markelliot's 52. W44 Pair. Re Edited! W45 Safety Added... W38 Fun Added!

I really like that taxi shot. That screams US city life, and the angle works really well for me as I feel it adds an almost frantic feel to the image. It also works for the bright theme.

I don't like the flag one, although there's nothing really wrong with it. I just don't like the whole patriotism thing, so it's instantly off putting for me.

The wedding shot is a great scene, but the blurring of most things in it spoils it for me. While I'm sure opinions will differ on this as some will like the haste of the location idea, I think a totally frozen capture would give it a more behind the scenes feel.

The traffic cop isn't a bad shot, although the composition seems off, but I'm not sure why. I think it's the fact that he's in the centre of the shot. Personally I'd feel more comfortable if he was on the left or right of the shot.

City scape is a really nice and moody shot, although I don't think it fits the theme at all.

Shoe shining shot is nice, and has a nice feel to it. It works for the theme (although I could see some arguing that point!) but the post on the left is extremely irritating as it is totally in the way :(

Taxi wins for me, theme wise but my favourite is definitely the cityscape and it's the sort of image I'd pay to have framed on a wall :)

Hi all

Just conducted a complete review of my 52 ... I am now woefully behind in overall completion... see my first post again on this thread which has been re-edited completely with a list.

MY REVIEW

Im not to bothered though as im looking at it as a year long project rather than a week on week... And Im not looking to truly "Lock Down" my images to the themes until after the final week. For instance my Power post has just become my Bright post... and Power will be a still outstanding! It might not be how you look at the 52... but it's how I am... what i'd do for list of the remaining weeks now!

Week 24 - Bright

Bright Lights Big City - Time Square NYC!

Yes this was my Power Image... But I could not get away from the fact it is in fact the pest BRIGHT image I have shot this year... so it's back to the drawing board with Power!

My Week 22 Reshoot... A lot happier with this one!

I give you... HIDDEN!

Thanks for your interest in my 52! Getting this done at least this weekend makes me feel a bit better after my review of my 52's progress which can only be described as "could do better!"

Hiya Mark,

I actually like your 'bright' in a skew way ... and it defo fits the theme. Glad to see you are making good use of your pics from your trip

Also love your re-shoot of the 'hidden' shot and it actually makes me cowl further under the bed just looking at it. Great sense of feeling and lighting ... definitely aced this one

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Dawn

Glad my reshoot has that effect on you... sorta the effect I was trying to create... I felt the slippers and jeans was more a homely look than the workboots that had been suggested... It made the pic over sinister where I was really trying to create the kid hiding from dad feeling... rather than something more sinister!

I must thank Webby for his help with a lighting suggestion... It really worked and im hoping to use my BnQ halogen work light a lot more now. Certainly untill I can afford a decent flash!

I'm really struggling with an idea for RESCUE bar the obvious... which some others have already done... I think it's one im going to leave and wait until something naturally crops up to suit the theme for this one!

I haver a new idea for Power but need to research how I can do it... its a complete new shot idea for me... so may take a few weeks to sort...

I have had a good and bad weekend photography wise... I dont a shoot for my wifes P7 leavers class ball which took up all my photography time at the weekend by the time i'd done the processing... And on the night I deleted a card and ended up deleting 5 pics i'd taken at the Edinburgh Marathon which where stunning shots I was saving for a future theme but had not PP'd them yet... Lesson learnt never leave pics on cards, back up, always! I felt a right idiot...

So at least the reshoot last night of hidden got me back on track a little.

Mark

Your Hidden reshoot is great. I was thinking it needed a bit more, I don't know, a little added menace, but on reflection I feel the subtle nature of the photograph conveys way more than any additional peripherals!

Your bright, well, that's bright. I agree that the skewed angle works we, graphically.

I'd like to have seen a portrait orientations showing some of the street/people, if you have any?

Cheers.

OK, wow, loads for me to catch up with :D

23a - Great idea, but sky blown and specular highlight to big and distracting. Nice jaunty angle though.

23b - Fantastic. Nice composition, bold punchy colours (or should that be colors). I think it just needs a tweek in PS to bring in the converging verticals.

23c - Er nope, not for me. To much to comment on.

23d - Potentially a very good shot let down by poor positioning. The main focus is looking out of shot, and is far to central. He needed to be on the right, then he would have been looking into the shot. The J walker is distracting. I think a closer zoom on the man as a 3/4 profile would have been better. But everything else I like. Pin sharp, well exposed.

