A lovely portrait. Not too sure about the background (PP job?) which looks a bit patchy, nothing that couldn't be fixed though. Did you have to bribe her to sit still?

thanks.. its actually in my bathroom and the back of my airing cupboard door.. still the nice gaudy blue it was when I moved in ;) she's not a happy model thats for sure.. I used an action in elements which adds a slight vignette so guess that accounts for the background.. I kinda like it though so didnt take it off ;)

Ahhh! another face from the Manchester meet. Thats a lovely picture of your daughter, is she a willing model or do you have to bribe? :D

Did you see the thread in the Meeting forum about the lake district meet should be fun, there's a few faces you will know.

thanks for comments all..

she's not willing.. but didnt have to resort to bribery.. did have other shots I preferred but she said no! - is that the camping meet?.. you're all insane camping in this weather ;)

was going to use this.. but decided against it.. might as well offer it up for opinion :)

lovely photo of your daughter.

The Nokia image - the people are not clear enough for me, not sure you needed them, I think it woudl fit the theme without them !

thanks.. thats the reason I didnt go with it initially, love the colours but think theres just a bit too much blur in the figures..

love te colours although I too think there is too much movement in the people

I really like the Nokia shot! The portrait of your daughter is really good although the background wants some tweaking.

Hi Michelle,

Not been back for a couple of weeks to my shame, but when I caught up and saw Speed, I was kicking myself for missing the thread.

You lit that shot really well. Love the reflection and composition. The colours on teh car vs the black background also work well.

Of your people shots, I think the portrait stands out. The lighting is excellent, and I think the background's OK, but there looks like a light behind her head to the right of her left eye. It's a bit distracting, but would like to hear how you lit this. Also, the right cheek looks a little blown to me, but is that the effect you were after? (/niggle)

It is a really good portrait though and one you should be proud of.

Ian.

thanks for comments guys.. :)

ian, its mainly natural light in my bathroom and I used my little SB-400 flash.. I processed it using an action on elements called 'drama' and toned it down a bit to get the effect I wanted.. it made her skin softer and paler and darkened the rest.. it also adds a slight vignette, again I toned that down as it was quite bold.. I like the background, have done a version with a smooth one and think this is better.. IMO ;)

A lovely portrait Michelle, I like the background. Not sure on the other shot... as you say, too much blur in the people.

What a lovely portrait - you should be very proud both of your daughter and yourself for getting such a good shot. I really like the background, though I might be inclined to tone down a little the highlight behind her left ear.

:clap::clap:

I'd stick with the pic of Nat... much nicer to look at than some highstreet shop. :)

Week 8: Mechanical

as others work got in the way of photography plans this week, did intend to go out today but after a bad night at work I only ventured as far as the garage :)

Excellent image. Interest all the way through from the subject to the background. Composition, lighting and processing are spot on. Top marks

All of which goes to show that we don't actually need to go far to get good images, if you ask me.

I like the composition of this and I like the stark green contrasted against the industrial colouring of everything else.

thanks for comments all, quite pleased with this one for a spur of the moment 'help' what can I do shot..

great image, really like the lighting,

just out of interest, what lighting did you use?

it was in my garage, natural light with the door closed slightly to cast shadows.. used shutter priority and a 2 sec exposure.. shone an LED light around the oil can and bolts to highlight them..

PP, used a texture overlayed with a slight vignette to give a gritty feel to it also..

really well shot, i like the green against the rust and brown tones

Nicely processed shot, the processing suits the image well.

I like that, it's nicely composed and I really like the contrasting tones :)

Really well put together, lighting an processing make this a great shot!

:agree:... Very nicely done Michelle

Really digging this, Michelle! The grittiness and strong colour make it stand out. Looks a bit oil painting like.

And you should be. It's a nice contrasty, punchy image of the sort I really like.

Well done!

Ian.

Brilliant stuff, I coul look at this for ages, so much detail, how'd you do it !!? :)

thanks :)

thanks rob.. this is the original

put a texture layer over the top and adjusted the opacity, erased the texture on the oil can and bolts etc.. added a vignette.. usual tweaks on clarity, contrast etc..

Great work, Michelle - it's interesting seeing the original too - start with a simple composition with good lighting and colours & then really develop it into a cracking image - well done!

Phil

Sorry Mich - missed your people week.
I have to agree with your self critique on the Nokia shot. The shop and scene is well lit and well composed, but the people are just a bit too dark and blurred.

The portrait is a completely different matter though - spot on for the theme.
Portraits are not my thing, but I think you've caught something special here. Definitely captured your daughter's personality, nice eye contact and well lit. I'm not completely convinced about the background, but I certainly don't hate it either.

Mechanical : Very well shot and thank you for sharing the original. It was a good shot to start with, but the PP has really made it.
In fact I keep scrolling back for another look.

I really like this shot and your processing is excellent . I'd love to see it a bit bigger - you can go up to 800px on the long side here.

Personally I'd crop out a bit of the left to remove a (to me) distracting highlight, and then maybe a little off the top to get back to the original pleasing dimensions.
