Nick T's 52 for 2010 - Week 26 - Beginnings on page 16

Been waiting for this since you said you had a plan.

This is definately CHOPPED/SHOPPED, great idea well executed with high PP skills(much higher than mine anyway)

Get well soon....... WEEK 4 TOMORROW

Oh yes - I always come up with a plan. It's normally the execution (ooh, punnage!) that lets me down

Oh, this is really gruesome. The area looks just perfect for this kind of shot and it's definitely very "out of the box"! This is probably the most unique take on this week's theme.

Jenny

Thank you very much Jenny. Yes, there are plenty of places in Barwell where I could have gone for the 'just been decapitated' look

Great PP'ing. I especially like what you've done with the colour. Gives it more interest in an area that looks like the colours could easily be grey and washed out :)

Thanks Rich. Was a combination of various Nik Color Efex filters. A cross processing layer, followed by a hue/sat adjustment to take the colour out of my face, and some of the blue out of the jeans, then a gritty b&w filter over the top with a low opacity just to take some vibrance out and add a bit more texture. :)

Really like the gritty processing on your 'Chopped' shot, has a very ominous feel to it but I'm not so keen on the head for some reason, it seems out of place ... perhaps just the way it is sitting.. not sure what exactly it is though sorry. Damn fine pic though.

Tommy.

Cheers Tommy - I know exactly what you mean about the head. Despite that being the exact place my head was when I took the photo it does look out of place. I think what I needed to do was take something like a box just to lay my head on, so that there was more neck available to 'chop' which probably would have made it look a bit more 'realistic'. It's really not easy to get your head flat on the floor

Great work again Nick. Like you said the head isn't quite right. Maybe if you'd laid on your back it might have made a difference. Of course I must have inspired you to take the theme this way so I take most of the credit. Ha ha ha, kidding. Can't wait for week four now.

nice idea, but i think it would of been better with the head near the body, and a different angle on it, so you can see the chopped neck

really do like the processing on the photo though

Very interesting take on the subject and very gruesome. Your mind must work a bit like mine ( see my chopped post). I really like your photo and processing but agree that the head would have been better next to the body.

Cheers chap . The only thing with lying on my back is that it may have looked better, but it's not how I think a severed head would come to rest - it's much more likely to have rolled onto its side... (honestly - never seen a severed head before - but it's what I assume )

Hmm - had never thought about having the head near the body - thanks for the suggestion (I may well try it) and comments re: the processing

Sweet idea and nice execution (if you'll pardon the pun). The processing really adds to the impact of the image.

Rob

Hmmm - I think we need warning for this one! The head is not quite right but personally I'm glad it is not too realistic!:D I like the colours.

I know the head doesn't look as good as it should

Which is a shame as it's a great idea. I think doing it in the wood could be the answer as leaves/soil/debris would give you the opportunity to hide joins and mask things to get the shot 100% in camera.

It's a cracking idea Nick and I really like the treatment on it. I don't have a problem with the positioning of body/head, adds to the humour of it :) Slight shame about the processing on the head but look forward to the reshoot.

Good point - I've changed the thread title now

Can we keep this thread on topic and stop giving this attention seeker free bumps. :D:D:D

Well at least I have a real comment this time!
And with a title warning about "headlessness", I predict that this will get quite a few views

I also reckon that you got some funny looks setting this shot up.
 It's worked really well . . . you're right that the head isn't quite right, but still a brilliant idea and well executed (excuse the pun)

Wow Nick, thats a bit severe(d),but it appeals to me.Nice processing....Mick

Thanks Sarah - funnily enough it's getting less comments now I've put the disclaimer up - time to remove it methinks
Fortunately the location was fairly secluded and I had my wife with me for protection  so I got away without any weird looks (except from the wife who was laughing her head off ;))

Cheers Mick!

So, week 4 is 'Street'. Please don't expect much from me on this one - I am in no way a confident person - certainly not enough to go pointing my lenses at strangers :(

am with you on the street theme.. not brave enough.. eek!!

love your chopped one, very different.. like the gritty feel to it.. agree the head might have been better a bit closer to your body but still.. a great shout!

Apart from what has already been pointed out I really like this interpretation of the theme. The only thing that's missing is a pool of blood around the neck :D

As for Street, I used to feel scared witless when I first tried it but now it doesn't bother me

But joining this challenge is all about challenging yourself so take a deep breath and go for it!