23e - Nice. I like this. Maybe a tighter crop, loose some of the left and top, just to lift the horizon from the centre line where is bisects the shot.

23f - OK shot. Post is distracting, and foreground has no interest. A tighter crop may help sort this.

Hidden Reshoot - Much better I think. The B&W treatment works well, and the use of shadows as lead in lines works very well
I'm glad you have tried something creative with a simple B&Q lamp. I hope you agree, small modification to the available light can create such an atmosphere in a photo. Well done.

Just look on my flickr for all my NYC shots... plenty others from time sq on the st!

Thanks for your continued interest in my 52.

Hi Mark

a touch late popping in so can't really add to whats already been said....

Reshoot of Hidden....works really well & more effective , to me at least , than the originals so good work

I really like most of your bright captures...particularly the City Lights...would look great framed

The flag shot is also spot on , beautiful sky color , a ripple of wind catching the flag & the building nice n sharp

I love the angle of the Yellow taxi just wish the bright spot over the bonnet & windshield wasn't quite so strong?

Love the way you have gone back & assessed / critqued your own 52 as well ....I've barley got time at the mo to keep up to date with them themes but think I may try the same thing with mine...thanks for the idea

Bright lights big city theme and bright sunny day shot ticks the boxes, but having said that they all work well , superbly done

Hi all

Sorry i've been so poor at feedback on all your shots over the last couple of weeks... I'll try and fit this in this week!

I've had a fab weekend of photography! With Armed forces weekend in Edinburgh and one of my friends wanting me to take the schedule photos for selling her flat i've been busy! I managed to catch some displays and a walk round the HMS Portland on Friday afternoon... Then watched the red arrows on Friday night. If your interested i've posted my pics for the Red Arrows on another thread in the general interest forum. My first go at anything to do with planes and using al servo focus... I'm happy with the results... although I made a school boy error taking my 5D full frame when the wife had a 450d sitting at home doing sod all. The crop sensor with my 70-300mm IS L would have been a more useful combo on the night... ah well every day is a school day! I just never gave it a thought before hand!

RED ARROWS PICS

So gladly I managed to get two pics to fit last weeks theme of Rescue... not sure what one to pic... I like them both. However I do realise the first was basically a snap where as the second involved a little more work with settings and focus during a hostage rescue display. I deliberately went for the desaturated look as I thought it just suited the image better giving it a more real feel!

Help me decide!

Hi, quite difficult to decide, really.

In #1, you had plenty of time, I suspect, to compose the photograph. Even if that was just you moving around. The sus didn't do you any favours, especially on his head/shoulders. I'm not keen on the crossed arms, but nice eye contact and is he aware the helicopter is about to fly in his ear...;)

#2, I suspect asking them for a retake was out of he question...:D Great detail in the water and nice stern looking Marines. I'd like to see a tad more of the water/waves and it looks a bit flat, on my laptop.

Cheers.

Hi Andy...

Shot one was actually really annoying... there was a good pic there but there was sooo many people milling about... There was two guys and one of them just wasn't up for it... so he made this guy a bit arsy too... I had one go... felt a bit rushed and it could have been better... but it was what it was!

I can give you a bit more in shot too... may re edit tomorrow... Got other shots to... but this seemed the most real looking shot... my wider crops show too much harbour etc so it does not look genuine!

I deliberately desaturated it to give it a flat look... sorta docu 1978 falklands feel... maybe not though!?!?!

Hi all... thanks for the comments. I'm going to use the second one as my rescue pic for just now... however if one of the themes comes up as attack I may change it over to that...

As the weeks go on I'm getting less and less committed to lock down my pictures until I know all the themes... many of you wont like that self made rule im sure... but I just think if I do that by the end of the year i'll have the 52 which best represents my whole years photography rather than weekly snapshots of effort.

I'm glad you all seem to like the processing to no 2.

Now for this weeks theme... I have an idea it just needs shot!

Here is the slightly wider crop... I was panicking a bit taking the shot as the boat was moving so fast... really wanted to get the whole boat in when it was this close but it was past before I could recompose!

Do you think this is better than my original crop?

Hiya Mark,

Sorry it has taken me a while to get to your post. I have seen the pics in passing, but landed up doing something else before I could leave comment.

I like your first shot and the chap looks quite pleased with himself being photographed. Just a pity you couldn't get the badge at a better angle and focus because it looks like it has the word Rescue on it.

