New modern car advancements ,likes and dislikes.

Speaking of winter tyres, the Michelin Crossclimate are looking candidates for the next set rubber I put on a car. Get good reviews, and no messing about if we decide to take the ferry for a trip to Germany in that grey area period where winter tyres are legally required when the conditions warrant.

A friend has a set on his Golf and swears by them. Father in law has just put some on - very quiet and excellent grip. Kind of looking forward to the crappy weather coming so can see how they perform...

I hope he is not in the UK  Normally you don't put them on unless the weather is consistently below 7 degrees. He'll wear them out if he has them on already.

Go read up on 'em before commenting.. ;)

Edit: they're an all-weather, all-year tyre - not specifically a winter tyre but meet the winter tyre rules for most European countries that have them..

Thank you for the edit and explanation, I thought the reference by andryd was to winter tyres  I'm not a fan off all-season tyres at all; to me they are average all round. I guess it all depends on what vehicle you drive and what demands it makes on the tyres in the first place.

It started out as winter tyres, then I steered it onto the crossclimates. The reviews of them are universally positive.

Although I admit they're probably not something a performance car driver is going to choose, but not many family car drivers are likely to fit Yokohama A048s either :D

I think autonomous cars will be akin to winter tyres, safer if a majority is using them, but potentially more likely to be in an accident if only you are.
Not everyone needs winter tyres, we rarely get much snow or ice in this part of Essex. Hopefully not everyone will require an autonomous car neither.

I've driven regularly through a frozen ford in winter months, as well as the occasional smattering of snow in a RWD auto that has a more than healthy dose of horsepower, on summer tyres and it's never been a problem. Obviously, I adapt my driving style to suit the conditions - and I probably wouldn't recommend it in hilly terrain. The auto gearbox has a snow mode too which seems quite effective.

I used to ride a bike in fairly hefty snow (cycling from the Peak District into Manchester) using studded tyres which would grip anything. I recally using a dedicated cycle pharcility which gave cycle traffic priority over a junction. I stopped, yet 3/4 cyclists carried on. A driver ploughed into them - he approached the junction too quickly, braked hard and the wheels on the car just locked up under braking. Even with ABS in those conditions, you have to allow for the fact the ABS system will extend the braking distance when it kicks in.

Autonomous cars at least, should be able to account for these conditions and start slowing down well in advance of junctions/fixed hazards.

I drove 3.0L capris (RWD for those that don't know are very tail happy in the wet, let alone snow and ice) for years and during that time endured some heavy snowfalls,
I'd always get to my destination, often passing small FWD vehicles that were snow bound or barely moving along the way.
Its all about the driver and technique (y)

This.I've never had winter tyres and never had any problems in the rare event that we get more than a few mm of snow for more than a few hours. Seen plenty of 4WDs having problems though, people seem to think that 4WD means they can drive them like they would on a dry sunny day.

And that is more than enough to send the country into turmoil ! I mean, seriously?

Seen plenty of 4WDs having problems though,
Same here ( and yes I drive one for work and yes it does go off road, great fun :) )

That is a hell of a lot of optional extras. A lot of them were standard on my Focus. (y)
I'm intrigued to know what man made leather is.

:) I like my toys not all are cost options, it is dependent on the model. Most came standard but as mine is build in Affalterbach I think they list a number as factory options whilst on this model they are standard.

The Artico man-made leather is actually really nice. In the three years we've had our GL nobody ever questioned the leather, it is very hard wearing consider the horses, dogs, children. It is also lighter. In combination with the AMG seats they look amazing. And no animals were killed :)

You might want to go and read up on the CrossClimates, they are a pretty unique tyre that excels in summer and winter.

Here's one review to start with:

Downsides of modern tech.. 1/3rd of the dash in the Picasso is LCD, a PITA when you prefer to wear polarised shades for driving in the summer.

No denying the good reviews  One thing I note is that they test on small lower powered cars, and seem to compare to energy saver plus tyres. I guess from that that it is not yet ready for the primetime. They also don't do it in my size either ;)

Crikey you are generous, ideally they should be towed in a designated `box`, but fair play to you. (y)

Can I ask, what is ; +513 Traffic Sign Assist

As we've got that in our current X166 :) The front facing camera is connected via a wireless personal area network. The imagery that is streamed is scanned for roadsigns and the overhead boards. It then analysis it and combines it with the on board warning system. For example the satnav compares it to actual speed and warns if you go over. The center display between theach dials shows a digital image, and the heads up display projects it on the windscreen. With distatronic it can also regulate the speed of the vehicle.

