weekly Longimanus 52 of 2016 - Wk 37 added - Still playing catchup though

Not bad being handheld:)

I did get told off by the underground police though :-(

Well done - lovely shot and handheld too Wow. Wonder why they object - different if you set up a tripod and were causing an obstruction. Must try my hand at that sometime.

Many thanks, the Oly ibis is pretty impressive

Hi Lee... two good shots there. S&Ms (ha!) perfectly on theme and a really solid, classical composition which works well. Slightly softer lighting might lend a bit more "product shot" look to it if that's what you were after (perhaps not) but it's still a very good image.

Danger is excellent - perfectly on theme and very very well executed. Leading lines and general composition top drawer as well. Really good!

Paul, many thanks for the kind comments, Im really starting to enjoy this 52, roll on the next week!

Hi Lee ....good to see you're enjoying the challenge, that's a really fabulous shot for this week ....absolutely spot on

Thanks Susie, let's hope the enthusiasm continues, I've still got to catchup with Happy :-)

Absolute cracker for the theme Lee.
My favourite so far I think.

Hi Lee

I really like this, it's full of colour and energy. The reflection of the platform in the side of the train is great.

Great Danger shot, and hand held too! Lovely leading lines and that blur of colour concentrates the mind on the Danger of Speed.

Bl00dy Terrorist ;)

Good effort with the leading lines and the reflections. Cool trail.
I like the way you've used the fluorescent lights as the vertical in the shot.

I did think about it afterwards and can understand their reasoning with all the terrorist activity that has been going on in the past 10 year, they did say that I needed permission to take photos, god knows how you get that though.

Your dangerous is fab - so well composed with the 'mind the gap' in the foreground and the lines leading to the tunnel. As others have said especially impressive for hand held (y)

Thanks to all the comments, it was something I had in my mind when I knew the topic and the fact that I was going to be in London, its nice to be able to pull it all off, @viv1969 your comment had made me quite proud especially with all the fantastic shots this week :-)

First rate (y)

I'd planned a similar kind of *mind the gap* type shot but this is something beyond.

Abandoned - really nice powerful image, very striking! Great shot :)

Camouflage - haha, nice take on the theme, took me a while to spot it!

Danger - really nice pic, love it :)

Lee Hi, my favourite shot of the dangerous entries so far. Perfection. Nothing else to say.

Abandoned - dark and moody great for theme
Camouflage - complete contrast to last one bright colourful and fun
Danger - spot on great shot especially as it is handheld

Topical
by Shark Seeker, on Flickr

My take on 'Topical', Apple are always in the news whether it is a product launch, record profits or denying the FBI access to an iPhone.

I wanted to try and create a simple image of an apple with a nice shadow, lighting is probably a bit harsh and I found it hard to get it exactly like I had visioned.

Topical indeed. I love the colour and the shadow but I think there's a bit too much dead space top left, maybe a slightly tighter crop would help.

Brilliant.
A cracking shot that sums up the theme

I don't mind the distortion in the far door because the POV, perspective and angle work really well.

Like it (y)

Thanks Andy, there is always something that I see when I get home, in this case it was the door, I did crop it a bit to make it more pleasing :-)

Abandoned - sterling work, I love it, looks like there's a bit of an eerie feel to it.

Thanks Mandy, its apparently quite haunted this place, its also something I want to go back and do again when I get the time

Camouflage - bright colourful image, nice one.

Danger - a great image for the theme, good trail.

Very kind comments Lee, I am pleased with it myself, even if I did get told off doing it!

Many thanks for all the nice comment from all, it really is appreciated

Thanks Colm, I know what you mean, I will try and take this into account on future shots :-)

Good choice of subject for all the reasons you mention Lee. I think both the composition and lighting are good - a nice soft shadow cast. May want to avoid that crease in the bg paper by using curved A3 size paper (or the back of a roll of wallpaper for that matter). Good though.

Thanks Carl, thats a good shout on the back of wallpaper, I never thought of that!

I then wouldn't have to be walking around the house looking for a nice white surface with a white background behind it :-)

Topical. Good interpretation of the theme. I like the minimal use of colour, perhaps slightly too much spare space

Hi Lee. I'm not sure what you were visualsing to be left disappointed, but it's a cool shot. Beyond 'maybe crop tighter' I can't offer any advice on this one!

Great shots Lee!
Danger - perfect shot, worth getting in trouble with the transport police for. I thought TfL are pretty cool with taking photos on the underground as long as you don't use flash or tripod? Or did you loiter on the platform?
Topical - I like the dark shadow and also the wide crop. And bang on theme (y)

Lee, like your thinking on the Topical theme, certainly better took image than I would have managed.

Hi Lee - good idea and a solid shot. If you don't mind, I'll break down my critique (pos & neg) into bits so that you can disagree with lots of it :)
background - I like the floor/wall look as infinity curves can be overused. Perhaps cut through the apple slightly further down, but that might just be me - it works as is.
background lighting - I like the variation and drop-off TL of wall - it helps accentuate the division between floor and wall and works.
highlights - a toughie here because the shiny apple is hard to light for highlights yet still get a "proper" shadow - had you lit for the highlights (softer light) your shadow would have been compromised and I feel the shadow is more important, so you've chosen well IMO. One thing you could have done is reduce the highlight by splashing the apple with water - loads of little highlights instead and might have helped break up that area a bit?
shadow - as mentioned, the main shadow is great and makes the image but I'm not a fan of the second shadow coming towards us. I can't quite tell (i.e. I'm not knowledgable enough to know) whether the second shadow is just the reflected light from the wall - it looks the wrong direction to me - or is from a second light source? Any which way, I'd be inclined to lose it.
fill light - per DK, I might be tempted to throw a reflector in frame left to bounce a touch more light back onto the shadow side of the apple, which might also have helped deal with the secondary shadow, perhaps. Minor thing though - the lower shadow detail still works for me.

A good image and some great features.

I did a workshop in the Peak District this weekend so its only fair that I use an image from that.

The weather wasn't great, but I learnt a lot about my camera, the location and the compositional aspects of photography, it was a bit of a trek from Sussex, but well worth it :)

I can't wait to go back an have another go.

Topical - I will have to agree with Susies comments.
Nice image Lee, maybe just a tad of light reflected back onto it with a bit of card or reflector would lift it a bit, but still love the heavy shadow and composition of it :)
Great shots Lee!

Nice job ... but I'm sure @Dark Knight knows what he's talking about here.

Again many thanks for the kind comments, I don't know how you all have the time to go and look at everyones submissions and make comments, I must try harder!

Im by no means an expert with lighting so it was fun to do, I was tempted to resubmit with a crop but went against it and will take this into account next time I have a similiar subject.

@pjm1 many thanks for the detailed information, I don't have a reflector of any sorts, may look into this in future and see what I can do next time.
