markelliot's 52. W44 Pair. Re Edited! W45 Safety Added... W38 Fun Added!

HI Mark...well done for your catch up mister

The Red Arrows shot is stunning , has a very classic feel to it , unusual processing BUT for me at least , it's simply superb

Sensual....great idea & well shot , love the way the massage oil glistens on her hands & the espression on your face... The slightly bright white area to the right in fromt of your head does'nt bother , possibly not cropping the cuff would have been better but still a great shot

ps...did I mention that I love your Red Arrows shot ??

Your sensual was one of ideas i had, but I couldn't think of where to take it in the house.
Yours works well and it certainly says sensual.

Party poppers, I was planning a trip to Wilkos at lunch to get some party poppers for my celebration, but now I've seen yours and see that Andy is doingthe same, I'll have to have a rethink.

Love teh red arrows too, but I think these are something that have to be in colour.

Anyway, I have a few other ideas but it's unlikely I'll get them done so I'll be using the 40 party poppers I bought :D

i seriously thought you were doing a 1 off 40 popper shot...then thought maybe not...

@mark... that sensual feels good just from the photo... but the elbow does seem to be sticking out in ya face.. :D

Thanks all for the positive comments.

I dont find the elbow too much of an issue in the shot but I can see what you mean as it does slightly distract from the massage itself... I could recrop and include the full sleve but there was some other bits and pieces off the shot I found more distracting... hence the crop there!

Red arrows for elaborate... I do also have plenty colour shots too... but I felt this shot was prob the more elaborate... also im not actually normally a fan of sepia but somehow I felt it worked for these shots.

As for my celebrate thought... none have you have offered any opinions yet on which one of the two photo's you would go for???... Sorry again to Niel and Andy if I got their first with the poppers... But still go with your ideas I certainly wont be bothered!

Mark

I wont comment on this just yet, don't want to give Andy any tips, just in case I do go with the party poppers :naughty:

Hiya Mark,

Well done on the last three themes.

Sensual look relaxed and the arm doesn't bother me as much as the overexposed white on the right of the photo.

Elaborate has to be my favourite, I love the processing which gives it an almost period feel and the synchronised flying is indeed elaborate.

Celebrate ... a great idea  Difficult to choose between the two, but the more I look at them I prefer the second shot to the first mainly because I like that the streamers are more defined.

Well done on the three.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Well caught up Mark,

Sensual, I like this shot, but there is so much that niggles me, I'm finding it hard to love it. The head is too central to the shot, the square crop doesn't help, the elbow is centre of shot, and the forearm leads your eye out of shot. Also the shot seems blown by your hands.
Good crop everywhere else, no crops on joints, and it’s good to see the face well exposed, and a natural looking expression. The catch lights in the oil are good too.

Elaborate. Excellent. Well captured, great use of dead space. Stunning

Celebrate. Not sure about these. The first one has the OOF streamer running across the shot, distracting somewhat. I also think the dark background does not help convey "celebration". It just darkens the shot, and for me, the mood a little bit. Sorry.

Don’t worry about it... It's only stealing someone else's idea if you actually see it... then steal it! Thanks for the comments... But I wont be fighting you... I’m not the type!
To steal from one person is plagiarism, to steal from many is research

Hi Adie

Thanks for your comments!

I could recrop the sensual pic. I did my best with the lighting within my capabilities... a small EX220 canon flash which you cant use to bounce and my recently bought halogen worklight. I placed the worklight out of shot at the top of the bed and had the flash on my camera to get the catchlights on the hands. I actually didn't really see the sheets above my head as massivly blown but the more I look the more I can see they are... but im not sure it actually bothers me! I possibly need to make a difuser for my work light now... any tips???
Also im not sure my t shirt tan adds to the pic... as the back is so light and the arm darker! All in all though I might recrop the shot but happy with it as a keeper for my 52... I guess its shows part of my first lighting atempts so hopefully I can improve on it in the comming weeks!

As for celebrate... I think your maybe right about the black background... but I wanted it so the streamers would stand out... maybe if I just brighten the photo itself that might help. I am strangely drawn still to the first of the two though!

Mark

Hi all...