It should be noted that this time I do not have the distatronic nor HUD as my wife never used it and I don't drive it enough. If it was my daily I probably would.

I do like how the signs are rexpected. Especially handy around London with the variable speed motorways.

As should all children (y)

As with all these add ons, just something else for those that can't drive and have to rely on all these gadgets :p
No excuses are necessary when you are a proper man and like gadgets. Just because well they are gadgets :)

Can't wait to look on my phone in the lounge and see my tyre pressure or how full my tank it or where I parked it. It was only small price to pay and proper gadget.

I can do that, I look out the window and see if one is soft (y)

I do that before I switch off the engine (y)

Memory going is it? :p
Gadget gadget gadget :p

Oh and a button to open the exhaust flaps. I wonder whether the on board camera can time it such that it will do that at bus stops with old ladies and young children. Oh and when passing Isuzu pickup trucks :)

I was in local Audi dealership with an R8 that had one on steering wheel - miserable b****r wouldn't start it up and let me have a play.

Said, fine, won't buy the car then and walked away ;) - pretty sure he didn't believe me :LOL:

Crikey, never heard of such things before. :wacky:

I bought a Samsung Galaxy J5 a few weeks back. It keeps telling me where I parked my car and how long it will take me to get home. No idea how or why.
I also have sign recognition. It works via optic orbs and a bit of grey matter.

Simple. You likely have it connected via Bluetooth. It simply saves the last known location when it disconnects from the Bluetooth. If it doesn't it's the Ford magic dust.

Regarding the orbs and grey matyer; Me thinks you don't understand the concept of a gadget :p

I don't use the Bluetooth, It's nothing to do with the car, the phone is doing it all by itself. The only thing I understand of the concept of gadgets is people become lazy and too reliant on them. I prefer doing most things for myself. Keeps the mind and body active. (y)

I don't get that why some dealers behave like that. Sytner went out of its way. No actually they didn't, it felt normal. I wanted to hear this engine in a C43 AMG that I saw in the showroom. They tried to start but it wouldn't. The booster pack also didn't work. So they gave me a car for a test drive whilst they sorted it. The testdrive car didn't pass the PDI that morning, but they fixed it quickly. And that was the backstop model which I hoped would be good enough but was too sluggish for my liking. So I declined. Then listened to another C43 with some more miles as I thought the new one was too tinny sounding. And for fun the new c63 Coupe. Nothing seem to be a problem or hard. All just nice and smooth. End result we worked out a deal an I bought a car. Three days later got the build date and delivery confirmed.
It was a pleasure and fun experience as it should be.

Hmm interesting in that case it's the Ford magic dust. I mean how else does it know where you car is ;)

Ps. Seriously it can still be Bluetooth. You can pick it up without pairing. It's a technique also used for queue management to track the mac address through several sensors. That way you know how quick people are moving in a queue.
Pps Your like doing it by yourself. There is a name for that :) :p

I think it is something to do with Google Maps. It uses that to show me where the car is, but how it knows I have left the car in the car park and walked into work confuses me. I haven't entered anything into the phone to determine where home is, but when I am at work it likes to tell me where the car is parked and how long it will take me to get home. It hasn't as far as I'm aware told me wher ethe car is when I'm at home, or how long it would take me to get to work.

Doing it yourself is supposed to be good for the prostrate. ;)

I just explained how it can do that ;) Thereally are other techniques to determine your home location without entering anything. Welcome to my world ;)

Ps. So are tomatoes.

Google Now cards does that. It works out your travel patterns from your position and speed history, and uses the statistics to predict what you are going to do next. And will provide traffic, flight or weather reports in advance. So if you drive a similar route every day it's easy.
https://www.google.com/search/about/learn-more/now/
It will also know any music preference and give you sports results or concert appointment reminders based on what it has detected you doing on the phone or in the content of Gmail. If it spotted a flight booking, it displays a weather report at that destination.

It's been around for several years, so Apple are likely to announce it soon.

It is another method of doing it, but not the only one. I've implemented the afore mentioned systems. The Mercedes system is slightly different again and actually pro-actively communicating with you mobile device to utilise the onboard GPS data.

There is nothing to copy about as this technology and methods have been employed for commercial and government purposes for many many years.

That sounds like it, I'd been listening to Marillion on my tablet recently and then a message popped up on my phone telling me Marillion have a new album. (y)

Mine work in mist and fog, Sunday morning was foggy on the way to work, all I had to do was put the fog lights on in the thicker patches.
