METEOR SHOWER!!

ok, after clouding over I've had a few vinos so can't drive- and now the sky is completely clear!!! Will try from the garden as is pitch black here!

We've got thunder now! I might set the camera up in the hope of getting lightning lol.

Pretty much clear here, I saw a good one but camera was pointing in the other direction! Wish I had something wider than the 24-70 on full frame!

I captured my first one last night with my 3rd frame! Been an hour tonight and not grabbed one!

quick question: 35mm 1.8 wide open or 18-55mm 5.6??

I'd say 18, as wide angle as you can go... whack up the iso and go for 30sec shutter speed

I've just been out for a nosey and it's cloudy which is a shame as it's pitch black around here.

Well it stayed clouded over but I did get some consolation shots including this one!

I have never photographed lightning before and this was just so exciting! I had a real blast and it more than made up for not being able to capture the Perseids!

In a field,
It's dark,
It's raining,
I can hear drunk people some where,
And its started to rain.

Sounds like loads of fun ;)

I've given up, the clouds up here are just too thick. Will try again tomorrow night.

Mate that is amazing, how did you get that?? Continuous burst? How did you expose for it?

Looks fab Rico, just got home after doing a large lap around the midnight ****ed village kids.

Rico that is incredible! well down. ive tried for lightening before but hardly ever! get fork up here its always sheet.

Matt no even Continuous would be no where near fast enough to catch lightening. its just the same way as for stars, long exposure. 30 secs or more then any lighting shows up as this.

Once again rico Well Done!!

WOW that is stunning

Something I've never managed to capture yet.............

Blimmin cloudy down south too last night. Saw one Perseid but that was it :(

So that's where the rumbles I heard were coming from :D
Never saw any flashes, but sound travels a long way!
Really cool piccy

Just had a thunderhead pass directly overhead and despite lots of lightning I didn't actually see any bolts, it may have been intra-cloud.
Didn't have time to get the camera. I live in the highest village in Somerset and most years someone in the village loses all their electronics. One year, the neighbours ADSL filter melted off the wall! Hence I was running around unplugging everything!
I'm supposed to be photographing a zip wire off the church tower in a couple of hours

Top drawer, heard loads of rumbles last night and the odd flash wish id gone out

Well what a waste of 2 hours that was, after multiple attempts at installing deepsky all I got was this! The 2nd streak is missing too! :(

10 shots and 5 blanks:

I maybe wrong, but I think that may be a satellite rather than a meteor - it looks more of solid consistent line, whereas I think meteors should be brighter at one end and fade out in the tail?

Really? I dont know at thought I thought it might be a plane but there was no plane up there when I checked. hopefully it is one :) and looking at Darthchaffinch photo his looks the same but a shorter version.
I saw three last nigth one of which was very long and another was just a flash no streak it was light a torch being turned on and off.

Not entirely true though .. go to my Flickr, find the set called 'stormy weather' and check the EXIF

Well lol i stand corrected lol ive never seen any with fast speeds well done. I did not think it would be possible since as soon as you have seen the fork and pressed the shutter it would of been missed. how did you do it? was it on continuous? firing off like a machine gun until you captured one lol

Cheers chaps! I was very pleased with them as well.

Matt, settings were ISO 100, f/4.5 and 20 second exposure and a healthy portion of luck. I took over 60 shots and only managed to catch lightning in four of them! I initially was using f/2.8 but that was blowing the detail in the lightning but once I stopped down a bit the results were much better!

I was sat inside with the patio doors open and the camera pointing out pressing the shutter release every 20 odd seconds. :bonk:

Here are my other shots.
