Yes
Just heard he passed away tonight.

Truly devastating news. May he rest in peace.

If I'm honest, I'm surprised he's last this long given his health in recent months. Still, a tragic loss.
RIP

Sad to hear the news. A truly wonderful human being.

he was 95 or so , so its not a massive surprise

Sorry Nick, but what exactly is devastating about his death?

The man inspired millions and millions of people. It is always devastating when the truly inspirational ones pass on, regardless of how old he was. We probably won't agree on the man and this is not the thread for that discussion.

RIP Nelson.

Reactions: den
One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. I'll remember him for his role in bringing peace and reconciliation to South Africa. I have no idea if he ever directly killed anyone or if anyone died as a result of his actions in early life, I do know there are hundreds, maybe thousands alive today and millions more living in peace as a result of his actions and example in later life

not really, the issue in Israel is religion not skin colour - its a total red herring in mourning the passing of Nelson Mandela, and offensive to try to make the linkage (and why single out particularly Israel rather than any of the other countries where one ethnic group persecutes another)

I think he was a decent enough person who after 27 years in prison wasn't bitter and twisted in (probably) the way most of us would be in those circumstances. He wasn't a saint either, but no doubt some of the comments in the coming days would have you believe so. Like you I'm not convinced that the Israeli point is valid, but I don't find it offensive but just another viewpoint in a discussion.

However... and somewhat off topic, I do think that we should have a sub forum of out of focus where we could discuss politics and religion  without impinging on the rest of the forum. It could be quite interesting!

Intersting is an understatement ;)

Its very sad he's dead. Like him or not he had a massive influence on politics for large parts of my life

you're not kidding. We could just name it ban club 'cause thats all it'd turn into

yes despite being in deep norfolkshire we have TV and internet here... thanks for the news.

I'm of to make some popcorn before this descends into politics.

Political and religious discussions have a tendency to go down hill fast, and the resulting animosity then spills over into other discussions. We don't want a situation where we'd have to come in swinging BanHammers, when it's so much easier to just avoid the situation.
Feel free to make the suggestion via Contact Us, but don't hold your breath.

It's a mad mad world when there is such a massive outpouring of grief for a murdering terrorist :( ....who went on to inspire millions....

Agree, now we will have a week of papers filled with 'how great he was'. For some reason though he has iconic status.

I understand that, but would also like to see this section. It should be clearly highlighted as a no holds barred area and enter at own risk. We are all adults, and if you are offended easily then don't enter!

It would spill over

I can see it now

You've blown the whites on that blue tit's cheeks you SNP beep

There's no place for that on TP, it's why the no politics/religion rule exists n the 1st place.

Why is it that a post to mourn the death of someone turns so quickly into viewpoints and politics and the wrongs and right. Have we forgotten how to be mournful and respectful when someone dies and prefer to engage in debating aspects of their life we never actually saw.

RIP Nelson Mandela.

As others have said, whatever your thoughts on him, many many people believed in him and followed him through momentous times. An inspirational man to many, and I include myself in that number.

Because the politics is the only reason his death is discussed on a public forum. If people were to post "RIP" in 'respect' for everyone who died, regardless of what they did in their life - the forum would crash in a couple of hours with the thousands of people who die every day.

Threads are not placed for everyone that dies so unlikely that crash would ever occur. For the few that are posted (politicians, sports people, other forum members etc), its not much to ask for the old fashioned value of respect.

That's my point. The threads are posted because they were public figures - ie people who's lives and actions were discussed by the general public. So, the thread is posted as a continuing part of that. It's not like you're suddenly not allowed to talk about people once they die.

I wasn't trying to take it off topic and I do have respect for Mandella. But every aspect should be open for discussion. And do you know... I suspect he'd agree.

Ture, though out of basic respect you don't normally do it on the day and particularly only a few hours after they die.

The man was made remarkable by somebody, somebody who went against his own people, somebody who had death threats on a daily basis, somebody who was a bigger hero than Mandela.

The Mandela story is legend, but without one man it would have been nothing.

Frederik Willem de Klerk..A true legend.

I feel bad for starting this thread now but I guess somebody else would have.

I feel worse about the fact my 13 year old daughter (Hannah) asked me who Nelson Mandela is.

She has ME (that's why we're up late) but she's learning something thanks to the BBC.

There is mixed feelings but as mentioned the guy was 95 for Christ`s sake, how long did you expect him to live for? Imho " devastating " was not really an appropriate word to describe his death.

For you clearly not, for others quite possibly yes.

I just wonder when the last time anybody really gave him a thought before his death, my guess is a bloody long time ago. That really shows what peoples feelings are about anything in this world ;)

because he was old he doesnt matter?

You said that Neil, not me. In fact I would say it probaly makes more people aware of what he was about, especially for the younger generation. One thing I do not do is come over all caring all of a sudden just because. Yes it is sad for his family and if it effects other people thats fine, he fought for a cause which I had no arguement with but I was hardly what you would call a follower. You just have to look at the headlines on the news. " The World is in mourning ". With the millions of refugees in the world and those that are struggling to stay alive my guess is they do not even know about his death, or if they do I would guess they have too much on their minds to worry too much about it.

It might if it were the case but since it's just your opinion with no way for you to actually know how accurate it is, it's really pretty pointless. /winkysmilie