Officially behind again! Really sorry i've not been about here the past few weeks... with work, scout camp and homelife and a holiday next week I just have not had the time. Hopefully some of my pics I take when i'm away will help me catch up.

Sorry i've not been commenting on your stuff either... I try to do it at lunchtime at work... but its been so busy with so many people off on their holidays.

Mark

Hiya Mark,

No worried ... all in good time. You have a great holiday and we will see your catch-up when you get back.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Some good shots there. The Red Arrows stands out as a really exceptional image. The B+W works well. The composition, lighting, focus all spot on.

The party popper shot are good, but for me there's not enough going on.

I like the "sensual " pic. Certainly spot on for the theme. Overall good composition, position, lighting. The elbow is a bit intrusive.

Good catch up

Hi All!

I'm back... what a hectic few weeks where I have just not had time for my 52! I was off on holiday down in England in Yorkshire and then the Lakes and took some good shots when the weather allowed... So I was a bit disappointed to find none of them where much use for last weeks theme. I have some that may do for some of the previous weeks I've missed. I'm going to try and catch up this week hopefully!

Anyway to start the catch up off I decided to use an iphone application I had been fooling about with a while ago... So no technical photography crit on this one really required.. as it's more a bit of fun... but sometimes that is all photography should be!

The app basically used a pic of you to Delolve you!

So here it is... Week 32... Evolution
6043360582_e0a2fdd3c1_o.jpg

This weeks theme was much easier for me... I'm simply using the Pic I started my whole 52 off with... before I decided to do the themed 52... It's been needing used and a theme that fits it and it's bang on this theme!

Week 33... Record

HI ya Mark...hope you had a great holiday:thumbs:

Loving that iPhone app...togging should be fun , you're right:)

Great shot for record & just what I had in mind but failed to come up with one as good as yours . Like the DOF...all the important bits are in focus....reflections can't be helped as natural....good shot mister

Need to ask....what shutter speed you used...if you don't mind ?

Great photo Mark.
Love the DoF and the motion blurr. If I was to nit pic, maybe the top right corner needs something... Or a slightly tighter crop. But I like this a lot

Evolution shot is a good fun shot.

I like your record shot, but it now means I have to go back to the drawing board as it's very similar to the idea I had, motion blur too. Still, it saves me take a shot of my father-in-laws record player, I don't have one! The motion blur is good, I may have been tempted to try a slightly longer shutter speed, but this may put th e needlt OOF?.

Ok .... Here goes my massive update that really brings me up to date!

Week 17, Tropical.
I've really just been lost with this theme, I could not think of any original ideas.

6090412327_426dba84ff_o.jpg

Week 25, Rescue.
My original for this was not great in terms of theme. I came across this RAF helicopter by chance doing an exercise in the North York Moors... Far better for the theme.

6090412081_ef929bf37d_o.jpg

Week 29, Smell.
I got my lesson in working with animals with this shot... It's hard and they never quite do what you want! Best shot I got of my mum's Westie sniffing!

6090956976_2597868779_o.jpg

Week 30, Weird
I grabbed this shot quickly in NYC in April... Def one of the Weird and Wonderful characters of the city!

6090957336_50ff134ff1_o.jpg

Week 31, Wind
It's the power of the wind that whips up the waves! This was prob the best shot I got off Filey promenade in Yorkshire back in early August. I'd been there the day before also but did not have my camera... but had seen the concept for this shot... unfortunately when I went back the light was not so good!

6090412849_9a2781b025_o.jpg

Week 34, Work
One of my fav shots depicting life in NYC! The shoe shine boys def work hard! I wanted to get closer in but there was a barrier and I knew I had to get this shot 1st time otherwise i'd loose the reality of the shot with people noticing I was there... or even telling me to sod off! The pillar is annoying I know!

mark i especially like the Work shot...those chairs look very conformtable... VERY...cosy..but really converys the work ethic with the blurred hand movement.

rescue was stunning for the detail captured of the helio  plus the word Rescue slipped in there .. :D

Smell..now that is the function of the dogs nose, not to be mistaken for the smell eminating from the chair he's laying on??>. sometimes i see things that aren't there.? i love the DOF with the sharp head and blurred fall off..

