14088630_6Dfjc

The obvious starting shot is the close-up of the Post Office Tower on page 3! ;)

I'm hoping I'll get an opportunity for some more practice tomorrow, if the weather isn't too grim.

I've posted three images to my gallery:
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/data/500/IMGP0202.JPG
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/data/500/IMGP0203.JPG
http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/gallery/data/500/IMGP0199.JPG

The thing that's sticking out in a couple of the images is the IR sensor, which removes the need for cables between the grip and the camera.

Hope that helps?

Hi, New here and I am looking for a new bag just like this - How did you get it for £16 - great bargain,

Also looking for a nice Zoom lens - looking through the posts I think I need to raid the piggy bank as there are some fab photo's to be had.

Enjoying the web site, lots of great advice and all very informal - love it!!

Could someone please tell me what the advantages of this grip are?

For me, it makes the camera slightly more comfortable to grip, especially if I'm holding it vertically for portrait type pictures. It holds two batteries, so that you don't have to change them so often.

There is a slight downside, insofar that it obviously makes the camera heavier, which is especially noticeable if you have a big zoom lens.

Thats great Steve. Its some size innit! Am i right in thinking you could also just take the batteries as spares with you on an outing if you wanted so you had 3?

Awesome buy!
Oh, heres a quick view of a few photos i took on Saturday with the Samyang Fisheye and the 18-70 i bought recently...

Loving both. The Samyang seems versatile as it seems to do landscapes without much distortion whereas when your very close things bend....alot!

Yes Phil ... it comes with two batteries that would fit the D5000, plus an adaptor should you want to use AA sized batteries.

I see....ok... So what happens to the battery flap, do you have to take that off or does it slot onto the side. Sorry for my ignorance just trying to get my head around things lol

I use a battery grip and as I shoot Rugby/Football it is a godsend. As I use long heavy lenses it has brought a balance to the camera and it feels more comfortable.

As for the battery door it does come off and can be reattached as well. At first it seems that it wont come off and a lot of people were worried that they would break the door when taking it off, but just open the door and keep pulling it back like your trying to open it even more and it will release itself. With my grip it slots into the battery grip so if I decide to no longer use the grip then I can replace the door.

raise the battery flap about 30degrees, and twist sideways....stores in grip usually

Morn'g Martin
but just open the door and keep pulling it back like your trying to open it even more

this reads like you open the flap 90deg and keep going
I 'think' it comes out better only open 30degrees......................

anyone who bought David Busch book on the D5000 may have read the section about 'firmware' updates..page 317

my camera has firmware...as his page 322
A = v 1.00
B = v 1.00
L = v 1.001

he says ' no upgrades available at time of writing book' and cannot find any at the Nikon support site

anyone got anything different...................

You can actually look straight up and see the trees 360 which is wierd!

Hi Chrizzy.....

The 70-300 of choice is the Nikon 70-300VR, about £450 new or £300 used.
Sigma do two versions, the one to go for being the 'apochromatic' or 'apo' version...its around the £170 ish mark and doesnt have the optical stability system like the Nikon.
Tamron has just release a 70-300VC, the VC meaning 'vibration compensation'. I'm afraid I have no experience of this one as its so new, but the price is around the same as the NIkon.

As to the Nikon one....fantastic lens. Quick to focus and sharp at pretty much tha whole focal range. Well built and obviously has the high quality Nikon optics. Very happy with mine anyway!

@ jedipie.......I'm jealous!!!!:p

Hmm....birthday at the end of the month and I'm thinking 50mm! Like the look of the f1.4AF-S....nice fast bit of glass. BUT......(there is ALWAYS a 'but' in photography!:D)....do I go for the Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8 AF-S??? Can this be used for general shots as well as the macro stuff?? Choices choices eh...:cuckoo:

Neil

.
Micro-Nikkor 60mm f2.8 AF-S

from my limited reading it appears the 60mm gets TOO close to the subject

and 100/105mm is preferred

Speaking of lenses ive just bought the f1,8 35mm Prime lens:D
Phil

Nice one Phil, how much and where from? I've got my eye on this for indoor shots of the family, suppose to be a fast lens?

Sweet, wish I had a missus like yours!

Have you put any photos up yet that you've taken with it?

Hi all. I am new here and looking to buy a new lens. After searching this thread I think my best option is the 70-300VR which everyone seems to rave about.

I have looked on EBAY and just wanted to confirm I am looking at the right lens before I press the BUY button.

I am looking at something like :http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-AF-S-70-300mm-F4-5-5-6G-VR-ED-AF-Zoom-Lens-/300485515120?pt=UK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_CameraLensesFilters_JN&hash=item45f6551770

Just wanted a second opinion please

Cheers

Well I have looked at more and more posts and still lost - I am now getting swayed to the 18-105MM option as so many rave about it or maybe the 55-200MM!!

- Which is the best all round lens?

I Would like to get into a bit of landscape photography but not so sure about swapping the lens as I like just taking snaps of my kids while we are out walking.

to many choices - not enough cash :'(

well landscapes need to be down at the 17mm end
"snaps of kids" wont need massive zoom - so why not the 18-105..??

OR...........Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 HSM [for AF on a D5000]....like what I got

awesome lens..IMO...."review"

prob the best choice...

the filter size of my Sigma is 72mm
the cost of a Marumi Protector [ front element is a tad exposed]
and cost of a Marumi Polariser was a bit 'high'

doubt if any more new to be found...?....
best refurbished was here at £180
