he did more for equality worldwide than a lot of other people, i think the headline (albeit maybe a bit OTT like the media do) is justified.

he was responsible for the deaths of innocent men women and children a lot more than a lot of other people... but thats OK because he went on to inspire a nation...

No doubt he has inspired a lot of people, but, and it's a big but, he is responsible for many many deaths, including his own people in Soweto and he never renounced violence or apologised for his previous acts or terrorism (he would have been released a lot sooner if he had). Some of his 'friends' leading other countries would not be on your Christmas card list either. Just wish the media would make a lot less of it really but that ain't going to happen.

i am fully aware of the reasons why he ended up in prison.

im also aware that he started with peaceful protest but was met with harsh opposition/violence.

sure, maybe not the best way to go about things but sometimes fighting fire with fire is necessary. in the long term he probably saved many many more lives than were lost in his early days.

im not saying its right but thats the way it is.

Political and religious discussions have a tendency to go down hill fast, and the resulting animosity then spills over into other discussions. We don't want a situation where we'd have to come in swinging BanHammers, when it's so much easier to just avoid the situation.
Feel free to make the suggestion via Contact Us, but don't hold your breath.

For goodness sake, don't ever let politics and religion be a part of this forum. I've seen it on another Tog forum and it definitely does spill over into other sections and it would ruin the ambiance of TP if it were ever allowed.

What exactly are you trying to say? I said that " I doubt if many had given him any thought recently ", you picked up on that and try to tell me different. The fact remains that I doubt very much that the majority of people who are splattering messages about on here, farcebook or elswhere have thought about him in the last few years. So to me it makes it all hypocritical, take it or leave it I am not that bothered either way tbh.

Well, Mandela brought about a change which most people (in the Western world) would agree was a major positive move. It was a big thing, it was a hard thing, it was won by political protest and armed struggle.

Radical political change of this type was never going to be achieved purely peacefully - if you imagine different you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

I see a lot of people are talking about the subsequent mess, well thats also true too.

None of this in my mind overshadows his role as the leader who brought an end to apartheid in SA.

Lastly, "not talking about politics"... always makes me laugh, people who say that don't know really what politics means, politics is the debate of differing opinions of the world around you. I'm always reminded of this campaign (which was too increase voter participation, but its equally wider than that):
