markelliot's 52. W44 Pair. Re Edited! W45 Safety Added... W38 Fun Added!

Two good ones there.

Celebrate - I've not done one myself so far but you've got plenty of details and you've really frozen the action.

Perhaps a tad ore colour and the light on the lower left wall distracts slightly.

Mix - nice and simple. B&W works well and the sense of anonymity by using the brim of the baseball had is a great touch. Nice movement in the sand.

Time - wow, you've really built this one up...Looking forward to it...

Cheers.

I would not hold your breath guys... I've had another go this morning and I thing without a good flash and a lot more skill on syncing it etc... and not having a 3 stop ND I think im doomed to failure on my time shots. My results so far are really off the mark. I am going to postpone till next weekend now when I have a bit more time. It also needs a little technique research... but its all part of the learning process!

Thanks for your continued interest in my 52!

Mark

Hi Mark

beautiful shot of the firworks...can see that one in a frame ,simply wonderful :clap:

Week 40 - Explode!

I've just realised this weeks theme is Explode by reading someone elses thread! I'm a bit confussed as to where the new themes are actually anounced. I tend to wait till I see someone else has posted or the spreadsheet is updated to find out. I know there is another thread but I can never find clear anouncements on it! Sorta have to read between the lines!

Anyways... Explode finally a theme where I have shot something recently I can use!

I took these shots of the Sighthill flats in Edinburgh being demolished by explosion! It was a controlled demolition of three flats but I decided to concentrate on one flat for a number of reasons that day. The position of the sun being one and the place I found a bit back from the crowd where I had room to set up and work. I put my camera on rappid fire and took loads of test shots before the explosion to tinker with the exposure which I wanted to get spot on in what was a reasonably contrasting scene. I wandered too how the exposure might change through the demolition sequesnce but my 5d seemed to cope with this! My wife did get a great shot of all three comming down but I like mine also of the complete series of one flats tumble to the ground.

So here it is... my take on Explode!

Ah ... thanks for the linky... what a fool i've been, thats the thread ive been looking at... but not the first post... the last posts so it was never obvious!

Implosion... there's always a smart a***! Glad you liked it!

Mark

Great capture, a real piece of historic reportage photography. Now you've posted your shot so quick I need to get a wiggle on LOL

I like the blur, celebrate and explosion shots... for work can you just crop to the pillar? Might be ok - worth a try? Or are you trying to keep the shots as is?

I really try to keep all my photography as real as I can! I am going to venture into a little more PP this winter... but nothing major. I want to try photo joiners, HDR and selective colour... but I never really try to clone anything out... although im not against doing it to the odd unwanted thing. Probably the biggest thing that the software I use just now (canons DPP) does not let me do that I used to do in the darkroom is burning in. So looking for a program that lets me do that for my landscape work more than anything. Im thinking of apature by apple... as I have an apple PC. I dont think I need anything more and photoshop[ elements which is the other program ive considered seems too complicated and actually does not give you as much freedom ive read... too many preset options. Its all about cost too... cant afford much just now.

Like it. Just looking on my phone atm. How lucky. I'm still thinking of the best way to go about mine for this week.

Thanks guys! I wouldn't worry about your shots... I'm a total of 4 weeks behind and I've got a few others I want to reshoot!

Like it...a lot!!

Really captured the power of the explosives (:D) causing the flats to implode.

Having 5 images works as well (btw, a tryptic is 3....what is 5??)

The composition work well; the slight angle really gives depth.

Cheers.

Hiya Mark,

Mix: Fits the theme well and I agree the b&w suits the image.

I like the fireworks shot, which fits celebrate.

Explode: Great shots and well documented for the demolition.

Cheers

Dawn :)

OK... Over the next few days I'm hopefully going to catch up...

Firstly time... and this has been a long time coming! However it is not my original idea which after about 4 days worth of trying just did not work. I really was trying something I did not have the right equipment for... and it has to be said I have learnt one thing... If you've not got the kit... It wont work. I was trying to firstly do a macro shot... (using a cheap close up lens) With a very long shutter speed, I needed a 0.9ND and I was using a 10 stop... but its all I had... then I wanted to flash during every second of the exposure to get the sec hand through the shot... about a 15sec exposure with hands set at 10 to 2... I know what I wanted... but just couldn't get it to work.... I will one day!

Anyway I was back to the drawing board... so I came up with this for time. I think it's a bit obvious... and its another... set up in the house shots... which im thinking my 52 has enough of now... but hey ho... here it is!

Time!

Mark, I have just looked through this whole thread and as a newbie, the only one that does nothing for me is evolution, great idea though, as for the rest, your photography is truly inspirational to me.
I have decided today to join this project and only hope my shots are worthy to be on the same forum let alone page. I have seen 2 of my explode ideas done (better than I could) though, the Tango bottle and party popper :(
Keep up the great work,
Best wishes
Cliff

Well that's the biggest compliment my photography has had in a while... I can go off out tonight for a drink feeling all good about myself!

Good luck in your photography... but always believe you can do just as good as anyone though... It takes a bit of knowledge... but more importantly its about getting yourself in the right place at the right time!

Ok... My catch up never really came to much as stuff came up today and never got a chance to shoot! Although my wife and I did buy a new canon 430EX speedlight which I cant wait to start playing with. I have a week off work the week after next so will get volume done then!