Hi, there, just returned from a very long, hard walk so I'll limit my C&C to one for now: weird, liked it as soon as I saw it. Very strange guy, I take it he wasn't dressed like that for some kind of festival. At the end of the day, we need these kind of people to entertain us.

Cheers and I'll look to check back soon.

No He defo was not dressed like that for a festival... he sorta slumped about central park... we seen him a few times over the two weeks we where there. He kept sticking his huge tounge out at people too! He was a bit of a weirdo!

Thanks for your comments! Must admit was very satisfied with the rescue shot and it was defo a right place at the right time piece of luck!

Week 35! Blur

Two shots to decide on... although I have another idea which i've not had time to shoot though!

What do you think between these two? The first is a bit of a cliche I guess and done many times before... although I do like my version. Whilst the second was a shot I came up with in NYC... Im not sure it came out exactly as I planned, however it was meant to be abstract... but I really like it... and its defo a blur... but at the same time to me anyway its obvious what it is! Or is that just me?

Hey, nowt wrong with cliches...:D

I really like #1. Just something about freezing and capturing motion in the same photograph appeals to me.

I like abstract, but #2, hmmm, is it a taxi?

Cheers and keep up the cliches...

I like number 1 a lot. It's the idea I wanted to go for, but was unable to.

I think the composition is great, there's nice symmetry and you've not cut anything off wrongly.

Good shot IMO.

Number 2 does nothing for me.

Hi guys! Thanks for the comments....

Im amazed... it must just be me who likes No2 for blur... But that's ok. Im not sure what one of the two I should pick as my final image for blur... I know that you all like 1... but im still drawn to No 2. Which honestly was not an accident... I took about ten pics like this during the two weeks and this was sorta closest to what I wanted!

I'll leave it and decide whenever!

Mark

Hi Mark

Great picture for Rescue.... nice n sharp, great colrs & love the heat haze over the road,,,spot on for the theme:clap:

Smell....it may have been deifficult but you caught the right moment...the image said smell to me as soon as I saw it...& I loe Westies

Of your 2 blur images the 2nd ,whilst not clear initially of the subject is bang on for the theme  The 1st image is just great..need to learn how to take this type of image....any advice on settings much appreciated :)

Wierd...fits the theme wonderfully , like the oof background...looks to me like he thought you were weird as well

Hiya Mark,

Seems like I have missed a few of your weeks, so doing a quick catch up.

Record fits the theme spot on!

Evolution .... something I wouldn't have expected from you, but well done it works well for the theme.

Work is one I have seen previous (I think), however is great for the week.

Wind .... really like this shot ... well done!

Weird ... indeed that does look weird!

Smell .... nice idea for the them, but the whites look a tad blown to me.

Rescue .... can't argue with that one

Tropical ... lovely flower!

Blur .... 1st shot is great, but sorry not sure about the 2nd one for me.

Well done on the catch up!

Cheers

Dawn :)

mark... i love the first blur... why? simply because my eye is drawn to two bold colours.. red..and green... the rest is a blur..a sea of movement...

Hi all!

Thanks for all the feedback!

On the question of my set up for the blur shot which you all like from Grand Central in NYC, I used a small tripod set on the handrail of the stations staircase, ISO 100, f8 on Av gave a 1.3 sec exposure time. No filter was needed as the place is very dark and it was a dull day also!

Sorry I've not had a chance to comment on other peoples photos. With my father in Law in hospital its been a hectic week.

Week 36- Time. You will need to bear with me on that... I have an idea... its a good one but it needs more time and work to get the ned result I want. I could simply take two shots and combine them... but for that i'd have to learn to do that in photoshop. But I think before I resort to this... which would mean me buying aperture or photoshop for my Imac I'm gonna try and do it straight out the camera. I have a theory that should work but in practice its not happened... Yet. I really need a 3 stop ND but all I have is a set of grads, polariser and a 10 stop ND. But the polariser might actually be the answer..... mmm ... more to follow. Watch this space!

I've got a much better shot for celebrate too at the Edinburgh Festival Fireworks... here it is... this replaces my party popper shot!

Week 37- Mix

I was mixing some cement to lay slabs in the garden earlier today when suddenly had this idea. As i've not yet looked at anyone else's shots I hope its not a repeat of someone else's idea.

So here it is... a simple self portrait... MIX!