Of the two versions of the second shot I prefer the latest one you have posted ... it has more of an action feel to it and shouts Rescue more than the first.

BTW I like the processing on both ... suits them both.

Well done though on both counts.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Yip... I prefer the first crop myself... I think that's why I cropped it that way in the first place...

Mark

Ok... Bit of a catch up time with a few themes that have been sitting a while. Today I received in the post many of my old slide film shots scanned. Getting this done has been a huge thing for me in terms of just having decent scans of my old trannies. Whilst still not as crisp as the original slides or new digital photos I am still proud of this phase of my photography... really when I cut into the hobby and went from snapper to photographer...

So although not taken this year... remembered and revitalised this year... that means a lot to me... so for that reason I have decided to incorporate them into my 52... as they do represent a part of my world of photography this year! Also give me a quick way of catching up... and with me who knows what my final 52 images might be... I guess i'll know whats just right in December.

So without further ramblings from me

Week 10- Trio

Week 14- Object

Week 18- Power
5885060243_e4449946aa_b.jpg

Trio - On theme  I've seen this before. Shame about the light but I like their expressions.
Object - On theme  I like the crispness of this and the sky id lovely.
Power - On theme  Not sure about the composition, but cannot see how it could be improved so will... :shake:

Thanks Tina...

I played about with ages on the composition of the Power shot... my wife could not believe how many takes I took of the same picture. I tried to take the same pic on my digi camera on my last visit to NYC as this image is a scanned slide... but failed as the flag would not behave itself and flutter nicely as it did here. I'll need to look at reducing the noise in the back digitally I think I can improve it a bit!

Hiya Mark,

Sorry it has taken me a while to comment on your latest pics ... been a bit crazy lately.

Trio - I thought I had seen this one before ... and I have to say I much prefer this colour version.

Object - right on theme there

Power - Yep I like this one and definitely says 'power' ... as you say there is a bit of noise in the background but not too noticeable. I like the dof and how you have incorporated the flying flag and building which really pop the street sign.

Well done

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi all...

Thanks for your comments... defo woefully behind again... will try and do a bit of a catch up over the next few weeks... I have the ideas just not had the time to shoot them.

Hoping this weeks theme lends itself to some of the other good shots i've taken this year just not featured yet!

Mark

Hi Mark,

Don't worry about falling behind.
At least you're doing better than me. My whole project this year collapsed after about 6 weeks. Just been a hellish year with work commitments and personal stuff :shake:

Some really good stuff in here so far too.
The Wall Street power image and your rescue shot stand out for me. I think you did a fantastic job on the latter, I would never have known that the boat was moving if it wasn't for the spray. Focus us absolutely spot on - and I think your second crop absolutely nails it.

Hi all

Just been busy for the last 2 hours with these 3... Finally catching up with you guys!

W26- Sensual!

5923022267_aba5c4dbc0_o.jpg

W27- Elaborate
Nothing much more elaborate than the moves of the red arrows!

5923585438_447048eb3a_o.jpg

W28- Celebrate
I always like to celebrate with a party popper... so decided to try to catch one at burst point... much harder than I thought... had many shots of pre and post burst as timing was key! So 15 poppers down and I got these two which are defo the best...

Cant decide between them... what do you think?

5923021275_51da312db6_o.jpg

5923586264_e854297519_o.jpg

Hi, Mark, first of all, I don't have much time for my celebrate so I went out today and bought 40 party poppers and a white board for a background.....:bat:

Anyway, I have a few other ideas but it's unlikely I'll get them done so I'll be using the 40 party poppers I bought :D

Sensual is a, well, you lucky s*d.... First thing I saw was your elbow. In another thread a similar composition was used and comments were made about the fact that the elbow seems to be almost coming out of the photograph. It almost takes over the photograph.

Possible issue with the whites?? at least they seem blown on my laptop. I like your pose and the expression on your face. I suspect her hands are in the upper left third but I'm not keen on how the cuff has been cut/cropped off.

Elaborate is a very nice photograph. It just works for me. The eye will follow the trails, either from or to the plane. Is in sepia? I can't comment on the ccontrast (crappy laptop....:() but maybe you could get some more contrast?

Celebrate....you and me outside....NNOOWWWW!!!

Cheers and nice one for catching up and overtaking most of us...

Andy... Dont worry about it... It's only stealing someone else's idea if you actually see it... then steal it! Thanks for the comments... But I wont be fighting you... Im not the type!
