weekly Longimanus 52 of 2016 - Wk 37 added - Still playing catchup though

Cheers @susiejb Ive still got some catching up to do, but I have a few evenings and mornings in the next 7 days to do this, fingers crossed I get back on track!

My gosh - a nice catch-up.
Personal: Excellent b&w - love the location and the lead-in to the church. Clouds are fabulous.
Effort: Another excellent image - nice starburst effect.
Technology: Super macro- great DoF
Horizontal: Nice response to the theme although may have been better if the legs of the bench were fully silhouetted against that sky.
Well done Lee.

Hi Lee,

  • Personal - Yup, that works. I can see you've channelled Ansel Adams by including an S Curve in the shot.
The B&W processing works for the shot.

  • Effort - There are many horns to your shoe in this shot. Not sure what to make of it, does the pier really have those angles.
The other thing is, you've deliberately gone for a star burst effect with the rising sun, great if that's where you really want everyone to look, but as you've stuck your watermark there, I would guess it isn't supposed to be the focal point of the shot. However, being the brightest point, it grabs the eye...

  • Technology - It's on theme, but we've had a few of these shots, so it's a bit run of the mill. Maybe a bit of focus stacking (if you have the software)

  • Horizontal - Simple, effective... My favourite of the 4 shots you've posted. (y)

Hi Lee

Very nice composition of both the church and the pier images. The bench is most intriguing ... looking artificial in a nice arty way. (y)

@Carl Ayling, many thanks for the comments, I agree the bench would have been better if the legs were silhouetted, but its sitting on a wall so it wasn't possible

@LC2, many thanks for the comments,

Personal, Im gonna have to google the Ansel Adams thing :-)

Effort, I can see what you are saying about the sunburst being in that position, I wanted the sun in the shot and I like the effect, but I couldn't get it anywhere else due to its positioning, I know later in the year it will move round so I will go and check it out again.

Fair enough on Technology, I should have used the stacking option on my OMD really, good shout on that!

Horizontal, Ive been looking for more simple and effective shots, I keep viewing @viv1969 images and really like them, so trying to emulate a bit really :-)

Many thanks David, I'm hopefully improving as I go along this year

Some great images in your catch up - I love your personal image - the winding river leading you in is magical, and it's a nice conversion too. There's nothing better than getting up early for a sunrise - the sun is now out of shot for our local pier so I'll just have to wait until later in the year - I love the sunburst in yours :)

Wow, some great catch up photos there Lee

Personal is a great composition and nicely processed.
Effort is a beauty - well worth the effort and again effective use of leading lines. Technically top notch (y)
Technology works well for the theme and is lit well.
Horizontal - nice idea but I reckon for this one it'd work better if you could see the legs of the bench. Maybe shot lying on the floor? Good negative space though.

Some absolute belters there - I'm probably being unfairly picky above because your photos are of such a high standard (it'd not help if I just posted "wow, great pic" against each one ;) )

Paul, I appreciate all of your comments and comments from everybody else, it makes me think next time I am about to press the shutter button.

I agree about the bench, but its a weird setup here, the bench is balanced on a wall!

Many thanks for the high standard comments, I think I am improving this year!

Really like that Lee, great take on the theme.

BTW your Link int the "Post you images here ..." thread for this image isn't working.

Size: that is an exceptional capture Lee. Genuinely wonderful and it seems stupid to criticise any aspect of it because the wow is in the high contrast, the subject matter and the way you've controlled the lighting.

Next time, if it's possible to squeeze that aperture down a bit just to reduce the amount of blowout on the rimlighting, it might work?

Excellent capture Lee - like that a lot. Could be themed for Spikey too. Well done.

Many thanks for the comments from all

@pjm1 do you mean making the aperture F5.6 rather than F2.8, just trying to understand exactly what you are saying :-)

@Dark Knight yes the workshop was good, I want to go on another soon as I have come away with more ideas

Im not sure if the image would have worked with a longer stalk showing and then the crop being taller with the mouse straddling the top third of the image, Im always looking to improve :-)

Sorry, it's always dangerous when talking about apertures or shutter speed and saying "bigger/smaller" as it can mean opposite things to different people :)

Yes, I was thinking just to reduce your EV by (probably) stopping down a touch on the aperture so the highlights aren't quite as wide a band around the edge of the subjects. This would also make the near blacks blacker... but maybe you wanted what you got and if so, it's great as is!

How the hell did he do that! Was my initial reaction. So the BWC provide the mouse on a teasel with back-lighting I guess. o_O

Absolutely fantastic.

great catch up since my last visit, my favorite is size must have taken a good deal of care and patience to set that one up.

Need another catchup here to get this going again, been diving so get ready for a few underwater images :-)

Hi Lee. That's a wonderful shot of the Harlequin Shrimp - not that there's anything wrong with the Cuttlefish, just that I prefer this one. Love the lighting and shapes and colours. Stunning.

Thanks Carl, appreciate it, those cuttlefish are very hard to get a good shot as they are low on the sand, it doesn't give you much to play with :-)

Another excellent shot Lee. A bit of a poser but looks great in that bright yellow livery. Good offset composition; I particularly like the texture and colour of the Goby's home.

That looks more like exit to my :D

But that's an great photo, nothing to fault! Brilliant composition, brilliant contrast between the yellow grumpy fish and the texture of his home.
