Nikon D5xxx Owners Thread

Is this the ball head? Can you open the screen properly and turn it around?
It is mate and yeh, all is good on the opening front! Its veryu good qual infact. When you view the tripod it recommends the head and a remote. I just removed the remote and boufght. Its around the same price or £1 cheaper on Play but you can only del to your billing addy which is just no use to me!:D
Infact i tell a lie mate, you cant turn the screen so that it faces you if you wanted to take a portrait of yourself but you can rotate it from closed to open an it will go in the sideways position. IMO it can move to the pos you would use with a tripod.

Hi all- i'm new to this forum and was pointed to this thread by AFC.

Had my D5000 since last october and have to say i've only used a few times in the time
i've owned it, mainky when i've been away on holiday but now i've got the photography bug.

Was wondering whether anyone had done a stop-motion movie using their D5000? i've seen a few posted on youtube.

It looks like you need to take a hell of a load of photos to get a decent clip!

would like to see your movies to give me some inspiration.

Cheers
Keef

I tried it once, as I could see a storm approaching. Had to stop taking shots though as the rain got a bit heavy on the window and it was too dark.

Caution!!!!
I have one of these ball heads, the spirit level stops the screen from dropping down or swiveling freely. Solution; a junior hacksaw and cut it off! Its poorly mounted anyway? . . . was on mine.

I use the 'KOOD BN-02BQ ball head' on my tripod and mono pod, turn it back to front (release catch forward) it is perfect.

Wahey!!! A D5000 thread, nice one!

I'm off to pick up my 35mm f1.8 today from Jessops, Redhill. Can't wait as all the images i have seen from this lens look great. Should do well on my D5000.

Good luck, it took me a while to nail focusing at f1.8, and i'm still not perfect, it's lovely and sharp at f2.8 :)

OK, I have a Manual Focus question.

I have a 50mm f1.4 Carl Zeiss Manual focus lens. In order to use it I have to put the camera into M mode which is fine although not as easy as canon (A mode).

When using an AF-S lens in M (manual) mode you get the exposure bar appear so you know when the shot is perfectly exposed. With manual lenses there is no exposure bar. Is there a way to turn it on when using Manual lenses whether new ones like the Zeiss or really old ones.

Thanks

Sorry but what do you mean by "it took me a while to nail focusing at f1.8, and I'm still not perfect"

It's a auto focus lens so why the problem? If what i want in focus is not in the middle of the view finder I either change focus points or focus on the bit I want in focus then re compose while holding the shutter button half way down.

Simples! :D

Nikon Manual page 156

rubbish explanation
"Rangefinder "on"....whether correctly focussed in manual focus mode

...then they say "not available in "M"........

I have activated 'Rangefinder ON' but still nothing appears!!?!?

I should rephrase it, what I meant was that at first using single af point, I would get the persons nose in focus and eyes out of focus, or the other way round. In the end I just stepped the aperture down a bit to give more dof.

It only works in "M" ;) Either set it on the lens or in the camera menus

I can't set exposure on the lens. All I want is the exposure bar on camera while in M mode with manual focus only lenses. so when i have set the aperture on the lens the bar will indicate the right exposure when i fiddle with the shutter speed.

You need a CPU lens for the exposure indicator to work. I'm assuming that a manual focus lens does not have a CPU?

Correct. Ok so it's suck finger and point in the air time :D :D :D

One thing doing it this way is that it teaches you how to do all this properly!

I too definitely have some problems focusing at f/1.8 with this lens... I put it down to inexperience! I've started to stop it down a little and results definitely improve... but I bought it specifically for low light shots, so more practice needed for me at f/1.8!

The D5000 won't meter with non CPU M/F lenses. You need a D200 and upwards for that luxury. Big pain in the ass if you want to use M42 lenses ,old Nikon Ai lenses and the like. You will just need to guess and use the histogram.

OK so how do you get the histogram on screen when taking a shot (non CPU MF Lens) I have looked in the book but can't find anything??

Link Delight are now listed a battery grip for a D5000

I have a Hahnel and cannot comment on theirs....."link"

Press the up arrow when in preview mode

OK so there's no 'live' histogram when composing a shot, only after a shot has been taken?

I don't mind if that's the case, I just like to know what I need to do.

I have only had the camera just over a week and I'm really falling for it. The IQ is superb and it's such a well made bit of kit that's a joy to use.

I got their grip through fleabay, had no problems with it, works a treat. Just have to be aware of the link wire when getting in/out of the bag

I got my grip from Ukpartsdeal on fleabay. It comes with two batteries, which seem to last longer than the original ones. It also doesn't have the link cable. It uses the Infrared setting to trigger the camera.Link

Why did I have to read this lol. My samyang fisheye arrived today. :)

What's it like then?

Have you managed to have a play yet?

Stick some pics up.

Just got home mate but it looks beautiful! I had a quick peak with the cap off but just quick as i work in a dirty environment, or atleast one you dont wanna be opening new lenses in! Is it wrong to think it looks beautiful? haha
Joking aside its very well made and the aperture ring etc have a nice clicking movment. I'll get some pics up when i get the chance.....

I'm toying with the idea of getting a grip at some point. What's this one like? And how easy was it to remove the battery cover on the D5000? I'm a bit concerned that I may end up being ham-fisted and breaking it if I tried. :bonk:

battery cover was easy to remove, hold it at 45 degrees and pull off, keep it handy though ;)

Ive had a play and its class! I forgot to change to jpeg so im busy converting in LR3.
RE the battery grip whats the quality like Vin? Ive bought from the same seller before and theyve been spot on. Even if you didnt use the handle surely the batteries are worth the money if theyre as good as the Nikon?
Hmm... im bloody gutted as i missed out on a 18-70 f3,5-4,5 AF-S lens earlier due my my lack of EBAy auction experience :bang: It was a package with 2 HOYA filters, 1 a CPL and 1 a UV. Went for £131.

I won one last week for £82!! Can't wait to get it and try it out!

The lens looks nice Phil but the photos just don't do it for me though, maybe I will change my mind with some outside shots?

They have been out of stock for months as I was wanting to order from there. Play said they were in stock so ordered and then they weren't!! :bang: So cancelled that and went with Amazon, got an email yesterday saying it will be arriving next week :)

I was watching that as well but went for more than I wanted to spend. When you get one are you selling the kit lens?

Aye, i value the lens at about that but the filters were worth more than the lens! One was a Hoya CPL which is £100 on camera warehouse and the other, a hoya UV was around £20.

Its a marmite thing i suppose a bit like HDR. I'll get myself in to the city centre and see what i can do......
If i buy another lens i should sell the kit.....but i hardly ever sell stuff:lol: Im liking the look of the bag youve just bought but ive literally just bought mine! :cuckoo: Im in 2 minds tbh and am considering a prime 50 mm f1.4 or the 35 mm f1.8. Infact i noticed phil in this thread has the 35mm so maybe you coud chuck up some pics phil?;):D

Sorry, do you mean me for the 35mm? I have it, it's a cracker but only used it for basketball. Great lens though

Well to look at it, it looks exactly the same as John's Link

Don't worry about being ham-fisted. If ever someone was going to break it, it would be me. :D

Take your time and it just slides out at 45 degrees. There is a compartment in the grip to put your battery cover so you can go back to a single battery setup whenever you want.
