Wow, well seeing as I've had so many nice comments and visits to my little thread in only a few days I thought I'd better add some proper spiel here!

About me
My name's Nick - don't ask about the surname because it really is ridiculous!. I've had my DSLR(s) since November 2008 - a nice little Olympus E420. In August I sold the E420 and bought a Canon 500D. Since buying the 500D I've bought a 5D Mark II - nothing like jumping in with both feet eh!
I'm still really finding my feet with what I'm going to 'specialise' in - but I'm drawn towards landscapes as a primary love. I'm also getting more into 'people' photography. I was petrified of it at first but it's actually quit fun!

Why am I doing this 52?
Well, when I started my photography journey last year I was really crap. On a forum I was on there was a photography subforum, and in there they did weekly themed competitions. I found that by doing these my photography skills improved vastly - I even managed to win a couple of weeks. My particular high point was taking a photo for the challenge (which didn't even get a vote in the competition ) which I later submitted to the BBC for a 'readers pictures' feature. Not only was it used, but it was also used as the lead image for the feature, and was recently used again to promote the top 12 readers pics of the year (it's the Beetle pic)!

For reasons of my own I no longer want to participate in the challenges on that forum, but I need some 'inspiration' to get me thinking about my photography and trying stuff I wouldn't necessarily think to have a go at - hopefully with the aim of improving myself further.

The 52 on this forum is the perfect excuse I need to get out taking photos again. I look forward to not only contributing my own photos to this project, but also hopefully giving a bit of advice and constructive feedback to the others taking on this challenge.
I'll try and comment on as many as possible, but there are so many people taking part this year that I may accidentally miss some out. It's not personal, honest!.

My rules
I'm going to stick to the normal rules. I don't want to set myself too stringent a task so I fall out of love with the challenge, but do want to have some sort of structure to it!

Thanks for reading, and thanks for visiting my thread

Well done for joining up Nick. How hard can it be

Well, seeing as I thought this weeks would be easy and I'm already struggling without resorting to going to the local theatre (called 'The Curve'), or heading off to Selfridges I'm already looking for the 'delete thread' button

Right - well, here's my Week 1 entry (unless I really hit some inspiration and decide to change it)...

Well, the glass is curved isn't it ;)

lovely shot

i dunno if i could even keep up with the weekly comp :)

nice start
wonder if the shot would be more dramatic with a faster shutter speed to freeze the wine

Thanks - You'll be fine once you get going :)

Thanks!
Quite possibly - however at 1/200th I was already at the limit of the flash triggers :( One really nice version of the shot has a lovely bit of shutter curtain in it

Incidentally - that's a small sherry glass, with some red food-coloured water being poured into it from a pyrex measuring jug... I wasn't going to waste any vino on the shot - that's far more valuable being poured down my throat!

Nice shot glad to hear no wine was wasted while making this photo ;)

That would have been an interesting hot in your mouth with the wine pouring in

Hmm - maybe next time ;)

Nice photo's, lots of light, Shapes in the glass. Pleased to hear the wine went to a good place after.

Cheers

Right - well, here's my Week 1 entry

Good grief, you're quick off the mark. I like it, though similarly feel it might be better a little more 'frozen' and it isn't as sharp as I'd like... the glass looks a little OoF.

I love the shot, but I have a problem. I think you have just revealed my OCD, OCD which I wasn't aware I had. The wine drop on the side of the glass, it actually makes me uncomfortable. I want to mop it off and the frustration of not being able to is killing me. Gargh!!!.

Wine glasses are the way forwards this week :D

Appreciate the crit
I may have another play around with the scene - it's still all set up at the moment. I think the problem with the glass was having a relatively large aperture using my Sigma 105 macro.
Not sure how I could up the shutter speed to freeze it any more though - save for using some form of constant lighting instead of the flash...

Heh - I did actually have another one without the drop on it - but when I compared them side by side I actually thought the drop added a bit to the shot - I suspect it will be a marmite thing though :D

If it frustrates you that much you have my permission to import the photo into photoshop and clone it out ;)

aha
if you're using flash, then forget the shutter speed - the flash will freeze it
maybe it's just a touch OOF

be very interested to see it with a smaller aperture :)

i like that , love the colour of the wine , and like the drop on the side of the glass looks great :)

hehe, not at all, I agree with you that the drop adds interest to the shot if not makes the shot, and I love it as is, I just can't look at it for more than 2 seconds :(

I like it but would have preferred it to be more messy :)

Setting the standard straight away there Nick, love the colour and the drip.

Love the lighting of this one.

Have to say I find the drop on the outside of the glass a little distracting as well, sorry.

I was thinking of a wine glass shot and looking for the curviest wine bottle I could get hold of.

People keep stealing my thoughts :suspect: :lol::lol:

I still have a couple of ideas left though ;)

Thank you - it's just a white sheet with a 430EXII fired straight through it (at around 1/16th power) from directly behind the glass :)

Like I say though - it's only a sherry glass, so the wine glass & bottle combo are still open for you to take  :D

Thanks Nick but I think I've decided what to take now.

Depends on the weather when I'm off work next week. In the meantime I'll keep an eye on other poeples threads and comment on them.

Here's hoping I can keep up to the standard being set by you and others so far

Andy

Great start Nick, I really like the idea and it works well but on my monitor I lose the left hand side of the glass, a piece of black card on the left hand side out of shot would have corrected it. Just my opinion of course.

Edit.
By the way I really like the drip of wine on the outside of the glass.

Great shot. And as to the drop on the side, I think it adds to the picture.

Ian.

Hi Nick. Good to see another new face in the 52s

That's a good start to the year, and I see that you had a similar idea to me for curved. You've done well to get the glass to stand out against the white background - although the LHS is getting lost a bit on my monitor too.

I like the movement in the wine and I also quite like the drip on the side of the glass. It adds a bit of extra interest.

Wish I did found myself wandering around with the camera this afternoon getting highly frustrated and freezing !!!!!

Has anyone ever failed on week 1 LOL

Ideas Please.

Ooh look! I'm onto page two already!

Great shot. And as to the drop on the side, I think it adds to the picture.

Thanks Ian

Hi Sarah,
Good to be involved in one!
Thanks for your comments - I'm trying to get round to visiting everyone elses thread - but there appear to be so many this year I'm finding it tough keeping up! :(

I like this shot Nick, nice clean crisp edge on the glass and vibrant colours

So - this week we're doing 'Poems / Poetry' then? :help:

I think this one is going to have to use a bit of creative licence!

According to dictionary.com...

po⋅em  /ˈpoʊəm/ [poh-uhm]

–noun 1. a composition in verse, esp. one that is characterized by a highly developed artistic form and by the use of heightened language and rhythm to express an intensely imaginative interpretation of the subject.
2. composition that, though not in verse, is characterized by great beauty of language or expression: a prose poem from the Scriptures; a symphonic poem.
3. something having qualities that are suggestive of or likened to those of poetry: Marcel, that chicken cacciatore was an absolute poem.

Looks like I may have to resort to definition 3 and come up with a corker of a shot that can be likened to poetry!

Thankfully, my 17-40L turned up this morning - I wonder where this one's going!

Hi there,
I really like this picture, love the lighting and the choice of a white background, it's a nice contrast with the red. And I love the drip on the glass - that makes the picture for me

Missed this one so far. Nice strong colour and the drip is either well set up or a happy accident. Liking a lot