This weeks theme was ideal for some shots I took earlier in the year. It was my first go at car photography and it was on a track over the back of York Air Museum. So as I was in the air museum rather than at the track I didn't have the best angle... It's funny you go to an air museum and spend more time taking pics of cars! First time at panning too!

Anyway... prob the best shot of the day! As I say the angle I had was not the best... But I think this one captivates the theme rapid quite well... as these cars where very rapid!

Hi, Mark.

Time..fits the theme and well constructed/composed.

The 2 small spots on your sleev are a tad distracting and I'l like to see the text in focus.

Rapid...Austin Martin..... :gag::nuts: it's a winner straight away for me. I've thought about the bollard and you must have a reason for leaving it in...

Cheers.

^ Andy

To be honest I think the car would look better with the cone removed. I never removed as basically up to know I've only ever used Canons DPP and it does not have the function to remove stuff. However i've just downloaded Apples Aperture... So removing the cone will be my first try at removing anything out a photo.

It's not something i've ever really done before... the traditionalist who likes to get it right in the camera wouldn't let me... but in this case I think I can even justify it to myself as basically I really did not chose for it to be there and if setting up the shot I would never have put it there!

I'll have a go tomorrow... And I'll get rid of the paint spots on my top... well noticed I'd not spotted them until you said... but your right they are distracting!

Mark

Ooooh I can see Mark getting addicted to post processing soon .... is there any other free PP software we can suggest to get his juices flowing?

Hey! Mark .... don't feel bad about having to remove something from your pic .... at the end of the day that is the advancement in technology that I am sure many old hat photographers would have welcomed in their days.

I can appreciate you wanting to get it right in cam at time of shot .... believe it or not .... that is my way of thinking too :) Even though you don't see it that way .... I just take my photography in a different direction to you ;)

Regards your last 'Time' shot .... I still prefer the first .... your latest attempt looks too staged.

As for 'rapid' I like the panning you have done ... and to be honest I actually like the cone in the shot as it gives more sense to the rapid motion as a point of reference to same. If you removed it the road and the grass would just look like a blend of background and actually not pay justice to the actual theme .... if you know what I mean.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Dawn

A bit of PP for certain things has always been ok... I guess.... All I really want to do is what I used to do in the darkroom with B and W. Dodging and burning and yeh removing the odd thing and a bit of selective colour which I do like occasionally!

I guess we are different because I would never use PP so much to make effects such as your evolution shot... but that's ok... I have always said your a great pic and image maker... and you've one over me in many ways as Im just a pic taker!

I never took a first time shot!... so im a bit confused as to what pic your on about.... I do agree though the shot does look staged and im not overly happy with my time shot.... I may change it later in the year if I take a more suitable shot.... I might even get a ND filter for chrimbo off mrs E and then I'll be able to give my original idea a go before the year is out!

Your maybe right about the cone now I look again!

Hiya Mark,

Just to clarify .... I wasn't talking about getting it right FIRST time in camera with a first shot, but merely referring to the sense of achievement when one can get it right in camera regards composition, lighting, exposure, etc even if it takes a couple of shots to achieve same ;)

As for filters .... I don't have any either .... there is so much camera equipment and accessories that I would like, but can't afford ... so have to make do with just using my camera ... which at times is not a bad thing as it makes me think more about how to adjust the settings accordingly to get the right shot.

And back to your 'rapid' shot .... the more I look at it .... the more I would leave it as is .... it is a great shot, crisp and clear with a sense of motion in the wheels and the cone should remain too ... adding to the the rapid motion.

Cheers

Dawn ;)

Mark,

I like the shot, but it feels a little still to me, what shutter speed was used?

I don't mind the cone; it's as though the Aston is crossing the finishing line!

I am also one of the DPP only folk, was Apature 'free'?

Hi Joe

Apple give a free 30 day trial of apature ... but I've already decided im going to get it... LOve it especially for burning in... which I used to do with my B and W printing in the darkroom a lot!

I'm at work so cant access the data on the shot... cant remeber what speed I was using... prob around 1/500 though!

Mark

Was gonna suggest Gimp as an alternative :) hey get Aperture tho - meant to be good and if you like it even better!

The Aston and first pan works well for Rapid :)
Not too sure on the train one though. Suggests more like you're (too) late...

Nice focus and lighting tho.

Gimp? Im lost...

Yeh im not overly happy with the time shot... But t best ive taken for the theme so far this year. I may change it if i take something better before i lock down my 52!

Hi Mark

love it love it love it ....RAPID....hits all the right spots for me
You can't go far wrong with an Aston....the car is beautifully sharp....motion blur spot on on the wheels & the background suitably oof.....wonderful

As for the cone....I hate cloning things out but can't make up my mind on this one...it does look like a finishing post which adds to the sense of speed....but then again maye it draws the eye a little....hmmmm....nope , leave as it is :clap:

Hi Mark.

Time hits the theme but I don't find the image appealing.
Composition is good.
Looking at that timetable and your watch though, I don't think you'll make the 11:12 train!

I'd rather there was no cone in rapid, but I don't think it spoils the shot.
The shot hits the theme and you've done a good job of panning.

Nice Seamaster
Nice Aston

Now all you need is a semi naked stunner, get all three in one shot and I wont care what the theme is :naughty:

Keep up the good work.

Adie