Well done Nick... all the comments have been made... it's gruesome and works... the head does look a little odd.. Well done for an imaginative take

Have to say I like "Chopped". Kudos on you for getting out to take the shot, and for taking the time to PP it properly.

I do think the head on a stump/body in foliage would have been an ideal choice, but understand the reasoning. Out in the rain when you have a cold is miserable.

Hope you're feeling better now.

Ian.

Cheers Ian - still not feeling perfect, but better than last week!

Which brings me on to week 4, Street.

I really apologise for this one - I've had such a hectic week. For some reason two people have booked me for weddings, another is likely, I've had a portrait shoot booked and all day yesterday was spent taking photos at a charity event (you can see a couple of shots here) meaning I didn't get to get out.

So - here's a throwaway photo, just to show that I at least made the effort to take a new photo this week... I call it

Just to prove I have done 'street' in the past though, here's one I took last year during Barwell carnival - this one's called Street Life

Sorry to anyone who has this thread subscribed - I'll try and make up for it next week :)

FINALLY :D Glad to here you've been busy with your gear. Looking forward to your weddings :cuckoo: ;).
Nice use of a triptych :suspect:, last years street shot is a cracker.

Nick, that's brilliant, simple and clever. One of my favourites of the week so far

Might feel like a throwaway shot but 'it's the way that you tell em' or in this case, the way that you take em :clap:

And last year's shot is spot on , very gritty and I love the PP.

One of my favorites so far.
I wish I could produce 'throwaways' of that quality.

Yeah - I must be mad to start taking wedding bookings (after being so adamant I'd never do it!). Still, it can contribute to some of the kit I want :D

Cheers for the comments mate :)

Thanks you guys - I'm really surprised by your reactions - I really don't think much to this weeks picture myself but just wanted to get something done. :notworthy:

My original thought for this week: I'm a biker - I have a Suzuki GSR. This bike is officially classed by Suzuki as a 'Street Bike'. I also have a camera bracket which can be mounted onto the fuel tank with a few rivets. I was going to set the camera up (not sure if the 5DII or 500D) on the bracket, go for a little ride and get some semi-long exposures going on (you know the sort - sharp bike, nice blurry streets).
The other alternative was to set up some sort of rig on the bike for a proper rig shot style photo. But I neither had the time nor the equipment to do this one.

Thanks for your comments - they're always appreciated.

I really think that you're playing down your street shot Nick.
It might have been "quick and easy" for you, but there's something really interesting about it. It works for me

I don't think that any one of those shots on its own would have stood out, but the way that they're set out in the tripych with the different backgrounds really makes it.
I like the use of vignetting and PP to tie them all together too.

I'll pop over and have a look at your charity shoot a bit later - good to see that you're keeping busy.

I agree entirely about there not being a standout shot - which is why when I was thinking about what to do I chose three local streets (Stanley, Mill and High) and decided to triptych them :)
Regarding PP and vignetting - Nik Silver Efex Pro is great :D

I don't think it's a throwaway shot at all - I really like it :) it's very effective and works well as a triptych. Also, your shot from last year is fab too!

Thanks Briony - I really admire your work so coming from you it's a big compliment :)

Really like the 'Streets have no name' triptych. Wish my throwaway shots looked like this

I'm afraid the triptych doesn't do anything for me but your shot from last year is a corker!:clap:

Very nicely done Nick last years photo is a corker, trip isn't a throw away by any means. great stuff

I do like the streets have no names image, good thinking well done

Hey Nick, great work so far, love poetry and chopped.
week 4 shots are great, i like your take on streets have no name, very clever and well executed

Good work again there Nick.

Thanks everyone :) If I've not already, I'll stop by your threads this eve and have a comment :)

Finally! Someone who thinks the same as me! Thanks for the comments :)

Well the triptych does work for me, and I'm with Sarah on the vignetting.

Good to see you're busy with work.

Ian.

hit and miss for me on the triptych.. like the PP and the title works very well but... hmm, cant put my finger on it..

great candid shot of the fellas at the carnival.. they look some characters! the B+W conversion is perfect here

You've come up with the goods again Nick, it works really well and I just love the one of your 3 brothers in the back garden:thumbs:...Mick

For a throwaway that's excellent. Well done Nick. The one of the 3 against the wall is also excellent...
