medical trials

I mean a paid trail.

Think very carefully about paid trials. Some of them are completely new drugs never used on humans before and they're not risk free. You're generally paid because they represent a considerable hassle as well

Yes. I signed up for one and they have just emailed me saying there is a trail i am compatible for.

So where does it take you? Do medical trails run through woodlands and across beaches, and do the stop points have paracetemol and gaviscon to take as proof you made it?

Would you not recommend i do this?

I'd go into it with your eyes open, bear in mind paid trials are generally very early in a drugs development. As above that may end up meaning you are the first person worldwide to take it.

Generally it'll probably be very experimental. Lots of tests and blood samples. i know they pay well, but generally they can be a lot of a pain as well. i assuming a multi day stay in a unit, plus timed assessments, bear in mind these are likely to be 1 hours intervals at most the day or so after you're given a drug.

Before you decide, I'd make sure you understand everything you're being asked to participate in. The doctor responsible for the trial should take as long as you need explaining this to you

Ok i think i will really need to have a good think about this.

Of course, you know that some get the drug and some get the placebo ?
(usually smarties or something)

Smarties now there is an interesting word to use :D

Most trials aren't placebo controlled. I ate all the smarties so there non left;)

seriously though, most trials of these type its not ethical to give placebo cause of the number of tests performed over the period, and they tend to be run with just one drug (the trial drug)

later ones you tend to compare to another medicine, but they're not paid

As long as it wasn't the Jaffa cakes I'm sure I can forgive you :D

Oh OK Its a lot of years since I was involved in "anything like this"
I guess the "rules and procedures" have changed somewhat then?

I think theres still some at the back of the cupboard. There were never any drugs that looked like them :D

Some of the ethics involved can make it kind of interesting now, and I know the first trial I ever ran was about 100x simpler then the last, but I'm very glad to be out of that now

There was an infamous case some years ago where things went horribly wrong and IIRC at least one death.

Oh I dunno, I think I had a suppository once ..............................:D

I'm going back to the mid 70's, Some "stuff" that was tested
under "BP" failed it was then passed on the "US Pharmacopoeia."
Which was obviously more "relaxed".
Did I hear you say un-ethical?
Surely not :D

If I remember correctly

The last company I worked for has just picked up a $1.9 bn fine. No unethical activities there then ;)

I also left the company I referenced in response to Tony about a week before that incident happened

Admittedly they don't often screw up, but when they do, it really can go tits up.
Its very difficult to account for all circumstances, allergies (which seem to be more diverse and common these days)
and the such like.

I know I have been pulling your leg Tony, but as said, make sure you do your home-work ;)
I know that its a £1000, but I like you just the way you are I'd hate you to grow boobs or something :D

There was no death if you're thinking about the same incident as me, I linked above.

As you probably are aware "pulmonary" = lungs ... you've only got one pair and you need them!

Ah yes northwick Park ;)
I didn't work that far away, at something beginning with "G" ;)

I think its now GSK.

I know you would love me with boobs... Well i would!

Glaxo in Greenford?

GSK were the last company I worked for

They used to have a facility at Harefield. I think that its shut
or was taken over by Hoechst ( schering plough as it is now)

Yeah just another bloody excuse to sit around and play with yourself all day :p

yep, Greenford and Harlow have both gone as well now

Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Gambling with your health for £1000, no chance.
